It's very rare I see 5,000 up votes, and the only times I can remember huge numbers like that, it's a corny joke.

Current top post in /r/todayilearned has over 12,000 upvotes (and 10,000 down). It's not that uncommon at all. I only selected TIL because I had it open in another tab at the time.

Its existence shows that Reddit can be gamed, and certainly is being gamed.

This won't change until social media find a way to ensure legitimacy on voting, or get rid of voting for something else to rank stories and comments. Right now, political shills game r/conspiracy easily. There are certain subjects and topics that almost automatically get hammered down. For example, criticizing certain politicians and certain countries guarantees operatives banging in downvotes.
