On this note, why is it that we can get a dorner meme on the front page of reddit with like 1.7k upvotes, but not a legitimate discussion?

The average person is afraid of legitimate discussion on serious topics. They take better to these things presented in a simple stylized fashion.

And this is part of the reason why I feel memes shouldn't be entirely discarded here. They at least bring certain newbies into thinking about things more critically.

I may have to agree with you, although it is sad that the important text has to be attached to a picture for more people to pay attention and get involved. Fucking read, people.

Yeah. I definitely agree. I myself read a lot, but I - like I imagine everyone - come across certain things might have very valuable information but that I might still go "Wo. No way." to if I see a wall of text.

I would imagine if the wall of text came with a tl;dr, and I found that tl;dr interesting, I would probably read the entire thing.

Memes can sometimes be looked upon as a tl;dr's tl;dr.

Memes are for a pretty low common denominator of human intelligence, but if you use a meme to MOTIVATE the people to investigate very interesting, very compelling things (like the shit TPTB are in to), then there's a possibility that you can use memes to actually LIFT UP many otherwise brainless people toward reading and investigating more.

Perhaps this might be a bit too hopeful, but I think it might help at least a few meme addicts.

The average person shill mod is afraid of legitimate discussion on serious topics....

I might have FTFY.

People dont have the attention span of a gnat any- OH LOOK, A KITTY!

A kitty? Where? Where?

people don't upvote the right shit.

this in my opinion is the right shit to upvote

Legitimate discussion

Conspiracy theories

I've spotted the issue.

The mods could maybe start enforcing rule #8.

Regardless of whether the post has upvotes or not.

On the other hand, I have seen some brilliantly communicative posts here that have consisted of nothing more than a picture with some words on it.

Maybe an agreement as to what a meme is would be a good start.

I feel the rotating picture in the sidebar has done more detriment than good. I see posts where I know they are only trying to get their picture linked... and they use big fonts to make sure it's graphically pleasing.

Regardless or not of brilliant communication, there is a subreddit specifically for memes.

I agree, however, is it a meme when it's a picture with text on it, or is it a meme when it begins to be repeated? Is it the format or the use?

Quite often, the first time we see it is an inspiration. That's why it gets picked up and spread everywhere.

Wow, a whopping 503 subscribers.. should get lots of eyeballs over there.

Not all pictures count as memes.

Not all memes count as pictures.

Not all Counts are pictured meme's

If a picture is only seen once on the internet, is it a meme?

If by "meme" you mean any picture with text over it, I have mixed emotions about it. Using Conspiracy Keanu, Philosoraptor, etc should definitely stay confined to conspiracymemes, but I, at least currently, feel that a nice to-the-point picture with text over it which gets a significant amount of upvotes (and thus gives this sub more visibility) can be conducive to growing this community and waking more people up (which I strongly believe should be the ultimate goal of anyone here). I understand that getting stupid people in this subreddit will be a burden and frustrating, but is keeping a civil, educated, open minded discussion really more important than changing the world to the point where this no longer has to be "conspiracy theory" but accepted fact which can then be acted upon to change the paradigm? Also I'm sure there are thousands of redditors who are open minded, whose participation could be conducive to civil discussion, people who could join us in our fight for disclosure and protection of liberty, if they only were made aware of places to find information and educate themselves (such as this subreddit).

I'm seconding this. If the sidebar explicitly states there's a place for them and that they are no longer allowed here then either enforce the sidebar or 86 the rule.

There is a good reason for the separation of memes: Separating the community into information and infotainment.

It is fine that you like to be entertained, but do you really find it appropriate for the unlawful killing of a whistle blower to be "lulzy?"

Is there any content appropriate to this sub that should be taken so lightly?

Do you think a "holier smarter than thou" attitude really invites critical thinking from the uninitiated?

Do you think this picture Is more compelling than the the link Only in America do plastic IDs survive burning buildings!

How could the picture add more to the discussion than a worthwhile source?

A poster can be succinct without resorting to image macros.

Great post. Thanks. 'infotainment' is a perfect word for it.

Interestingly enough, most conspiracy theories are, in fact, memes.

How ironic.

they behave like memes in the wild, but once they are exposed, they are crimes. plain and simple.

Unfortunately this is what the student generation has come to... glancing at the meme, watching the youtube video, instead of good old fashioned reading.

tl;dr.

"You're ruining my internet!" /r/conspiracymemes is a stupid idea, who wants to go see memes only, let alone conspiracy memes only, it's fucking retarded. Let's just let Reddit do it's thing, which is upvotes and downvotes what people want to see will speak for itself.

Hardly. You children can go play in the sandbox. ~> /r/conspiracymemes

No seriously though. That's how Reddit works, if they're getting upvoted then people obviously want to see them. I don't mind a witty meme from time to time but I sure the hell aint going to no damn /r/conspiracymemes to read nothing but that. All you're doing is segregating content to a place where nobody is going to see it resulting in... less content! yay!

Memes are fucking stupid.

What the fuck kind of candyassed distraction of a fucking post is this? You're annoyed? You're offended? Then downvote.... Period. I am truly fucking disgusted that you would even bring this shit up. Glad you have the right to, but disgusted none the less. Do you want to see my papers too? Or maybe we should link our Reddit ID's to real ID's, then we can track the evil memesters... What the fuck?! Of all places to try to impose more Fucking regulations... /conspiracy... Are you fucking with us?? Really? Are you? I hate trolls, oh hey, lets do a no trolls regulation too, oh and im kinda sick of sandy hook, lets ban that too... Holy shit! Also, the most common way people cope with information they find uncomfortable or bothersome, is with humor. It's pretty natural for a subject to be laughed at, shit, if i cant even laugh at how fucked up things are anymore, then I'll just eat a glock round and be done. Wow!

Many seem to not realize, the memes are getting more upvotes than downvotes. Clear indicator that they aren't viewed negatively by most people.

There is what, maybe 2? Usually only 1 meme on any given page.

Conspiracymemes is just silly and nobody wants to go there, they want to go here. Why is this petty situation even an argument?

I'm surprised by it & don't understand the hardline approach. Memes distract me & take my attention away from more important discussions maybe 0.000003% of the time. Really. And every once it a while I see a good one that makes a clear concise, well-conceived point. And I'm glad I saw it.

No, I won't be going to r/conspiritardmemes or whatever it is, I mean come on. That's silly. I'm just honestly surprised that memes are such a problem here, because I'm on this sub a lot every day & they just don't bother me. They don't get in my way, or distract me. Every now & then I will click on one, maybe give it an upvote if it is good.

If you don't like them fine, downvote them early so they don't get on the front-page, but I think a heavy-handed solution is the wrong way to go.

Meta posts about memes < memes

STFU and downvote them.

Just report them to the mods.

Memes are a great way to make a point quickly. Quit the butthurt

They also attract an immature fanbase which can easily be spotted by the terms they use such as "butthurt"

Sorry, I didn't realize this was the Elder Elite only.

Then post them in the conpiracy meme subreddit. That's exactly why it was created. It's a way to separate the men from the boys.
