Am I being paranoid ? How intense is the shilling on reddit ?
15 2014-07-27 by alexdrac
I was looking at my post history and one thing really jumped out. Any time I mentioned shills those post, and those posts alone, got downvoted. There's just as much information about them on the web as there is about any other shady gov activity, like spying on citizens and the like, but somehow, this is the one topic the general population refuses to believe. This makes me think of some form of automation that is triggered by the word "shill" . What do you think ?

beyond intense, it's the main hub, the frontpage of the internets...
2 Ferrofluid 2014-07-27
beyond intense, and mostly pointless too.
if the PTB think the public are small children with no brains to understand, they are gravely mistaken.

You are not paranoid. Astroturfing is intensifying.

Again with the proof bit. Dear lord we knew you were dense, but I guess we need to spell it out for you. P.R.O.O.F is a word demanded by disinformation agents. Proof is the opinion of an individual (judge) or group of people (jury... Spelling it out for ya) that examine the validity of evidence to determine fact. You keep demanding proof, but fail to look at the evidence.
It's like watching someone demand a drink of water, but refusing to hold the glass or turn on the faucet. It's time to grow up.

It appears as though you are asking for proof that has either yet to be leaked to the public, or must be independently studied.
Unfortunately, there is no one link that can expose all of the tricks clandestine agencies use for propaganda, social engineering, and psyop attacks.
If you are really interested in seeing the light, you need to start doing your homework.

Why else would shills be in this sub?
Why else would anything this sub says get deleted anywhere else?
Why are articles cross posted from this sub deleted elsewhere?
Why are there down vote brigades on this sub?
This is the only sub I know of that is against the hive mind

It's gotten really bad in the last few months, and noticeably worse in the last year-ish. It's time to organize some sort of mass exodus, but I'm not sure that there's a suitable alternative yet.
If there were a major catalyzing event it'd probably help get the masses moving, but I think reddit is pretty much too captured for that to actually happen. The vote obfuscation was the last straw for a lot of people, though.
7 LOL_CoolJ 2014-07-27
I wouldn't say paranoid at all. Check out my comment history. The majority of my comments that criticize the military-industrial complex will have 50-something upvotes and then a day later, they will be back to 1 or 0. This is usually AFTER a thread loses traction, which I find odd.
2 shockaDee 2014-07-27
I have been seeing the same thing in relation to energy and military topics, almost like they are trying to edit the thread for people reading it in the future for research or something?
2 LOL_CoolJ 2014-07-27
Could the upvote/downvote counts of comments be used to manipulate the apparent conversation and enforce an underlying agenda or theme based on reddit's structure? That would be interesting to look at from a statistician's perspective, but I don't know number magic. :(
1 shockaDee 2014-07-27
In terms of reddit, yes the number of upvotes is indicative of the 'hive mind' in the way the user views the thread. So how the thread looks in posterity, ala when it's old enough that it cannot be participated in, the opinions and views of the hivemind at the time will be set.
I often wonder how history will be written in the information age.
Remember to think bigger too. Reddit isn't the only platform that gets gamed like this. Facebook experiments on their users, and censors feeds. I think this is pretty much common knowledge now. I guess the point is, there is going to be manipulation on all the major platforms.
2 LOL_CoolJ 2014-07-27
Yeah it is strange to be alive in these times. It is almost like living at the advent of the printing press, but even more pronounced. You can go online and learn about the research of astrophysics guniuses, but you can also be tracked by the most advanced Security State network in the history of humanity. It seems to me that the current struggle of the Information Age is if knowledge will be used for advancement through enlightenment or enslavement through deception.

Marketers have noticed that reddit is a huge vehicle for advertising. Ever notice how your favorite celebrities answer your questions (/r/AMA) just before a film of theirs comes out?
/r/HailCorporate is a sub to point out any time marketers use reddit for their own gain.
5 genghiscoyne 2014-07-27
It's almost as if celebrities try to increase awareness for the movies they're in or something.
2 Ferrofluid 2014-07-27
useful for those that like it, and has some historic and social value.
when a person is younger and more idealistic, corporate PR is 100% evil.
but as age ages one, even PR can be useful, so a celeb and his/her PR manager goes on reddit and answers questions and engages in banter with redditors, a chance to say hello to the celeb, ask and receive questions, maybe even get some answers and insights into the celeb scene.
we get the (carefully vetted) words of the celeb, they get a chance to see real time feedback for their star.
a win win thing.

Surely every state has a propaganda department, and every propaganda department focuses at least in part on social media and framing the narrative. If the narrative is framed well enough, then there's surely people that will parrot the talking points of that frame for free because it's sympathetic to their cognitive bias.
What I'm working to say is that actual shills only have to be a small amount of posters. The rest will shill based on their own beliefs being reinforced.
2 NonThinkingPeeOn 2014-07-27
If you've ever had any idea that you're thoughts and beliefs were being manipulated in anyway, and thought to yourself, they wouldn't do something like that, or they couldn't do that, They already have done it.
1 joe-6pak 2014-07-27
Consider the amount of time that mods and prolific users must spend on the site.
Ask yourself how they support themselves.
It is simple economics - the effort required to run the thing will necessitate financial support, and many of the people who can put forth that effort are funded to promote agendas.
If you are not paying for a product.... then the product is YOU.

man, if you're here you should pretty much assume that this is COINTELPRO, just like most of the "alternative media" is. that does NOT mean that there isn't a lot more truth to be found here than in the msm, but you have to know how to read between the lines.
0 trillstuff 2014-07-27
Could one please define shill for me?....Not a webster definition, I want r/conspiracy's definition.
2 danxmason 2014-07-27
In the strictest definition, a shill is someone who is paid to voice an opinion. However, we now have cheerleaders of certain policies / businesses who are so brainwashed, they do it for free.
1 TheEdes 2014-07-27
That last sentence. You're basically saying a shill is someone whose opinion you don't like.
2 danxmason 2014-07-27
Depends on the situation.

then why do ONLY the posts about shills get very downvoted ? sure, some of my comments are stupid, but those that specifically have the word "shill" are always targeted :/
1 khamul787 2014-07-27
Because its a stupid word to use, and almost unanimously false. I down vote every time I see it (unless it's substantiated, which is incredibly rare) because it's a buzzword people love to use to put down dissenters.
1 alexdrac 2014-07-27
i have never used in the context of accusing anyone of being one. i have not mentioned it out of context. just things like answering OP question "what do you think is an underestimated danger to internet freedom?"
that's what i mean. i'm not going around calling people shills and then wonder why i'm downvoted. i'm not that stupid :)
2 khamul787 2014-07-27
That's fair enough. Around here it's used regularly to dismiss dissenters, and I can't stand for that Level of BS.
1 alexdrac 2014-07-27
i believe it's the shills being shills when i see people getting called out.
they are like those masked protesters that are the first to start throwing stuff at the police. perfect strawmen
-1 [deleted] 2014-07-27

2 alexdrac 2014-07-27
but again, there is clearly a pattern where simply using that specific word triggers a lot of downvotes. and i've NEVER accused ANYONE of being a shill. this isn't what i'm talking about.
i said things like "i think shills are a greater problem to the internet as a whole than we believe it to be" or things along that line.

good suggestion. i'll have to wait for the right threads, where the mention of shills would be appropriate and i'll have to stay clear of anything involving israel, because those guys have public volunteer shilling programs at universities.. so that won't prove anything.
