WTF is going on here!?

4  2012-09-21 by [deleted]

We all know (or should) that everything on Reddit (and the internet) is being streamlined into a fusion center and/or the NSA. Why the fuck are there even moderators on a site that was designed to have the users generate and moderate their own content (unless in cases of obvious and extreme abuse)? What are your thoughts on having the mods volunteer steeping down? What are your thoughts on the clusterfuck that is r/conspiracy? How can we better discuss and share alternative ideas and media without all the BS that is going down? I'm not attacking anyone here, just asking questions.

  1. there should be no oligarchical moderation of this subreddit

  2. we should stop focusing on the drama and get back to the important issues for which, as I understand, this subreddit was intended.

  1. How do we accomplish this?

  2. As long as there is censorship there will be drama, but I agree.

How do we accomplish this?

Really simple, actually. Start your own subreddit.

Not a bad idea

/r/anarchonspiracy isn't taken...

I agree. All this drama is just making more noise to filter through.

Reddit without moderation would be a nightmare, honestly.

Reddit used to be a bottom up type of system, now it is turning into a top down type organization with overactive mods. The ability to "shadow" ban people, etc. WTF is right.

[deleted]

Mods do not have that ability, sorry.

What? Being overactive?

[deleted]

Banning? We rarely do. Deleting posts? Nope. Deleting comments? Nope, rare.

He said overactive. As in, no one needs you to be doing the 'job' you are doing.

[deleted]

Banning, participating in drama, 'moderating', deleting threads

Really, once of any of the above should qualify as unnecessary

[deleted]

Well, bans were just one of the examples I provided. I've seen a few unwarranted bans that lack a warning. Don't say bad things about 9k, he doesn't like it!

I don't recall suggesting any rules and I didn't see any threads.

[deleted]

You've guys have never responded to me in the numerous times I've mailed you under the various accounts that you have banned

You are coy and nothing more. Certainly not honest!

[deleted]

Geez, I would love to converse with you on my main... but it was banned a while ago. No one is being deceptive, guy.

Did you think I was asking for you to dig to the bottom? Because I certainly don't give a crap. You've already shown yourself to be full of it.

[deleted]

That's not how this works.

Oh? How does this work?

I didn't ask you to take any actions. And I didn't complain to say that it should be changed.

I posted to say that you guys literally don't do what you say you do. You don't give warnings and you don't respond to the ban-ings when they happen, There is no amount of discussion that would change that.

I'm posting this information so other people that have experienced the same thing can know they weren't the only ones. I know I appreciate it when I see such posts.

You're going to look quite foolish when we release our complete modlog and you're not in it, because your complaint is based on a lie.

Yeah, I'd like to see that happen. You are a bit ridiculous to think that someone would make all of this up to argue with you.

I made this username yesterday, precisely because of this problem. There appears to be a very serious case of mod abuse going on and sunshine-x seems to be the guy doing damage control.

From what I've seen, your statement in a previous comment rings quite true.

You are coy and nothing more. Certainly not honest!

He's quite the master of duck, dodge, and direct blame at the victim.

See: http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Duck_test

HomegrownTerran stirred up a hornet's nest of people who've experienced this same thing. Have they accused you of being HGT yet?

EDIT: Was Orangutan also HGT?

No, they haven't accused me of being HGT although I get accused of being 'NoLibs' a lot

You need to differentiate mods (of subreddits) and admins (sitewide, reddit employees). Only the latter can shadow ban, but rarely get involved afaik. The automated spam filter does it as well, I think.

Do you know how I would get in touch with the admins about this?

Go to /r/reddit.com. Even though that subreddit is closed, it is still the location of the admin modlist. That list of mods gets updated every time a new admin is added. Send modmail to them there.

I'm doomed. Reddit has turned into Digg. We need a new Reddit.

hear,hear!!!!

Fact checking !! e.g. When suddenly quotes from famous people start appearing get up voted to the top, while being utter bull shit

We could have something like IAMA, of course not in the true/false spectrum, this is /r/conspiracy amd everyone is entitled to their opinion, but at least flagging what is utter BS / propaganda / clear disinformation etc.. .

The system of up/downvotes, should've been able to handle this, but it doesn't. This will help center the discussion around whta the OP posted.

I'm too new here to have my opinion matter, but I'll throw something out here to start some discussion.

As near as I can gather from today's activity alone....

The last few days have been quite tumultuous here, it seems. Most of it appears to be due to some of the current and former mods. I suspect that much of it is trollery. Sadly, however, it appears that some of that trollery has been done by current moderators. This doesn't speak well of this subreddit.

So, your suggestion of having the mods volunteer to step down makes a little bit of sense. The problem, though, is that some of them wouldn't. And the ones that did step down would be surrendering control of the subreddit to those who didn't step down.

I can only assume that illuminatedwax isn't displeased with any of it or he would have intervened by now.

You are home grown terran, aren't you?

That all depends. I haven't figured out if he's a good guy or a bad guy yet. If he's a good guy, then yeah, sure, I'm him. If he's a bad guy then, no way, José.

NB4 Nice try, HGT.

;)

Yeah, seems fucked up on their end to even let it get this far. It's like they are getting off on this.

[deleted]

I'd like to see proof that they high jacked the u/ImJulianAssange account.

I recall it being compromised by fear-mongering gossip by HGT.

The result was disastrous and we lost a frequent contributor of links.

Yup. That's what happened.

Hang the bastards!

I'll take a stab at your questions. Note: I am only speaking for myself and these are just opinions. I hope you find at least some of it useful.

Why the fuck are there even moderators on a site that was designed to have the users generate and moderate their own content (unless in cases of obvious and extreme abuse)?

I have been using the Internet for 15 years now and there are always people that have the keys to the kingdom (or at least some keys). The vast majority of websites do not run themselves despite attempts at automation. Websites as large as Reddit simply don't function without admins, mods, etc performing various tasks. We don't live in a perfect world.

What are your thoughts on having the mods volunteer steeping down?

I don't really care if they stay or go. I come here because I enjoy looking through the links and comments that are posted. I am an adult and thus capable of ignoring or not participating in things I feel are propaganda, disinfo, cointelpro, marketing campaigns, or just undesirable in general.

What are your thoughts on the clusterfuck that is r/conspiracy?

I don't feel /r/conspiracy is a clusterfuck. Nearly everything in life has ups and downs. Perhaps you and others like you are experiencing a temporary down moment.

How can we better discuss and share alternative ideas and media without all the BS that is going down?

Reddit is not the only website on the Internet. A few minutes spent at your favorite search engine looking for conspiracy topics that interest you will yield a plethora publicly available websites, discussion groups, IRC channels, forums, etc. Another option you might consider is exploring the deep web and privately run communities. If those options don't work out then start your own website and manage it the way you feel is best.

Look, I hear you and I trump your 15 years by 6 more. I know how and have been searching/researching the internet for years. What I like about reddit is how many different types of people are all in the same place, it makes for the best/newest content on the internet if you ask me. I could go and make my own site but I'd rather not reinvent the wheel.

What I don't like is the alleged manipulation of this r/ and the redditors of it. I'm asking for solutions on how to fix this thing, not accept that this is just a down and hope it gets better.

Do you have any suggestions of other 'communities'?

We all know (or should) that everything on Reddit (and the internet) is being streamlined into a fusion center and/or the NSA.

Do you have a link or something to corroborate?

I thought that was common knowledge. I'm going to be a bad OP and tell you to let google answer that for you. Everything is being recorded, its a matter of what is being looked at and how 'they' respond to people they deem a threat. Sorry, just about to get off work.

OK. I'm not taking that for an answer. :)

When you get home, post up a link or two that way I can read what you have read and draw my own conclusion. Who knows? It might even be the same as yours! LOL!

William Binney (former NSA employee and one of the architects of the system which is doing the monitoring) has asserted that the NSA is recording everything.

Again I ask "Got a link?" I truly wouldn't know where to even start looking at for this info.

Thanks for that. My next question is, if TPTB are really powerful, why is this guy around?

My next response is: I'm not real adept at playing these trollery games with debunker trolls. My guess is that he, being NSA-level smart, has played his cards well. In one of those videos, he tells how the FBI arrested him at gunpoint -- in the shower. Then, they asked him to tell them about any crimes he knew of, so he ratted out Bush and Cheney. LOL

I'm not a debunker troll, though. I am only asking the questions a lot of people don't wanna answer. And you know why they don't?? Because it blows their theory to shit. As well it should because any theory that is well thought out and possibly true has hard evidence to back it up. 9/11 sounds like OpNorthWoods so sure, it's possible.

When someone hangs on every word AJ says, I ask the same question: Why haven't the Federales whacked him out? Why just arrest him (Binney) in the shower? Why not trump him up on some false charges, you know, like they did to James Holmes because his father was gonna testify in the LIBOR case that was never gonna happen in the U.S., ever, and no one is able to produce a witness list for a European inquiry.

I do it because someone needs to keep this subreddit subjective and relevant. Because before you know it, r/conspiritard trolls will be all over us again like Ethiopians on a cheeseburger. Remember that? This place fuckin blew at that time because of it.

Perhaps you are, perhaps you aren't.

But, the speed with which you responded after I provided you that list of about 10 links indicates that you didn't look into any of it before firing off another debunker question. This makes you, at least in appearances, a troll. You could have at least watched one of the short videos and then asked a real question. Instead you chose the short, fast, fire-back-another-quick-question route so commonly associated with debunker trolls.

Yes, I've read the Gentleperson's Guide to Forum Spies.

Just because I didn't have enough time to watch videos doesn't make me a troll. Just because I can skim an article enough to ask a question doesn't mean I am a troll. I will have you know I have been reading about him in another tab on my computer, while I interact with others here, and I still gotta ask the first question again: Why?

I know you don't have an answer. I also know that you (and others) usually call the person a troll when you don't have those answers. It's easier than admitting that maybe you were wrong about something. This is the problem in this subreddit. We are losing objectivity by the buckets when we automatically call someone a troll for asking the hard questions.

But, you know, whatever...

He's revealing unclassified stuff from 5 or so years ago and, not being a journalist, may not embarass the state beyond his recent admissions. Not a huge danger to the status quo.

I guess that may be possible. Thanks for pointing that out.

He confirmed that they're monitoring the phone and internet. This has been common knowledge since the Bush regime, although it's nice to have an insider admit it. Monitoring is bad, but different than having sites integrated with fusion centers. I don't think they're at that level of sophistication yet.

Seems like a well-run subreddit to me. Have you ever moderated a subreddit? Mods are needed, mainly for removing spam false positives.

You obviously haven't seen the shit hitting the fan lately.

I've seen some garden variety Internet drama. What of the drama would you qualify as shit hitting the fan?

The current mods are not the problem. The problem is a disgruntled ex-mod that keeps trying to cause problems here using numerous account names.

[deleted]

I still think you are both HGT and emanunnaki, among many others.

The mods are not helping the situation and are fanning the flames as far as I can tell.

The lack of moderation is what leads to this though. By allowing the poster to continuing just blatantly trolling with photoshopped images, just for the sake of allowing people to do whatever they want, it leads to this mess.

Moderation would take care of the mess.

This is the impression I've gotten, as well.

/r/anarchonspiracy isn't taken...

Mods do not have that ability, sorry.

What? Being overactive?
