Edit: it's starting to sound like something that started as a twitter hoax that a handful of people joined in on and took the streets in masks and became first world anarchists. Knocking on garages and running, calling pizza places and threatening them etc.
There are no confirmed pictures or videos up on instagram, and if this were real it would be flooded with them.

In a small amount of time, a bunch of people from reddit visit a website that isn't geared up for that amount of hits. The extra hits overload and crash the server/website. This often happens when smaller/new websites hit the front page and sometimes when websites are posted in comments. A good resource for knowing if the site is actually down is is it down for everyone or just me
I guess we view it as a hug because reddit often means no harm, it's just a lot larger than any of us realize. I'm picturing a giant teddy bear where website sizes are houses, so reddit is a bear mansion while sites that get the reddit hug of death are often cottages and smaller houses. The poor reddit bear only wants to give each occupant of the house a hug, but the house is snug on the bear and he soon gets frustrated and just busts out the roof of the house and runs away to his mom and cries and eats honey because he only wanted to hug everyone :(
