What is with the Sochi Olympics and the fear-mongering in the media?

If anyone has been paying attention to some of the narratives being pushed at the local news level, it is interesting. Just seems to be a trend going on.

Because Bandar is going to attack.

Bandar is probably going to end up killing a shitload of people (he already has, but more), or a smaller amount of people but in a way where the shock factor is equivalent to a larger vanilla body count.

Russia gets blamed for corruption/didn't care/let it happen, media blathers on for weeks, turning public opinion against Putin, probably some more anti-gay bullshit thrown in there to spice up facebook feeds, blablabla.

End result will be 'more security' like fucking everywhere, 'becuz terrorists' and the world will boil a little more and get used to it.

This is a perfect description. It is sad that so many people are oblivious to how the western media works.

Exactly. And unfortunately, the US school system has really failed as opposed to say a country in Norther Europe like Finland or Sweden or Norway. Not saying that education is without bias in those places, but I have had some friends from those areas telling me about mandatory classes in their high schools about doing taxes and other useful skills, as well as having mandatory classes about "Interpreting Media" which teaches you to listen to what is not being said.

The actually want their citizens to be informed so that the government does not run amok.

I work for a school district in Illinois and I can tell you as plain as day, their new scam is indoctrinating these kids to go to college ( at least junior college ) NO MATTER WHAT.

They have college day assemblies FOR MIDDLE SCHOOL STUDENTS ( 3-5 grade ).

In almost every school they have college pendants all over the place, each teacher has their college colors or pendant on their classroom entrance and in their class, they have degree displays where all the teachers pin their degree up, it's insane.

I hate it so much, these kids do not even know how screwed they are.

Conditioning, pure and simple. They are already on about a 'terrorist threat' before the games are even here. This branches one of two ways from here: Something does happen and they say we told you so, or nothing happens as a way to cry wolf for something bigger down the road. Either way, they get to yet again remind people of the "threat" of terrorism being just around the corner, and that they'd better be afraid or else.

I've been noticing this for weeks now. The other thing I've noticed is the pro-NSA idea that 'americans are slipping back into a dangerous pre-9/11 mindset.'

I fear that something's going to happen to "remind" us back into compliance. The idea being that while americans are all focusing on the danger that Sochi faces, something will happen to one of our beloved sports events...

Payback for Putin clowning obama over Syria

oh man, local news is the easiest propaganda to see

Its advertising, it will get you to watch because "something might happen"...

For those of us that don't follow local or national news, could you elaborate?

Shit like this.

Also they are reiterating the fact that Russia does not want United States security there.

Hmm, interesting. I have seen articles over the last several months about anti-russian group(s) trying to pick fights with them. Like I said, I don't follow MSM networks for obvious reasons so I haven't noticed any "fear mongering". Based on these two articles alone, it just seems like they are taking what is already known to be real threats and spreading the word to keep your eyes up and ears open. If this "russia's bin laden" is a serious threat, then I would call the reports more warnings then any kind of mongering. If you have more sources to back up over sensationalizing of the topic, I would love to check it out. Plus a link to russia not wanting US security there would be an interesting read as well.

If you haven't noticed the obvious western media surge towards making people hate Russia, then you are probably beyond all hope.

Also I noticed even ESPN asking athletes if they fear for their lives in Sochi.

It's all over conspiracy sites too. Not just MSM is going along with the fear mongering.

The most recent SNL had a ridiculous russian-stereotype character on during weekend update.

Because there are obvious concerns with mainly the infrastructure of the games and the city of which it is being held. Just look at that reddit submission yesterday that showed that while Russia is trying to make Sochi look beautiful, there is widespread hardship behind the curtain.

There's dirt and grime behind every fence, in every venue, that has ever been.

Games are for the Royalty, the elite! The general area gets cleaned up long enough to pull off said event and life, behind that fence improves for a time and then slides back.

This was back when I watched TV in an effort to stay informed and long before Internet and cell phones.

Wow, you are gullible as shit. Blatant propaganda posts like that r/pics BS from yesterday are so shallow, anyone with a brain cell should see right through it.

Unfortunately, reddit.com is a front row seat to the stupidity of the masses.

So what's your opinion then? That Sochi and Russia as a whole is a wonderful place full of fairies? Please, tell me how I am being gullible.

STOP LOOKING AT THE WORLD IN SUCH A BLACK AND WHITE VIEW!

Now that I have your attention, does Sochi, Russia have problems? No fucking shit. But it's not the shithole that the OP in that /r/pics post tried to make it look. Here are some nicer images of the city.

PS: Some people are saying that the op in that post had some sort of agenda. I have to disagree with that. He's probably just another ignorant Westerner.

Yes, Russia is a wonderful place. Millions of people live there and are just as content as anyone. If this shocks you then you need to turn off your tv and go visit Russia instead of letting third-party sources with agendas tell you how the world is.

You are being gullible because you actually bought into the propaganda post of some asshole pointing their camera at some trash on the street and saying "Hey everyone, look how corrupt Russia is, what a shit-hole."

If you knew how to think critically then alarm bells should have been going off as soon as you saw tha the entire thread was being turned into another "bash Russia" circlejerk by the ignorant US user-base.

Firstly, where did I say "Russia was a shit-hole"? You are putting words in my mouth.

Secondly, it is obvious that in Russia there are various issues that anyone who is not willfully ignorant will see; there are areas of poverty and underdevelopment in many places in Russia (typically isolated areas, the quality of living in places like Moscow has undoubtedly risen in the past ~15 years), political corruption, presence of quite a large gathering of organised crime, oligarchs due to the swift move to privatise the economy, etc. This is not to say these issues are exclusive to Russia, but they exist.

Lastly, I am not relying on that thread to mold my opinion on Russia, I was merely using it is an example. Reject that thread if you want, but don't reject the obvious facts.

Where exactly do you live where there isn't political corruption and a dilapidated shithole nearby?

If you read what I said, I didn't say Russia is alone in this problems; they of course occur in other countries but sometimes to a lesser degree.

I live in Australia by the way.

And there is not widespread hardship behind the curtain in Australia?

Must be nice not being one of these people: http://thestringer.com.au/carpetbaggers-mercenaries-and-corruption-rips-off-aboriginal-peoples/#.Uua4imQo4y4

That article is addressing the problem of aboriginal rights. Many other countries, including the United States, have had the same issues (but I would argue to a much larger degree). Australia is very generous with the social security benefits to aboriginal people. I don't see how this is at all comparable to Russia.

Half of it is just politics, the American news media is trying to find every embarrassing thing about the games to paint Russia in a particular light. Its like going to a party and complaining about the lights, the sound system, how much better your party was a few years ago.

And the other half is a very real terrorist threat.

Call me paranoid but its the US and Russian security forces working together that creeps me out. If there a major incident was to occur the responses could be more steps towards a one world totalitarian government

yeah yeah... they said the same things about Athens...Sydney..etc.. but not Atlanta!

And yet Atlanta is the only one that actually had a bomb.

Just encouraging Xenophobia is all. I bet nothing happens.

When /r/conspiracy predicts a false flag event at every major sports event it's "valuable information".

When the news media discuss the very likely possibility of terrorist attacks at the Sochi Olympics it's "fear mongering".

Can anyone explain this?

Can anyone explain this?

I guess it's the size of the audience. Very good point.

I guess it's the size of the audience.

/r/conspiracy was absolutely convinced that there's be false flag attacks at the London Olympics. Doesn't get much bigger than that.

I meant the size of the audience they're trying to spark fear in. The MSM has a huge audience so people here see it as fear mongering I guess.

But I agree with your point, barring some real evidence, what both /r/conspiracy does sometimes could be considered fear mongering.
