My friend just got a 3 hour notice of deployment to Syria. He's EOD and is heading out tonight. No news arrival, just saying by to a friend tonight.

No way...if this is real then what the fuck does this mean? Any other military around here?

I haven't been contacted back yet from my buddies in the 25th and 101 and I sent an email to my buddy in the 1st ID from Germany and he says he knows of guys being in Jordan. They have been there for a while though.

Please let this not be true.

No joke. His wife told us few hours ago.

Wow man. Tell him to keep his head down.

Can I ask what unit he is deploying with?

Hes with the 28th EOD

Any word on the 82nd in Bragg?

nothing yet, my wife is a 82nd sustainment medic and nothing yet besides a bunch of medics being sent to South Korea. one medic was taken off the deployment roster 9 days before they were to leave for Afghanistan to be sent to Korea.

What about the infantry? Anything out of the usual?

Nothing to unusual. I'll update in a few days. Notice more training going on.

I am going to ask around to a few guys I know. I wanna find out how widespread this is. Surely Syria would need an invasion.

Obama said that all active duty get paid during shutdown. Calling up as many as they can. Most likely just staging.

Active duty will accrue pay, but only receive payment after the shutdown is over

Yeah, I'm real excited about that too, let me tell ya.

What is the significance of this? Also, I wish the best for your friend.

Boots on the ground in Syria would be a big deal, globally speaking.

So there's no $ to run the government, but there's $ for war?

There's always money for war.

As a quick note, if he were to deploy under UN auspices as part of the weapons inspections (presumably they need EOD types to ensure that CW is safe to move etc..) then that would be reasonable wouldn't it?

I do not know the answer to that but, wouldn't it seem like a conflict of interest to have any US personnel conducting the investigation? Seems they would have to all be UN.

Seems they would have to all be UN.

Anyone working on it would be doing so under the UN (and be wearing a nice blue hat/helmet), but the UN draws its people from its members... I doubt they would want US EOD types to carry out an investigation, but might need their skill sets. I would assume they'd be working along side other multinational personnel.

Nice, thanks for the lesson. I did not know that.

Any update? what unit?

What exactly does EOD mean? Just curious

Explosive ordinance disposal (bomb squad).

I call bullshit. He likely wouldnt be told where he was going and it would be huge news if they were.

this has to be the most trolled subreddit.

then fucking leave....

Weird, before every deployment my unit was told exactly where and when we were going to be on location. Even knew the specific FOB. Youre full of shit.

They will receive orders on paper stating their business

SF is the only ones who dont get told where they are going.
