A reminder regarding doxxing
26 2014-07-11 by AssuredlyAThrowAway
Hello,
This is a reminder that doxxing of reddit users is not acceptable under any circumstances. Your comment/submissions will be removed, you will be banned from this sub, and you will be reported to the reddit admins.
There is absolutely no reason why any reddit user should have their personal information spread. It leads to nothing but horrible things.
If you come across an instance of doxxing please report the comment or submissions to the modmail immediately.
Your regularly scheduled documentary sticky will return in 12-24 hours.
Have a nice evening.

Whats doxxing?

Doxxing is sharing private information that says who the user is.

I was wondering the same thing.

Lets not forget that "doxxing" was the excuse used to get the SH sub (and 3 of its creator's accounts) banned and deleted.
The definition of "doxxing" on this site is vague and open to argument/interpretation.

Just like mostly anything else here, it's the reddit version of a license plate blown bulb. Gives them pretext to delete you if they so choose.

Am I the only one who read that thread and didn't see any mention of horrible things? I saw someone apparently got assaulted but there was no evidence, right?
Sounds like a bunch of internet tough guys doing a monkey dance and nothing ever coming of it, like every other piece of internet drama.

The predditors tumblr (sponsored by something awful) doxxed VA which lead to him losing his job and receiving death threats after that douchebag Chen ran his hit piece. There is a reason why mods of most subs, at the time, banned gawker sitewide.

it's a really shitty thing to do,and i don't agree with it. But i didn't feel too bad about that fucking creep getting fired to be honest.

If you don't protect the rights of those you despise, you don't deserve to hold them yourself.

In reguards to posting ident information (not necessarily of reddits users but of people we would consider public enemies)
Is it considered doxxing if we take information from another site and post it here?
If so, how about just linking to the source of said information?
Edit: words
2 AssuredlyAThrowAway 2014-07-11
Yes, it is considered doxxing if you copy/paste information and or link to the source of said information from an external site.
It is also considered doxxing if you link to information contained within another sub that personally identifies a redditor; even if the user in question doxxed themselves.
*As to your edit;
You cannot post personal information of public figures. There is certain information you can post belonging to public figures, but there is a line.
An example of something that crosses the line would be, for example, posting the FCC Chairmen's home number that you find in the white pages.
3 Ambiguously_Ironic 2014-07-11
Let me preface this by saying I know you didn't make the rules and don't (necessarily) have to agree with them. But:
How do you define "public figure"? If you'll recall, and you probably will, the SH sub was banned for "doxxing" when a link to a lawyer's public website was posted to a thread. It contained no personal information outside of what the person (the lawyer) wanted posted there since it was, ya know... on his own public website, and yet the sub and its creator were still deleted and banned.

I don't know honestly, I think the line is kept intentionally obscure by the admins to give them some wiggle room. There are a few legal decisions out there which define broad classifications of "limited purpose public figures" and "involuntary public figure"; but there is no real set in stone precedent.
This sticky was primarily concerned with doxxing other redditors; the SH situation was dealt with exclusively by the admins so we had no say in that whatsoever. It will probably be that way again in the future, if the admins get involved we have no say and it's their call; every time.
3 Ambiguously_Ironic 2014-07-11
That's kind of what I was getting at.
Censorship and/or controlling a given narrative is dishonest and sneaky by nature so I'm not sure that attempting to "follow the rules" really even matters.
Sure, we shouldn't go around giving out personal information or insulting users or anything but when it comes down to it and a post or user "needs" to be censored, a reason to ban them will be found and, if one can't be found, one will be fabricated.

I have indeed found this to be true during my time on this site.
1 Zenof 2014-07-11
Argument borrowed from BCND
How about posting Officer full name, department addy, dpt phone number and the like
(you can substitute cops for other governmental employees, posting how to reach them without getting too personal via home addy and cell number)
1 Frogtarius 2014-07-11
GPS coordinates?
1 AssuredlyAThrowAway 2014-07-11
That is fine.
