Apparently the only way he could have received life was by being found guilty of aiding the enemy, which was the only charge he was actually tried on and was found not guilty of today. He plead guilty to all other charges and if I read correctly, they carry a maximum of 20 years.
my understanding is that time served would imply his solitary confinement and torture sentence were punishment enough of a consequence and he would face nothing further. so it would be a victory that he'd have no further discipline. hope that was helpful.
Very. Thanks. But as I've read he could be facing a maximum sentence of 136 years. How many years would he need to get before he has to do jail time? Or to turn the question around, how many years does his current solitary confinement + torture account to?
as to that, it seems to be all up to this judge's interpretation of the espionage act so i am worried for him. i think he'll get little lenience, sadly.
What a complete bullshit, misleading, state propaganda msm heading. What it should have read was:
"Bradley Manning Found Manning Guilty of Most of the More Than 20 Crimes Charged Against Him"
Instead this bullshit pro military police state heading is - as 161719 said - absolutely nothing more than a b.s. PR move on TPTB's part so that the sheeple will go "Woo wee! Victory and Democracy have won the day yet again! See? We do live in a good country! Amurkka! Fuck yeah!"
He wasn't found guilty of those 19 counts, he pleaded guilty to them a long time ago. He was only tried on one count (aiding the enemy) for which he was found not guilty today. So the titles aren't exactly misleading, but I suppose they don't tell the whole story either.

We wont know until he is actually sentenced. If it is time served, then a victory. If it is life in prison, then it is a distraction.

Sentences can be laid together or back to back.

My understanding is that the absolute maximum he can be sentenced is 20 years, but I suppose we will soon see.

Non-American here. In which way is "time served" a victory? Please explain.

Judges discretion entirely.

I assume because he was only tried on one count (also the most serious count) and was found not guilty.
He pleaded guilty to the 19 other counts.
