Shocking 1987 Quote
123 2013-05-06 by smokinbluebear
"Were the Soviet Union to sink tomorrow under the waters of the ocean, the American military-industrial complex would have to remain, substantially unchanged, until some other adversary could be invented. Anything else would be an unacceptable shock to the American economy."
--George F. Kennan, forward to The Pathology of Power... Awarded Presidential Medal of Freedom by GHW Bush in 1989 (Diplomacy)

Damn, this is exactly what Orwell wrote about in 1984.

They probably hold their own elections in secret and have a secret government.

I'm starting to think Orwell's 1984 is their playbook, they are actually enacting everything in it. I should really read it.

You should definitely read it.

Yeah...maybe I'll find an audio book of it for my hour long commute. edit: found it...downloading now.

Ignorance is strength.

I feel like I've already lived it. No need to read.

A common enemy is thought by most scholars to be a defining aspect of culture. It isn't necessary, but scholars want us to buy into that crap because our leaders always want to unite us against fake enemies for control purposes.

I don't find it very shocking... It's not exactly a secret that large chunks of the American economy rely on defense contracts.
1 platinum_peter 2013-05-06
And what is the need for such a large sum of money to be spent on defense? We are the number one defense spender in the world, the next 10 nations behind us combined spend the same amount we spend.
There needs to be an 'enemy' to justify defense spending.

Let alone the sheer size of the military as an employer.

The Soviets knew this way before this Kennan guy did.

Impressive track, the only thing remaining is the "socialist europe". Perhaps the financial crisis is a plot to make socialism a more acceptable idea? Eastern Europe does have representation at European Parliament, though not Russia.
Also:
It is indeed impressive. I am appalled.

beat you to it =P

How is this "shocking"? The U.S. has the world's largest defense budget. In fiscal year 2010, the Department of Defense had a base budget of $533.8 billion. As of 31 January 2013, 1,429,995 people were on active duty in the armed forces, with an additional 850,880 people in the seven reserve components. In terms of economics, this is a massive entity. To analogize, think of any enemy like the former USSR as a contract for services - and a big one. If the US lost that contract, there would be no basis or justification for the investment. Just as a corporation who loses a big contract may have to lay workers off, the same strategy is the focus of this quote, which is just not shocking when you consider the numbers.

The collapse of the Soviet Union was the best thing to ever happen to communism.

I want to understand your line of thought. Care to explain further please?
0 lokomoko99764 2013-05-06
What I took from it was that people do not fear communism as they did during the cold war and will thus be more susceptible to it. I'm sure there are plenty of ex-Soviets or just Marxist-tending Professors that are working in educational institutions, where else would all the Marxist elites come from?

Just like how Hitler committing suicide may have been the best thing he could have done for the Nazi movement. Dying a martyr or something like that.

Seems obvious.

Thank you for your compliance.
This is just wonderful but these kinds of factual historical certainties just aren't as interesting as Alex Jones crying with his face painted.

Fact-based political conspiracies and imperial lies aren't as interesting as fantasies and science-fiction. So strong is the power of America's cultural attractions/ distractions that inane conspiracy theories now provide another easily-accessible level of entertainment. (Both for the sellers and the buyers).
If Americans knew their extent, the real political controversies could provoke rioting and a government collapse. I have no idea why anyone thinks secret societies of reptilians, satanists, Illuminati, Freemasons, vampires, or Jews are more interesting than the truly sinister people who work in the core American government, military, and intelligence circles.

I think you may be missing the point; The real conspiracy everyone is chasing is "which group is conspiring behind the scenes". There is no doubt that there is enormous intrigue going on; the question is who is pulling the strings (groups, not individuals) and for what purpose.
