I'll eat shit for this as always, but this is such an obvious distraction. Ellen Pao suing whomever or promising "safe" discussion doesn't make a lick of difference to the site. "Safe" spaces already exist in the form of moderated subreddits. Plus, she hasn't actually done anything concrete yet, and really the damage to reddit had been done before she ever stepped in. Defaults and mass influx have filled the site with inane content, and corporate meddling can simply be done through sockpuppet astroturfing, as we've seen time and time again. It's just not cost-effective to target the leadership when reddit itself is so exploitable.

Also I think most of the rage fomented against her is misinformed, but that's really irrelevant honestly -- I just think it's pointless when the site itself has so many numerous, non-Pao-related problems.

This Ellen person seems to make no difference whatsoever in other subreddits. People continue to post whatever and nobody seems to care about her.

Why do you think that? Why is she so special? What makes you think you can persuade everyone else at Reddit except for her?

Policy is set most often from the top down. If you want a new policy, one way is to get it from a new person at the top.

There isn't any evidence that a new CEO won't pursue the same policy.

You might be right; this might be entirely her own initiative. I doubt it, but it's certainly possible. That said, it's not exactly "a requirement" that she be removed for the policy to be changed.

Why do you want the policy changed? What is it you're dying to say that you're not allowed to? What actual limits to free speech have you run into?

Typically only the board can override the CEO. So if that is the policy she favors it is required to change her opinion or remove her.

The title can (and often does) remove context, too. For example, here's the full quote, emphasis preserved:

I think that's right depending on who you're talking about? The babies are the ones who would like a censored reddit and they'll get it. You can go somewhere else, I don't care if you were here first.

Reddit already is censored, though. You can't post literal threats against people, you can't post personal information, you can't post trade secrets, code that breaks the site, and in a lot of subs you can't even advertise.

I like her, she's in the impossible position of trying to balance the wishes of the user-base with those of the shareholders. All websites sell out eventually - even Anandtech and TomsHardware have recently sold out to the same company.

She's probably the best friend we have in the boardroom, so please let's just cut her a little slack.

The shareholder invested in a website that's sole purpose is to propagate a forum whose content is completely user based. By putting the users first, shareholders will win regardless.
