Wait - so now thousands of Government workers now have access to my passwords, browsing history, my credit card information and my banking info? And I'm supposed to feel safer?

Identity theft is (by all accounts) an horrific thing to happen to anyone... Something is wrong when my personal financial details are able to be picked up by faceless, nameless NSA workers (or sub-contractors) who have pretty much zero accountability to any government department.

Dear American Government
You repeatedly lie to get us into war
You spy on us without telling us
You kill innocent Americans without consequence
You incarcerate a higher percentage of your population than North Korea
You incarcerate innocent people without trial
You torture people
You keep secrets from us
You demand money from us with threats of imprisonment
You allow corporations to write legislation in their own interest
You break your promises
You lie
You borrow money in our name, that cannot be paid back
You want our guns
You read our emails
You have access to all our personal information
And I’m supposed to feel safer?

I like the way you think. If you ever decide to run for office, I'll gladly volunteer to help your campaign. We've got to vote out the trash.

Can anyone explain whether it is theoretically posible that the nsa could curcumvent the security provided by public key encryption i.e ssl, https? I am wondering if given that they likely are tapping all network activity if the keys are ever transmitted or maybe the certificate authorities' traffic is vulnerable to snooping.

If they have access to the certificates then they can see what the want.

Did you read on the news where the state got hacked (I think it was North Carolina? or some state over there...) and all of the information people put on their tax returns were compromised?
EDIT: http://chronicle.augusta.com/news/government/2012-10-26/south-carolina-tax-returns-hacked

Great thought. It's usually blamed on masked men hiding behind computers in Nigeria or similar countries.
It also explains why older people are more prone to just giving many of these people money......usually on false pretenses. Whether it be an orphange, a lottery scam, a dead relative who has millions of dollars waiting for them, they just have to pay taxes on the "found" money up front, and they will then release the money
The people on the other side of PRISM would know exactly what the elderly are passionate about, and pray on them to get these people to give their money, they don't even have to take it.
Very thought provoking post, thank you.
