Actually no, all the Mayans predicted is that we would enter the 13th baktun on this date, which is exactly what happened. The prophecy has been fulfilled.
First of all, the "end of the world" that was predicted came about because several years ago they found a Mayan long count tablet that ended on 12/21/12. That is the only reason why people assumed it would have any significance: the calender abruptly ends on that date. Even though Mayan translators explained the calender system of Baktuns, this idea spiraled out of control. In 2009, the next long count calender was found, so this should have ended the hysteria.
Now, let's look at what the Mayans actually 'meant' with the coming of a new age, which is a very likely scenario. Millions, possibly up to the number of a billion people have fed into this bullshit apocalypse hype created by the western world. As this time passes over, all of these people who have been preparing for this date for years will suddenly realize that their purpose isn't to survive the end of the world; it's just to survive, to live, to do, to create their own purpose. As we pass one of the most anticipated doomsdays in history, I would say the realization that our social problems aren't going to fix themselves out of some prophecy is enough to wake anyone up into a new age of human potential and responsibility, as the Mayans actually predict with the end of the Baktun.
what stupid, gullible end of the world theory will you waste countless time on next?
Far from stupid or gullible, the world economy is on the verge of collapse at the same time we're about to go into WWIII. There will be civil unrest nearly everywhere, and it's no coincidence that the US is currently trying to disarm the public. When people have limited access to resources like water and medicine, food, money because their government failed to protect them from bankers, lied to them, purposely disarmed them, and acted only on personal interests the type of civil unrest occurring will seem like the end of the world for many. This isn't just a doomsday theory. It's an inevitability of current circumstances.
I believe in 2029 we're supposed to be either blessed with a close call or struck by an object. Apparently if we're struck it will likely strike the pacific and we can observe the effects without going the way of the dinosaurs.
Astronomers still stress that it is very likely the risk will be reduced to zero with further observations. And even as it stands with present knowledge, the chances are 97.8 percent the rock will miss Earth.
Next year's passing comets! One of them is 3 km wide. The dinosaur one was 10 km wide. The 3 km one will be passing between the earth and the moon. If we're lucky!
Edit1: Oh has it passed? I didn't know. That's a relief. I thought it would be brighter than Apophis as it's so much bigger. I heard it was gonna outshine the moon.
Edit2: Do you have a link? Most people seem to think it's next year and will outshine the moon.
I did not waste any time at all. I did learn about an ancient culture and their astronomical skills and interest in the passage of time. I hope that our realignment of awareness in our sweet home sphere due to their skills is followed by actions that correct our previous behaviour.
Why is this douchebag getting upvoted. A sort of insult to all of us that enjoy this subreddit. Anyone here with a brain knew the world wasn't ending, It's the start of a new age. You really think you can say nothing happened? What did you expect? OP seems like the one wasting time on a stupid theory. Keep this shit out of /r/conspiracy
Why would a 'New ager' go on about the end of the world? New agers are about a new age, which is exactly what we are entering today. The whole apocalypse bs is just fear mongering for the idiotic masses.
Sorry, I forgot to add IMO in my first comment.
Many ancient civilisations understood that humanity goes through ages right, and today marks the death of the old age of mankind and the birth of a new one, hence 'new age'.
As far as today turning apocalyptic, I am skeptical.
So you were the only engineer in the world that figured out how the problem needed to be fixed, and you were the only engineer that implemented that fix on all the legacy systems it needed to be implemented on worldwide? Or were you A engineer that got the fix handed to him for the systems YOU oversee and then you pushed that fix that someone else came up with?

Thank you.

You know how many talk about a New Year? This cycle doesn't happen quite as often. Relax.

There were plenty who did, but they got downvoted to oblivion and off the bottom of your screen.
They'll be back soon, with a fabricated Nostradamus quote or something.

I missed that note. What was the significance of 6:11am EST?
1 throwaguay 2012-12-21
That was when the Mayan calendar resets.

Come now It's not the end of the day yet.
The world can use an apocalypse or two to shake things up from our rut.

Still, a little spooky.

I can't wait for this to be over. I can't wait to see all the new agers faces when nothing happens. For great glory of the internets.

Y2K was a real world software problem that was resolved through the hard work of a lot of software engineers.

Don't we have a similar "Y2K" event for Unix rolling around, soon? Something about how many digits were allocated for total seconds?
