North Korea may have a cobalt bomb capable of causing extinction of life on the planet and making conventional warfare obsolete. Checkmate.

Basically, this guy claims that North Korea, China and Iran have large, underground military bases that they have lined with tons of cobalt. North Korea has made a cobalt bomb using their reactors to make Cobalt-60. If you have enough cobalt (which is in abundance) and you hit it with a nuke or a bunker buster, it will end life on the planet.

The short version is that if DPRK launches a missile over Japan and it has even a small amount of Cobalt-60 (less than three pounds) and Japan shoots it down, it will kill everyone on the island. The same goes for Guam and South Korea.

If DPRK has a missile capable of reaching the US, puts Cobalt-60 on it, and the military shoots it down, it will still kill everyone.

If the cobalt bomb exists, it would render the US military and their approach to warfare obsolete.

Well, shit. Looks like I picked the wrong week to stop sniffing glue.

If.

Oh no. My god. WMD's in Iraq were nothing compared to this. I hope they invade soon. I mean, surely this is true why would they lie to us this time?

If North Korea has control of a giant seafaring lizard that is immune to machine guns and can shoot lighting from its mouth, that would be a concern, too.

Thankfully, when someone just makes up some bullshit, it isn't really productive to be worried about that bullshit, what with it being fiction and all.

Cloverfield was just predictive programming.

He is a shill. Been shillin around here for awhile now.

shills just like the comfortable matrix they're still plugged into.

but then again they probably havent got anything remotely like that

QUICK EVERYONE PANIC!!!!!!!!

Seriously your going to believe that bullshit?

North Korea doesnt hve a omb like that and never will. I m still not sold on the science behing the so call "Cobalt-60" bomb anyways. Its alarmist crap just like the same shit they are trying to selll you as an excuse to go to war. The only problem is...NK doesnt have anything we want so why bother invading?

Because the process of mining and refining cobalt is costly and detailed. They have spent too much time trying to make effective nukes, this would be even more expensive and more difficult to hide.

[deleted]

Yes they're mining it..but with the backing of people who have they money and clearance to do it. It's like uranium mining, regulated and monitored, plus...once again the refining process is difficult and expensive.

Yes, but cobalt-60 is a much rarer isotope than is normally found in the mining of cooper. ( which btw is essentially the molecular foundation for cobalt) While cobalt is mined often...cobalt-60 is more difficult and often needs a lot of processing and refining. This is why regular cobalt can be mined with a problem..but cobalt-60..that's another issue. That's also why there isn't a glut of " cobalt-60 " bombs in the world.

You can refine cobalt into cobalt 60 with a nuclear reactor.

Yes that's my point..expensive and kinda difficult.

Not really. So how do YOU know so much about weaponizing cobalt? I mean, if it's so tightly controlled and all that. . .

Interesting that your posts are being upvoted by more than just you when the thread can't even be found now.

How much do you get paid?

Lol..I wish I were getting paid. I just hate to see people panic and talk about nonsense simply because they are waiting for a boogeyman.

Yeah, that would be believable if there weren't downvoting of my posts and upvoting of yours (beyond just one), even though the thread can't be found. So unless you're spamming upvotes (for what reason makes no sense since this thread can no longer be found), it sort of points to your involvement.

Well there's no conspiracy or anything here. I've got a history of commenting on a lot of things.

bout three fiddy

Looks like were all going to die horrible, horrible, horrible deaths. Or not.

We use cobalt drills in machine shops all the time. They tried that same scare a few times over the decades. Forget about it. It's fake.

A quick read-up on cobalt bombs suggests that stockpiling cobalt-60 to prevent being bombed would be a scorched-earth policy at best. While fallout is predicted to last a while, it doesn't been like the numbers add up for how much it would take to destroy the world. It's just a way to make a dirty bomb; the idea that it could destroy the world seems to have been popularized by the book "On the Beach".

That having been said, it's not infeasible that big swaths of territory could be subject to area denial with dirty bombs. Strategically placed that could be a huge deterrent to an invasion. I don't see North Korea having that capability at this time.

Thank you for your thoughts on the matter. I wonder what that would do the US military presence in the region. . . if they had sufficient amounts to screw over South Korea?

Not then, not now.

Im still waiting for Saddam's wmd's

Weeeeelll meet agaaaaain dont know wheeeeere dont know wheeeeeen

Amazing song.

What world do you live in that think a cobalt isotope would have an impact on nuclear reaction ? The reason they disappeared from the front page is because the MOD did his job. To bat shit for me, instead read a chemistry book then a physics book the stare at a globe and realize one bomb is still one bomb. No matter besides fissionable material will increase a nuclear bombs yield.

It would seem you've done zero research on this topic. Good job.

Here you go: Cobalt-60.

It's a radioactive isotope of cobalt with a half-life of 5.27 years. It decays into Nickel-60 + electron + gamma rays. The gamma rays are what causes the problem.

Here's the deal. The cobalt has to be irradiated to turn it into cobalt-60. So if there are bunkers lined with the stuff, it's regular old non-radioactive cobalt, because otherwise it would kill you to enter them. Conventional weapons (like bunker-buster bombs) would not convert it into cobalt-60.

The traditional cobalt bomb also uses non-radioactive cobalt. It uses the radiation of the explosion to transmute it to cobalt-60. Or so the theory goes. Nobody has ever built one that anyone knows about.

Or they could be launching pre-made cobalt-60 hoping that someone shoots it down. But then the radiation would play all kinds of hell with the avionics and/or launch site and crew. So that's not very likely.

And lastly, despite how they posture, they have to know that if they did something like this, the rest of the world would gang up and paste them flat in a heartbeat. They may look crazy, but they're not that crazy.

Because the process of mining and refining cobalt is costly and detailed. They have spent too much time trying to make effective nukes, this would be even more expensive and more difficult to hide.
