Has Reddit sold out?

Reddit has the right to do whatever they want with their site, but for a company that once said they wanted this place to be a "bastion of free speech" and that "the founding fathers would like reddit", they seem to have changed their mind on that completely.

I wasn't a fan of CoonTown. I'll admit I agree with their core message -- that black crime is a real problem and we need to discuss it, but the over-the-topness and pure hatred was too much for me.

Anyways, reddit just banned CoonTown for no reason. In fact, CoonTown was such a model subreddit when it came to following the rules that Reddit had to change it's content policy in order for them to ban it.

The new policy being:

A community will be Quarantined on Reddit when we deem its content to be extremely offensive or upsetting to the average redditor or to ourselves.

This new policy update came after /u/Spez said he didn't agree with banning a subreddit simply because they have a different opinion or hold unpopular ideals.

They're not even hiding the fact that this site is heavily censored anymore.

yes.. voat... next

Yeah. Setup at Voat, but keep one toe in Reddit.

It can't hurt to keep fighting as this ship sinks.

thats what i do :D

Voat just Incorporated in the US. It's now Voat Inc. How is that any different than reddit? Eventually, voat will travel down the same road.

everything will eventually turn to shit! Slashdot => digg => reddit => voat => xxxx

Decentralized social media is the future.

This is exactly what usenet was a long time ago.

Usenet is definitely interesting, however, from what I've read some channels were blocked at the ISP level. To find a way around this will take some incredibly talented folks. I have ideas, but shit, some of this is beyond my level and I'm a web developer....

With usenet, you are not limited to the servers your ISP runs. There are free and paid options for accessing usenet from anywhere.

Get Aether.

ethereddit

Never heard of it, will check out

no such thing! i made it up! google ethereum though.... web3.0! the future of the web son

They better not touch our quad x porn, I'll be mighty unhappy if they SJW that.

Yep. I'm convinced it is not possible to turn a profit on a running a social community site without exploiting said community.

I liked voat because it wasn't American. Sigh, same old shit then.

That's the sad truth. I've been following it since it's creation. Was devoting time to developing an iOS app for it, for free. They decided to incorp in the US, even though the bloke is from Switzerland. Seriously, WTF. Silicon Valley VC's? Censorship. American/NSA censorship, open your butthole, there is no lube. Silly voat goat, but then again what does the goat mean? I digress.

Voat is invite-only right now.

It also moved to US so it's not safe anymore.

The astroturfing is unreal. I feel like every comment I make has some righeous corporate defender speaking in soundbytes for their side, just enough to raise a little doubt. I think often times this is accomplished because most users are unaware of this practice.

I think if this sub wants to fight the power taking over reddit, we should point out astroturfing as much as possible. The site may be too far gone, but its worth the fight.

If you say anything about it, they autoplay the tin foil hat soundbite on you (a la /r/conspiratard). But worry not, I can validate your experience as it's happened to me many many times before and we have references to these (ex: hbgary social media goons) in mainstream media so if people think it's not real then they are reality-deniers.

Defeat them with logic and truth. They end up looking like the one who is unhinged.

A sellout;

One who betrays a cause for personal advancement.

You clearly defined how you think Reddit has betrayed its cause, but for what advancement? What did it gain and from who?

coontown had a few high ranking posts on all lately, you get that high with an unsavoiry sub they have to protect thier product

please... this a money making operation. don't kid yourselves. this thread isnt going to go away as long as we up vote., cause dammit. that is what it is. up vote your neighbors. support each other. thats how you beat the problem.

Hey look at the bright side. It's still kosher to hate Muslims.

almost certainly

Reddit literally sold out to VCs a while ago buddy. This is just the natural progression.

I tend to think so ... and voat seems, now, to be "by invitation only" ...

Does anyone know how one gets "invited"?

As far as I've seen, you don't. You just register before they go invite only.

Sadly I can't remember my old voat name, and they don't do email password recovery at all.

user has to invite you.

so apparently certain sjw subs were spamming emails to reddits advertisers complaining about coontown and other subs and that's why they got shut down. check this:

We need to get away from this notion that the constitution only protects you from the government and private companies can do whatever they want to you. Private companies can't discriminate in hiring and firing you for certain criteria, for example. But the huge push to privatize everything in society away from the government into the hands of a few anational megacorps is pretty terrifying.

We had a pretty good balance before, when the government had all the power but was restrained by the constitution. But now with privatization, private anational megacorps have all the power, and the constitution doesn't protect you from them, so the constitution ends up essentially meaningless.

Antique Jetpack

They didn't "sell out" they "bought in."

Yes. Anyone have a voat invite I can have?

Uhh k

Lol, every comment made by /u/Spez is on negative within the hundreds.

Absolutely.
