[meta] Regarding shills
4 2013-04-13 by KonDon
If someone is a moderator or a frequent commentator on r/conspiritard, why are they allowed to post here? I have no issue with people having issues with various conspiracies, but If you don't believe in a single one, why on earth are people posting on /r/conspiracy instead of r/politics? That's the end of my rant.

conspiratard member talking about a recent /r/conspiracy thread:

Correct and agreed.
Um, so why aren't the mods here doing something about this? Why aren't they even responding to this very thread and the things being brought up in it?

I see no problem banning people who purposely derail threads.

The people of conspiratard do not outright disbeleive all conspiracies. They make fun of what they call "conspiracy culture" which is a real thing and has very little to do with skepticism.
I reccomend you try lurking there every now and then, know thine enemy and all...

If there's one thing that a good online community needs, it's to shut out and ban anyone who disagrees with them.
2 KonDon 2013-04-13
I have no problem with dissenting opinions. Imagine a forum about WW2 planes, I'm fine with someone liking some and hating others, but if that person doesn't even like planes, why are they posting?
-2 klapaucius 2013-04-13
As long as they're discussing planes, why would they be banned?
6 KonDon 2013-04-13
That's the point. All they do is say "planes suck, I hate planes, you guys are losers/wierdos/some insult for enjoying planes".
1 klapaucius 2013-04-13
They apparently have an interest in the subject, even if they think that conspiracies are fiction.
Would you propose some sort of ideological quota for posting here? Maybe you have to at least think the Jews did 9/11, and if you don't, we don't want your kind around here? Or if not that specific conspiracy, maybe two or three lesser ones. JFK being killed by the CIA isn't enough, but toss in lizard people and/or fluoride being mind control and you're okay to talk.
After all, the ability to express yourself in a public forum should be restricted to people who follow the agenda of the people in charge. That's the core value of /r/conspiracy.

Good point. Maybe the only limitation is not being a mod or frequent poster on /r/conspiratard
3 klapaucius 2013-04-13
Why? I don't see why you'd want to shut them out. /r/politics has a similar general attitude about conspiracies, but do you think they'd be justified in banning anyone who posts here?

Disruption should be bannable but not dissent. They aren't mutually exclusive.
2 no1113 2013-04-13
Those two things are often indistinguishable from one another.
1 Prometherion666 2013-04-13
I'm speaking on like forum sliding, harassment, etc. If I hadn't ever had vigorous debates, life would ultimately not evolve as quickly. Figured the "mods" would handle this basic stuff, shit has names and manuals.
1 no1113 2013-04-13
Well, I think while disruption and dissent might sometimes appear to be indistinguishable from one another, I DO think that forum sliding IS a bit distinguishable and can indeed be noted. I'm not sure that overt forum sliders - especially the likes of which come in from r/conspiratard - shouldn't be culled. It, by its very name, keeps people from focusing no the real issues.
This is a great point, and in that sense, there might be a use for NOT immediately banning conspiratard forum slider types, but...I guess it's a fine line, and there seems always the risk of further diluting this sub otherwise.
1 Prometherion666 2013-04-13
Yeah its a tough call but overall I hold merit in the "mods" performing the necessary reviews and such to keep the sub from being a giant shit pile.
1 no1113 2013-04-13
I'd hope. Feels sometimes that this sub's perpetually on the fence between being a place for serious critical data (which I feel it thus far has been enough) to being a giant shit pile.

Read the side bar:
People should be banned for being dicks/trolls/deliberate antagonists, but not just for disagreeing with you.
And as you brought up shills, its worth noting that even just a perfunctory look through this sub should reveal that many shills are are on the conspiracy side: paid posts to propagate misinformation on behalf of the professional "truthers"

"paid posts to propagate misinformation on behalf of truthers"
Lol are you kidding me?
-1 Your-Wrong 2013-04-13
Not to point any fingers, but the only commenters i ever consider detrimental to this sub use the word "shill"
1 no1113 2013-04-13
The problem with this happens if others' opinions are used to destroy the core of the forum you're trying to build. What's the point of allowing those kinds of opinions?
If a subreddit is created called "KSA: Kill Subreddit A", then it might not be a horrible idea for subreddit A to keep those people belonging to KSA out, no?

Think of it this way. Shills are a mental virus. We can't stop the fact that they exist (with current tech), but we can build up an immunity to them through exposure.
-3 iam_sancho2 2013-04-13
They have just as much right to post here as others have the right to post to r/conspiratard. Their arguments should be welcomed, their ad-hominem attacks should be ignored.
There may be a common trait among the /r/conspiratard people and that is that they have a juvenile mentality that enjoys calling other people names in order to soothe their fragile egos....so they are flawed individuals at the very least.
It may go deeper with some of them, however. If one looks at their comment history, one would discover a surprising amount of them are only concerned with a few touchy issues, like 9/11 controlled demolition, geoengineering and almost always: Israel. They have no problem calling you every name in the book, they do not defend any other groups of people, yet at the same time they jump on any comment they falsely interpret as anti-semitic, like Larry Silverstein blowing up his WTC towers.
Look through their comment history with "ctrl-f" to look for key words, I'm sure you will be surprised (or not).

You are a perfect example: combative, not incredibly bright, very bothered by anti-semitism but not bothered by any other form of racism.
