I thought that modern Satanism was much more based around hedonistic practices than anything else. The Satanic Bible isn't so much a religious text as it is a treatise mocking everything that institutionalized religion stands for. Praying to Satan is like praying to Bill Maher, it won't work and he probably won't care. If you insert Lucifer in the context of what you said it would make more sense to me.
