That seems stupid.. why would they not put any measures in place to ensure the same shit doesn't happen again?
Anything.. something simple like a way for user's to report and vote on suspected shills. Only an voted few (rotated) will be able to confirm the likelihood of the shill and place them on a list for all to see (or give them flair).
The simple fact is that while they will try to differentiate themselves from Reddit, Voat.co will become exactly the same in the end. Recently Voat.co announced they had a financial backer. While that's wonderful news on the surface, allowing them to scale up infrastructure to meet demand; Below the surface it makes them now accountable to an outside source who can & will eventually use the threat of pulling their vast resources if information they don't want becoming public starts to trend. There will be shadow bans & outcry from users no matter where you choose to get your news as long as corporate greed can embed a gnarled claw deep inside & simply play the long game, waiting all the while to twist.
Understood. I just see a lot of flak thrown their way but I remember it was just some guy on reddit who thought it might be a fun project and now it seems to have blown up. I bet he's going through a lot of shit he never expected to, frankly I'm surprised it's gone on as long as it has.
I just want to make sure he gets his credit since I see a lot of people suggesting a reddit clone but no one ever seems to actually do it.
For a time it will be righteous & some good will come of its existence. Inevitably it will be fully compromised, same as this place is now. Users will proclaim ignorance on behalf of those in charge & mob against a single target, unaware they're battling with a hydra. I hope the short time it will provide us all with the unfiltered information we desperately need will be enough to spur real change. If not, maybe the next one will.
Or you can come to r/C_S_T where the trolls ignore us (for the most part) and you can simply flag a post as [Premise] and anyone in the thread giving you shit can be banned (either permanantly or temporarily... and TBH we've only used the hammer on a handful of users in the last 3 months).
It's by far my favorite community here (of course I'm biased), and the server issues are nil (for now)...
because the anti-sjw sentiment is much greater, in fact, it's almost central, so we're fine for a little while over there, but sure it will probably turn to shit, like everything
I came from voat.co. Yes the conspiracy community there is excellent but the whole site can be a pain in the ass at times. If Atko would get the help he needs to finish voat.co to some degree I'd go back but I'm tired of all the issues.
if no shills are around then you probably are on a dead track that power doesn't care about or actually want you there in the woods out of the real action
Yeah. Lets all go to a website that crawls to a halt when more than 15 users are online. A website that gets DDOSd every week. A website in which we know NOTHING about the owners and their motives for creating such a website.
Reddit might be gamed, but at least its a stable platform and we have some sort of transparency at who is behind it.
I want to, but I'm afraid of stumbling on child porn. I want a website to go and talk about things with random people that doesn't have anything that could get you thrown in jail if you accidentally click the wrong thing. I don't know all the rules and laws about child porn, but I'd rather not see that stuff at all. I've heard they've had problems with it on Voat so I'm staying away until they get that stuff fixed.

I love it there.
They just need better servers. FAR fewer shills and JIDF although they are there. Don't drop your guard.

So what's stopping Voat from eventually becoming just like Reddit?

Nothing. It'll just be another temporary place for discussion, but it will most likely descend to reddit levels at some point.

Shit we could something like that here even.

So if that's the case, isn't Voat.co doing more harm than good? Kicking the can further down the road?

It's one guy's attempt at providing a solution. I remember he used to post here and ask people what they want etc.
If you don't like it you should try coming up with an idea yourself and going for that. Talk is cheap, action is rare.

I'm being critical, but don't take it personally.
I'm taking my own action that doesn't involve a replacement reddit. I always welcome critical feedback and I'm sure the owner of Voat does as well.

Nothing, but it's not like reddit yet. That's the point.

Nothing. And that scares me.

I just checked out your sub. I joined. Are there any other subs that I should know about?

Depends on what you're into, of course.

Getaether is far better, although still incomplete

interesting but the work of a google head, then again it's open source, will follow
