So I was listening to Spotify on my phone...

On my way to work an advertisement came on spotify for their premium service which specifically noted that it was "perfect for your commute". Today I was at the gym and the same advertisement came on except with the addition of "or at the gym"

It's not too grand-scale, but it definitely was a little unsettling to know that there's robots keeping track of my habits and location.

Location Services

I think this has more to do with advertising strategies.

I listen to spotify in my living room, and I do believe that the advertisements still mention commute and gym, and my living room, but it doesn't really unsettle me that much.

Think that's weird? I was texting my friend about how my heater was broken and he said to turn the oven on and open oven door. I jokingly said that with my luck I would probably gas myself. The next day my google targeted ads went from dating and tech ads to...suicide prevention. The creepy thing I that the conversation with my friend was via text message, not a web browser.

I wrote Boca burgers on a grocery list in my iphone, and the next day I saw an ad for Boca burgers on youtube, on my computer. >.<

Do you have an iPhone?

datamining, you aren't paranoid, others who have downplayed this here are unaware or naive

Please check https://maps.google.com/locationhistory/b/0 and see if you have location history turned on. There are also other services, that can pinpoint the location of your ip.

yes i agree that there's no way this or anything else could possibly be a coincidence

That's an unhealthy amount of paranoia.

This time of year, gyms are peaking in popularity. Hell, I heard a radio ad about one today just a couple minutes after I was talking about how gyms are going to be crowded soon. Does that mean the NSA has microphones in everyones cars? No, it's a coincidence.

I think it would be more reasonable for you to state the overwhelming likelihood that this is paranoia, rather than imply your own personal omniscience by claiming that it absolutely is paranoia to consider that this guy's device may actually know if he's at the gym or on commute.

How do you know for certain, with NO DOUBT whatsoever that his device doesn't have this information?

If i can do this with the Google Places API- so can Spotify

I think the amount of info collected goes beyond almost anyone's suspicion, yet I try to make conservative claims where I have no evidence.

I feel the best evidence is - as you say, if the the devices are capable of certain actions, then it is possible that such capabilities would be utilized. The other bit of evidence, imo, would be the historical tendency for authority to exploit all means at it's disposal to gain and maintain power.

Well put.

Unlimited budget, creativity, and minimal checks and balances. I'm most concerned that we are so concerned with what we can do vs whether or not we should

exactly
