Has there ever been a proven-true conspiracy theory?

2  2014-02-17 by [deleted]

I'm not asking about the existence of conspiracies, I know plenty of them have existed.

What I'm asking about is if there are any conspiracy theories -- that spent a long time as fleshed-out conspiracy theories before being corroborated by irrefutable evidence that they were indeed true (as in mainstream acceptance)?

I know there are some, like the JFK assassination or increasingly the questions around 9/11, that many conspiracy theorists believe to be settled... but they're still not widely accepted by the historian/journalistic/academic community (whether that's fair isn't the question I'm asking).

Are there any now-known conspiracies that became uncovered as a result of the theorizing and research of independent investigators (e.g. people like those who subscribe to this subreddit) eventually becoming corroborated and settled as fact?

the nsa spies on americans

There were not weapons of mass destruction in Iraq in 2003. Saddam Hussein was never an ally of al-Qaeda.

Elements within the U.S. government conspired to trick the world into believing these two things in order to start the Iraq War.

[deleted]

The conspiracy was that it was bullshit in order to lie us into a war with Iraq over OIL (Operation Iraqi Liberation) that had been planned nearly a decade in advance. Everyone from Noam Chomsky to Alan Greenspan knows this. It's not controversial.

[deleted]

The official story did fall apart pretty quickly. But for a time it was generally believed. Even years after 9/11, most Americans believed that Saddam Hussein was the one responsible.

Wasn't "there are no WMDs" a relatively popular refrain in the mainstream press, though?

I don't think so. It was used as the main justification to go into IRAQ. I can find people who still, to this day, will argue that Saddam probably had WMD's.

I think the no WMD's headlines came out after it was found to be a lie.

Yeah! I'm wondering if it was uncovered as a result of conspiracy investigators

More like simply by investigators who happened to find out it's a conspiracy.

Was there a fleshed-out conspiracy theory surrounding WMDs that ultimately proved true?

The government claims WMDs while it knows there are no WMDs.

We did find shit tons of chemical weapons stockpiles, and biological weapons research. Both of those are WMD's.

[citation needed]

no we didn't.

Also, Operation Mockingbird, MKUltra, MKNaomi, Operation Popeye, and Operation MONARCH all have leaked documents. Not to mention the Majestic-12 document leak that forced the government to acknowledge the existence of Majic and MJ-12.

It's fairly obvious the royals would never allow Princess Diana to marry a Muslim. That whole ordeal reeked of a professional hit.

1953 overthrow of the democratically ellected Iranian prime minister Mohammed Mosaddegh undertaken as 'an act of US forein policy.' Pretty much every iranian knew who was behind the coup as soon as it went down.

Gulf of Tonkin

Tuskegee syphilis experiments

[deleted]

Like most theories... hearsay starts it along with eyewitness accounts.

30 yrs later the govt releases a file That confirms it.

[deleted]

I'm not sure about the Tuskegee experiments but I know for certain the gulf of Tonkin incident was a widley known "conspiracy" before it was finally publicly admitted by the govt.

I wouldn't be surprised to see the govt admit that Roosevelt knew about pearl harbor within the next 15 yrs on a sidenote.

Most of these theories are either fact or disinfo/misinfo meant to scew the facts of what really happened.

I believe the link between Rockefeller and Rothschild was considered a conspiracy theory until they merged some of their business.

[deleted]

Absolutely. The government conspired false-flag attacks to further an agenda.

[deleted]

Ok. What's your point?

"Operation Mockingbird, as it was called, was exposed in 1975 during the Church Committee investigation, which then published its findings the following year. The full name of the committee which investigated and uncovered such activities was called, “The United States Senate Select Committee to Study Governmental Operations with Respect to Intelligence Activities” which was chaired by Senator Frank Church"

If you are still confused I'd suggest looking at the sidebar and reading the definitions of conspiracy and theory.

I think the OP is looking for examples which were first being touted by conspiracy theorists before being proven correct. I may be wrong, but I'm not aware of any claims for the existence of Mockingbird, prior to its disclosure in 1975.

[deleted]

Anyone who investigates a conspiracy is a conspiracy theorist. At some point they would be required to "Theorize" about a "Conspiracy". Even if that individual is an "Investigative Journalist" they would still fit the definition of a conspiracy theorist. That would also include an investigative panel designed to uncover wrongdoings by the government.

The Operation Mockingbird conspiracy was "UNCOVERED" by an investigative panel. It wasn't discovered due to government disclosure. Therefore it was discovered by people who had to theorize that a conspiracy was afoot.

Ill continue....war criminals in our government...we took nazis in...voting (I.e. bush) ...UFOs...charities...pearl harbor...lucafaran(ship that was hit why we entered ww1 spelling?)...the most recent bailout for bankers...gas prices ...Afghanistan? ......

Lusitania

The U boats were sinking so many supply ships they started hiding munitions and supplies on passeneger ships. That was may 7, 1915.

It wasn't until 1917 and the Germans sunk our liner the Housatonic and a few other ships that we (U.S.) officially entered the war.

Again, most of these are unproven (Operation Paperclip is an exception), and overly vague.

Iran contra affair scandal

There is an article named 33 conspiracy theories that turned out to be true. That's a pretty good read. Iran/contra affair is the best one I can tell ya about off the top of the dome.

The Bilderbergers. We still don't know what these world leaders in politics, banking, academia, industry, media, etc discuss in their private meetings. But we do know they get together every year in June for at least a week.

St Louis experiment...soldiers given STDs and other drugs...FBI...CIA..police state...Chem trails...Fukushima... country being dumbed downed...gun rights being taken...constitution destroyed... Obama care...

Can I debate some of these with you? Because I disagree on quite a few of your arguments (for all three comments). Also, most are still not proven true (and some are just utter bullshit i.e. gun rights/constitution).

Start the debate...

Before I start, can you explain in more depth:

  • Mainstream music

  • bible and mind control

  • our food/water

  • Gun rights & constitution

  • ACA

  • FBI/CIA/police state

  • charities

  • syria

  • subliminal messaging

  • dumbing down

Sorry for the long list, but those are all pretty vague and clarification would be great.

Just listen to the lyrics theres nothing poetic or beautiful about it its nonsense to get keep peoples minds closed and fascinated with money cars diamonds ect...have you read any ingredients on the food you eat and researched them ? The bible has the same stories that have been repeated since the sunerians and many different cultures the same Jesus story can be found 25 plus times in history ..dinosaurs walked clearly something else is going on and all the churches want is your money and for you to give up your human life to live by there code ..where does all the billions and billions and billions of $ confiscated go are you streets better?

I get that you don't like pop (and neither do I really), but it's definitely a stretch to say it's trying to control us (and that not all mainstream music even involves the themes you mentioned i.e. electronic subgenres, rock subgenres).

have you read any ingredients on the food you eat and researched them?

Yes I have, and although most processed food are full of artificial chemicals and stuff, that in no way is true across the board with other foods (i.e. fruits, vegetables, bread, etc...)

Now i'm getting kinda confused, and it seems like you're rambling (no offense). Can you show me this Jesus story (without referring to any abrahamaic religion)? Not to mention that yes, we know that dinosaurs lived, and millions of years ago at that. I don't really know what this has to do with religion, unless you're criticizing young earth creationism.

Finally, much of this is also not really a conspiracy. Processed foods aren't that healthy, but that's not a conspiracy. Music might be not as good as in the past, but it's certainly not controlling our minds. As I said before the bible one was just kinda confusing.

What happened when every one donated to Haiti? Why ate they still the same? Japan ? Every other natural disaster ? Starving kids ? Where's the money going

Depends on the charity. If you donate to red cross/red crescent for example, the money goes directly to aiding people affected. Some charities are admittedly not that great (Susan G. Kommen gives a small amount of the money for example) but that in no way mean that all charities are bad, as many are actually really helpful (i.e. Kiva loans, Red cross, doctors without borders, amnesty internation, etc...). It's also not really a conspiracy anyways, more of a criticism of certain charities.

Sorry out of the 1000s...three might be ehh ok

UFO's are actually really interesting, as I have mixe feelings about them. Overal, I think it's probable there is some other life in the universe. However, whether it's actually taken the time to visit here is more questionable. Not to mention that things like Area 51, and quite a few alien encounters (most notably hopskinville goblin has a hilarious explanation). Many UFO sightings can often be explained (although not necessarily all of them, you do have a point there). Either way, I'm also not sure about said conspiracy, or the provability of UFO's and aliens.

Also, I'm not sure what's so bad about ACA, since it means you will finally catch up to the rest of the developed world in terms of universal healthcare. Fukushima is becoming more and more sensationalized by the minute. and it still pales compared to Chernobyl although it was still pretty bad (still the 2nd worst nuclear plant disaster ever). There is also not really a conspiracy for either, or at minimum, not one that's been even remotely proven. The Lusitania is well known to have been torpedoed by a U-boat (we even know what boat it was). You have to be a lot more specific about pearl harbor (not to mention that again it's still not proven true anyways). Same thing with the bailout.

I don't have to do anything...educate yourself my friend

That's not really a response, you just looked at what I said, and said "eh, whatever"

Syria is just as bad as ever media blew it up we helped nothing...watch commercials movies Disney colors in fast food the way markets are set it all of it touches the sub conscious its all proven

I agree Syria is in a bad shape, but that's how civil wars work (not to mention we didn't actually bomb it or even send troops in).

Gun rights and the constitution? Really you don't read ? How does the u s rank with schooling? Use to be top tier where are we now ?

That's not really an answer. If anything the US is too lenient when it comes to guns (although banning them would be stupid and impossible), and I honestly can't see a reason why background checks, closing loopholes and other such measures would be detrimental. Also, if you looked at some of the suff currently going on in US science you'd be impressed. For example, look at Fermilabs new proposal for a project to better understand neutrinos, a project on par with the LHC.

Damn. I used to be just like you. So adamant that I was being deceived at every turn and nothing good was ever happening. I'm so glad I snapped out of that mindset and came back to rational reality. My guess is that you are 18-24 and still a bit confused with your place in the world.

I know my place

Come on. Do you not read history at all? Conspiracies occur every single day. Day in, day out. And are exposed frequently. Do you understand what a conspiracy is?

[deleted]

Ever heard of Pearl Harbor? The Gulf of Tonkin? Hell, even very recently LIBOR. Project Fast and Furious? None of these ring a bell? If that is the case, I'm ashamed for you.

[deleted]

They were all significant conspiracy theories before they were exposed. Do you honestly have no recollection of ANY history? Was the unconstitutional NSA spying widely considered a fringe conspiracy theory before it was proven? I'm not doing all of the searching that you can do for yourself, but I can tell you that every topic I've referenced meets your criteria. Every single one.

Ah, fuck it. You probably won't even search for yourself. Here is one: http://en.m.wikipedia.org/wiki/Pearl_Harbor_advance-knowledge_conspiracy_theory

[deleted]

Any sane minded individual could see that just like 9/11, the strongest military in the world does not allow enemies to get within striking distance without anyone first knowing. My grandfather questioned it immediately, and he wasn't alone. Dig a little deeper, and you will find more.

I only intended to spark your own research into the matter. A springboard to simply start you off. Enjoy your quest for knowledge and truth. The more you find, the deeper this sham becomes.

[deleted]

Every item mentioned previously fits this criteria. And while the shills and controlled news would tell you otherwise, a majority of people do not believe the official government conspiracy theory of 9/11.

You really need to search for yourself now. Unless youre not interested in the truth, or recalling events of the past that should stick out clearly to you? Googe "proven conspiracy theories"

[deleted]

There aren't many competing theories. There is one. Explosives were used to bring all three buildings down. And it matters little every granular specific. The fact that the government issued conspiracy theory is purely fiction speaks volumes to their complicity.

Professional sports are a hoax...the government is your friend....federal reserve...WMD in Iraq...IRS...Vietnam ...mainstream music...haarp...subliminal messaging...still chaos in Syria...mind control from the bible...our food...our water...fluoride...continue?

Cut back on the weed bro.

Please refrain from personal attacks.

seriously?

Edit: It wasn't even a serious statement. Just based off his username.

Seriously. It breaks rule #1.

Edit: If your comment isn't serious I see it not adding to the discussion.

how is lay off the weed a personal attack? I didn't call him any names.

It indicates that the amount of weed he consumes affects his credibility.

Why else would you tell somebody to lay off the weed?

I'm no mod. I'm only attempting to voice the rules where they don't enforce them.

I do understand your position. I know it can be equally used to discredit someone. That wasn't my intention. I won't use it in the future.

Right...you're awake tho

I am. I was in the same spot as you 5 or 6 years ago. I got pretty far by being vocal, but they smashed me down hard.

I don't know what to say without sounding defeatist. I don't think you're far off, but making a reasoned and accurate presentation is the best way to get people on your side.

Haters will hate . This world is filled with parasites and they could continue doing their thing I suppose ...

Love is a better attitude than hate. Sometimes its not their fault. They just exist within a system.

I have nothing but love and understanding trust me .it makes me frustrated when an swears are right in front of peoples eyes and they'd rather make excuses then do a little critical thinking for themselves and put one and one together ......

[deleted]

that was proven true by the mainstream press, not conspiracy theorists.

Did the press theorize the conspiracy? Yes. The press questioned the validity to the claims of WMDs. Then the press investigated and proved one.

[deleted]

I've provided you with an example that fits what you asked.

Examples where a group of investigators, skeptics, amateur sleuths, etc. formed a coherent conspiracy theory and it ended up that their theory was right.

Investigators (journalists) formed a coherent conspiracy theory (WMDs are a lie) and it ended up their theory was right.

You're now changing what you want to be:

a theory that was hashed out by a collection of individuals and was viewed by their contemporaries in the mainstream as nonsense, but was later proven to actually have been accurate.

If you keep specifying and restricting the response allowed you have the ability to allow for no response to be acceptable to your premise.

I've lately felt a part of professional sports are fixed, like when the Patriots went to and won the Super Bowl after 9/11. I'm not saying every game or aspect is rigged, but some of it sure seems like it.

Most of those unproven and pretty vague. Also, can you explain these more, especially the bible thing?

Depends on the charity. If you donate to red cross/red crescent for example, the money goes directly to aiding people affected. Some charities are admittedly not that great (Susan G. Kommen gives a small amount of the money for example) but that in no way mean that all charities are bad, as many are actually really helpful (i.e. Kiva loans, Red cross, doctors without borders, amnesty internation, etc...).
