Something fucky is going on with reddit.

214  2015-12-14 by Putin_loves_cats

Check the sidebar for how many users are here now... Dafuq is going on?

Edit: Also, I noticed my upvotes/downvotes are not being registered or saved. I upvoted someone from a frontpage post earlier and went back and it wasn't orange. There was no vote on it. I know for a fact I upvoted the comment.

Edit2: Just for archiving purposes/good measure: https://web.archive.org/web/20151215005920/https://www.reddit.com/r/conspiracy

Edit3: Reddit just went down for about an hour. This is not a DDOS, or a DB fuck up. Major re-coding is going on in the background. Just in time for January policy changes. This is coming from a web developer.

Are the bots all down? Hello real people.

Hello.

What's that suppose to mean?

A "limited hangout" would be someone kind of on the inside, but just close enough to"leak" info that they want to be made public. An example would be if Edward Snowden weren't really a good guy and just made the leaks so the public would become afraid of the NSA (not that I think it's true in these situations).

I know what it is, just not why that poster posted it to me. Was he/she implying I'm a limited hangout? That was where I was going... Just was out of context..

He Is a limited hangout lol, guy's annoying.

K

I think that it was a joke about

  • How reddit is manipulating people's actions but giving them a false sense of influence

  • How the two of you are engaging in small talk (aka hanging out)

You mean like a Panopticon? =]

Snowden is there to make us think the NSA is staffed with wholesome, good-looking, ethical geniuses. He's their cover-girl.

Beep boop beep.
Edit: just noticed there are 4 people on /r/worldnews...

Don't you mean "beep boop boop beep."

Hello everyone. Currently only 2 people. That means there is only one person besides myself on this subreddit with 348,883 subscribers.

Maybe this is reason. HA HA

And I'm still here technically

There are 5 of us here now

There's 4 now. One other figment of your imagination besides me.

no. i am the only one. i am a god. i will be bounded in a nutshell and count myself a king of infinite space were it not that i had bad dreams.

Good one!

How do I know you aren't a bot?

TIL: Reddit is just 3 real dudes and 10,000,000 bots.

Would not surprise me at all given the average level of discourse.

Same here, I went to check a link that I upvoted a few days ago and saw that a lot of what I upvoted around that time was not on my "upvoted links" tab.

Also, I'm seeing more and more of that same 4 - 7 users' posts. I wont link them but, for example, iBleeedorange, slimjones123, noerdy, loopdeloops and a few more that I see. Their posts keep showing up on MY front page, not the ALL front page, but what I choose to see on McReddit. Their posts always have so many upvotes and it's always of stupid shit that "everyone" finds awesome.

I also have been noticing lately that the comments I post always fluctuate with the number of upvote points they have. For example: Say I posted a comment and within 24 hours it will have 87 points. In some cases I'll refresh my account page and they will go either up or down upwards of 10 points....and it will do this for a few days.

Noticed the same exact thing with comment karma count. Huge fluctuations.

Same deal here.

Same deal here.

Everytime I hit refresh, numbers went up and down.

Worse when browsing on mobile, especially on Baconreader. Up/downvotes get lost when switching subs, opening posts, etc.

Yup i see loopdeloop

look how many front pagers he has in the thousands in the last few days

nigga we made it

Hey guy(s) - to the one thinking freely...

One universal conscious mind o.0. Did we win? Is the matrix over?

Singularity had been achieved.

.

I think they're repprting live accounts only, as in accounts that are currently on a given sub and have refreshed within the last x seconds, as opposed to previously reported active users within xx minutes.

No way. That discrepancy is too large. On average we have over ~300 people active here and that is conservative. No way there is only ~4 active people here and some times it drops to 1 person.

Read my comment again. We still have 300 people, but they refresh every few minutes, so that there's always 2-5 people refreshing every 5-10 seconds - which is what you're seeing.

Previously it probably added all the unique refreshes within 5-10 mintues (5 people every 10 seconds = 30 every minute = 300 every 10 minutes).

From a developer/website owner, that doesn't make sense. I see what you are getting at, but it just doesn't make sense for analytics (not how it works). Hell, there could be nodejs script which would log in real time the exact amount of people here, with no db interaction.. All real time.

Anyway, the issues have affected the /about/traffic side as well, take a look at the graphs:

I've seen that, your point?

I think that his point is that there's a perfectly logical explanation for what happened yesterday, no real conspiracy or attempt to manipulate and brainwash the American people.

Whoa. Five people?

Says 1 person for me, apparently I'm alone

1 person for me too. But you all are here. :( I'm alone, but I'm not. That's demented.

It says -3 thinking freely for me.

Same.

It says square root of -1 for me.

i's the only one here!

That's because I left

Yeah, says one for me now too.

See, we are really never alone at all.

Same. 5 for me.

So, is this like a real chatroom now? The 5 real people can get to know each other and chill?

I'd say more like a small cozy pub on a winters night.

And yet more new (and crap) submits than ever are being posted to the front page. I commented on a story the other day came back a few hours later and it was already three pages back.

348,883 subscribers but currently only 3 people. LOL

Kind of like Front page upvotes average went up to 5 and 6k overnight a few months back, chicanery at every level.

~2 thinking freely /to/ ~5 thinking freely average, unbelievable.

Yup. I suspected they were doing something in the backend. I wonder if this has anything to do with the new policy changes coming in January?

They've altered the algorithms, pray they do not alter them further.

reddit. Believe It.

Reddit is likely beta-testing some new services for the JIDF.

I wasn't able to browse reddit without a 503 error for a while. I tried clearing all my different cache settings to no avail. But then realized I could browse reddit in incognito mode without issue.

Then I started receiving "reddit is down" pages in my normal browser yet could still browse in my incognito browser. I'd assume it's something to do with the login server.

SO NOW HAVE TO SAY something that is coming to me from Freddie Mercury:

So don't become some background noise A backdrop for the girls and boys Who just don't know or just don't care And just complain when you're not there You had your time, you had the power You've yet to have your finest hour Radio - radio

Is it possible the count is for a local geographical area? The start of separate but equal internets?

Please elaborate!

Go on...

I think they are trying to get real IDs linking all internet activity to individual users and at the same time make localized scrubbing stations to monitor and scrub any unwanted information generated in the "service area"

The Admins say they figured it out but I dont think so.

https://twitter.com/redditstatus

All subs say ~3 users

The admins are lying jackbooted thugs.

They'd never do such a think. They care about the users. /s

I'm calling bullshit. They are fucking with the code for the new policy changes of selling all our information to advertisers, that will happen January 1st.

That is very possible. What do you think they are selling? They just know me by username.

They have your email

They have a throw away email address without a real name that I signed up for 10 years ago and never access.

Unless you are using some significant opsec to beowse reddit for the past few years with this account, its very naive to think you real identity is not know, especially if you email-verified your account.

For the normal not so tech person yes. For someone thats been in the business way before people could even spell "internet" is a different story.

Well technically they could have your IP and mac address. IP changes, but mac address doesn't. So if you have a history here. Your comments, your upvotes/downvotes, meta-data, etc could all be sold. The big data ad industry is enormous well connected. You'd be amazed. I'm planning on leaving before this happens.

How the hell would they have our MAC address? You claim to be a web developer yet you obviously don't know your networking.

Two lines of code, bruh:

from uuid import getnode as get_mac

mac = get_mac()

Python, which is what Reddit is built on. Would you like some php, bash, c, or any other examples?

That gets the MAC address of the server the code is running on, not the client. The only way to get the MAC address of a client is if the server and client are on the same local network.

I'd love to see you attempt to prove me wrong. Try googling it and pasting the answer from Stack Overflow again.

Wrong. If I own the server and you connect, I can get the Mac address of your device. You act like it's some sort of magic.... Look at the headers, you fool.

The MAC address isn't passed in the headers beyond the local network. There's no reason for it to be. Just admit you're wrong.

If you're a web developer as you claim, I challenge you to write a website that can grab my laptop's MAC address.

This will give you the local Mac address from the machine, not the remote Mac from a http request.

Depends on how you use it. App developer can send it, and server can retrieve it. Am I talking to middle school kids?

You're back pedaling and retracting your previous statements. You claimed reddits website could get the MAC address, and now you're talking about app developers. Quit the crap.

An interface's MAC address is removed from the packet at the next hop. It is then replaced by the MAC address of the interface on the other side of that router. The ONLY way to get the MAC address of an interface that isn't on your local network segment is to somehow execute code on the remote machine. This code would need to get the MAC address and send it back to the server. I learned this in middle school. I learned not to call people names before kindergarten.

As a network engineer I have to say that this post is completely (technically) correct. There is no possible way of discerning my MAC outside of running an exploit or being on my LAN.

I think this changes in IPv6. Isnt your mac is hardcoded as part of the full IPV6 ip addy?

Objective C, can I use the UUID (mac address) as a unique identifier? Yes or no?

Edit: thought so.. Shut the fuck up. You working for reddit?

IP changes, mac addresses

That does not bother me and I don't really see it being a problem. Google archives this site all the time and I'm sure they have been selling all that data before Reddit was. These new 2016 changes will most likely get the good people to not post as much in this sub but that wont change the hive mind on the other subs.

I missed the announcement of the January changes. Whats the main change?

Sharing user information with third parties.

Did they blog post it? Can you link me?

There used to be a link on the top right but it has gone away.

So one your one those people. Google may archive, but they don't have a cross reference from reddit of your mac address linking your username. In Jan they will now have that cross reference. Enjoy. It's a brave new world!

So one your one those people.

Not sure what that means other than you assume I don't care if they spy or collect data on me (bad assumption). My business is IT so I understand how servers and logs work. The only thing that can be sold is location of a user. If end users become smart they can block most of them from targeting.

Many things are going to be changing next year. So many things to pay attention too and the goal in to stay sane!

Your device ID (Mac Address) can be sold also. This UID never changes, as I'm sure you know. I agree, there are things we can do. I just don't like how this spider web of surveillance is growing and growing. Sorry, if I came of as a dick.

Your device ID (Mac Address) can be sold also.

Not sure of that value other then to tell what that device is if they have the hardware database handy to look up. Having a great router / firewall can help take care of most of that data to mask it if setup correctly.

Your mac address is a unique identifier of YOU. It never changes, its not just what kind of device you have, it's a ID much like a unique column in a mysql DB. If website a) records it and so does website b), and they are now allowed to "talk to each other", they can cross reference who you are based on the unique ID (and other meta-data). This is what I'm talking about. What part of IT do you work in? I'm personally a software programmer/web developer. Also, your router theory is correct, but that only applies to wifi/ethernet. It's hard as hell to protect this id, on say, a phone or tablet and the lay person will not/know how to do it.

Your MAC is absolutely not a unique id of YOU. Its at most an ID of your NIC.

Really worried? Pick up a $5 Edimax USB NIC and boom, your MAC just changed (and your Internet connection will likely be faster if you didn't have an N connection).

Please don't spread networking disinformation without letting the real engineers weigh in.

At MOST a particular computer can be identified. There is NO WAY KNOWN to link that MAC or an IP to you definitively.

Yes it is a unique identifier of the device but all that can be changed if the user is tech enough to do it. I work on the network / hardware level and also a web developer and co-location provider for our clients as a main business. Protecting oneself always comes down to money and knowledge. Jail breaking a phone can help obscure that info if needed and is done all the time.

Reddit's model is an interesting one. If minded correctly Im sure its valuable to someone with money or a need to know the pulse of the people. I'm sure government and up and coming politicians would love to buy all that data.

Absolutely. I believe we agree. This brave new world sucks (imo).

We defiantly need to know and continue to learn how to navigate it. The only problem is that there are many outside influences that are manipulating things beyond belief. That's what interests me.

Right. I really wish more people were more tech savvy and wanting to protect themselves, but as the saying goes: the masses are ignorant. As I've said before, it's a brave new world. We shall see.

MAC addresses can easily be spoofed. If you use a VPN, they won't have it. Or if you're paranoid, use Tor and reddit there.

There are multiple ways to stay relatively anonymous if you so desire.

I know how to, the masses don't. That is my point.

why are you leaving reddit then?

Wuddya mean? I'm building a new site, yea. Not sure what you are asking. Granted it's more conspiracy related....

[deleted]

Creating my own little pub. Will let others in, when it's done. See, I'm on here because of the conspiracy community, bought it. So, I'm creating an alt for this. Should be pretty chill. Small, little pub where we can all chill and spread ideas.

Things break. Clearly whatever service is reporting how many users are accessing a page has broken.

Reddit is a queue-based service. When a page is hit, its id is thrown into a big queue. The traffic service processes this queue to get metrics like "who is here now." When that service starts pooping out, it doesn't report those values and those numbers grow stale.

I doubt this is a big conspiracy, and merely a function of reddit making code changes, or other problems dragging down their services.

Being a developer, I understand this. But, I think it has to do with the new policy changes coming in January. Major re-coding going on in the back end.

But, I think it has to do with the new policy changes coming in January. Major re-coding going on in the back end.

I agree with you. As soon as I noticed the problems that was the thought that came to mind.

Yup, if I wasn't a developer myself, I'd prolly be convinced by their official explanation....

What kind of policy changes?

Seems like vote counts are fluctuating, this post alone changes from anywhere between 90-95 when I refresh...

Yup, made a video capture of it. I'm just to lazy to upload, and also do not know where to upload. I don't have a youtube channel. Shit is out of wack right now. Some reddit dev, is working overtime right now. Bless his soul, but also, fuck him/her....

Weirdly enough, I can't seem to link to my original comment, are you having the same problem?

Yup. The backend is being changed. If you know what you are looking at you can see it for what it is. Hopefully this comment doesn't just "poof" disappear.

Says 3 PEOPLE LOL

The exact same thing is happening in every subreddit, must be some sort of bug.

My theory is, they are majorly changing something in the backend. What? idk. But, being a web developer, I know a little more about this kind of stuff. Tis' odd, and we shall see.

reddit is a major website and they are rewriting some code for the policy changes it's nothing malicious there are just some kinks in the code that will be fixed.

~2 thinking freely

Hello, brother.

Hey i guess im number 2 WTF small world huh

But wait, I'm here still. I guess I'm the blacksheep of the fam...

Now its 1 weird guess we just have to wait and see wtf is going on here on reddit hopefully they are not making fake accounts under our noses what do you think?

Lol my tiny sub at /r/knownedge has as many active users as /r/conspiracy !!!

approximately five people.

?

the fucked up user count is reddit wide right now

I got the "Regularly Scheduled Maintenance " page lol

Me too! It is how Reddit controls you and ignore your input. Old news.

lol, you should try catching up with the rest of us. Everything is being monitored and influenced. You think its a coincidence that the hammer came down so heavily on Aaron, fucking co-founder of reddit. A person who clearly had much larger aspirations along the same lines of rebellion that spawned reddit. Its why I'm convinced they killed him, either by forcing his hand or actively killing him because people like Aaron do not yield to tyranny. I'm not trying to be all poetic here, but I understand Aaron's principles. Not that they were his own but he is among an ever growing minority in this country. His tragedy like most and the movement itself is primarily due to inadequately judging the power and lengths the other side will go to.

This is a war that you do not win with physical force. First you conquer and reclaim your own mind and then you awaken others. Once a critical mass of people can stand together at once, victorious in their own minds, the battle will be over. You're mind is powerful and its not just a cliche saying. You don't believe me? Why do you then possibly think so many tyrannical governments invest in hiding or obscuring truth or manipulate the perceived public opinion in small online communities? They clearly don't think its a joke... hmmm.

Anyway, just accept what is rather than fight something you can't directly change? In the mean time don't ever fool yourself into believing that every digital fingerprint you leave is logged and analyzed against known associates and your personal history. Somewhere out there there is an ID number that you are not aware of, that corresponds to you in a database which contains a more through profile of you than exists anywhere else on this planet. Your intimate history, thoughts, delusions, aspirations, it is the most detailed analysis of not only your legal person but your flesh and bone. Until now you were unaware it even existed ;)

Men, gather your dank memes kiss your porn stashes and Wear your tinfoil hat, Tonight we reddit in hell

Jet fuell can't melt steal beams

Theories? Genuinely intrigued. I have also noticed the number of online users on my usual subreddit haunts has plummeted.

Not sure. I think they are changing things on the backend (speculating). I'm wondering if it has to do with the new policy changes coming in January.

And then there was one.

I've noticed 900 people on here, thought it was strange

Hello fellow human beings

I was just looking at the Japan-Syrian refugees post in /r/news and the page disconnected randomly. Server connection failed or something. First time that has happened to me on this site. I was able to refresh and it reloaded but it was odd.

Are you all the same guy?

If they want to study the user base, which is what they said they would do in the change of policies, I imagine it would make sense to better separate the astroturfing from users, the content/agenda pushers from the normal shitposter, specially considering the newest professional astroturfing services. Reddit would want to advertise for the average shitposter.

In the last moth, Cloudfare, that filters web traffic for reddit, has been implementing changes for it's clients, like implementing HTTP/2 and other changes.

So I imagine they might have took advantage of this moment to also push a better categorization of it's user base, maybe not filtering astroturfing, but defining clearly which is which. That probably wouldn't change anything, would be for internal usage only.

I just commented on a post to which there have been 6 other comments posted, yet only one comment is visible.

Did web archive links always not work on reddit, or is that new? Because I'm getting a robots.txt error whenever I try anything.

Checking in..?

did any of you truth movement idiots figure its cuz of the debate causing extremely high traffic?

You are alone.

is..

is anyone home?

Just curious, where does /r/conspiracy hangout when reddit is offline?

I'm working on that! ;)

So my comment just completely evaporated from the thread? wow.

Happened to me a few times, same with votes. Shit is fucccccked...

voat? I mean, every sub on voat thinks everything on reddits a conspiracy so it fits pretty well

No, I'm not working with voat. I'm working on something else, for us tin foil hat wearers....

just throw an IRC instance up, or better yet, there was a chat room coded in go acessed via SSH.

I want it to be a little more educational and UX enjoyable than IRC. I think people here will like it :)

true, but hey, you can get some killer interfaces via ncurses.

while you're at it, set up an onion site, a freenet site, a zeroNet site, and host public content on IPFS.

NCURSES, hehe, I like the way you think friend.

Do you use lynx and mc? Because I do. Although most don't prefer vi over Word, likely.

I just use BASH directly to manage my files, don't even have a file manager. The most is the like save/open dialoges that come with programs like palemoon.

I personally use vim, but I do a lot of text editing via sed.

personal favorites are cmus (music player) and nmtui (wifi connection tool) ncurses GUI.

I've used lynx, but I prefer w3m as my terminal webbrowser for some reason or another.

Another, I do use curl/wget a lot (got a simple bash script as an alias that pulls the word of the day and its definition from dictionary.com)

and theres rtv as a terminal reddit viewer.

Wow, thanks for that! I write BASH script all day every day and was unfamiliar with rtv, so thank you!

Sed is so ridiculously powerful; sed and AWK can basically do anything. It's hardly easy (well, sed isn't bad) but that's why they're so much fun!

Cheers mate! I use mc to basically mass-browse unfamiliar machines really fast-unless you set a lot of aliases you will be doing a lot of cds...

http://www.computerhope.com/unix/tree.htm

http://www.tecmint.com/35-practical-examples-of-linux-find-command/

feh has a montage mode as well that works as a basic file fiewer for pictures as well.

This is great, thank you!

I find myself using which or locate more than I should when good old find does EVERYTHING and then some.

This all gets archived so if you have any other helpful links (I don't need any vi cheatsheets anymore, hehe) send them on!

BTW, running Trusty on an i7, virtualizing breezy for work under QEMU. You do any VM work? What do you prefer as a hypervisor?

Edit: weird, I forgot all about tree but had to implement it for a stress test last week! Most assuredly better than mc to blast thru an unfamiliar system in a hurry! With that and correct usage of find I can't see a need for an FM either...

Hiya

Its like they are trying to hide something... or stop it.

This is very strange...

What will the new privacy policy do?

Selling your info, like the rest of the bastards (FB,Google, etc)

I think that they're tinkering with the algorithms.

Earlier my Frontpage / rising only had about 10 posts. Usually, it's full.

I suppose that my observation could be just a symptom of the impossibly low user counts.

They are most def messing with the code on the back end. Why? Not sure. But, look into the policy updates coming in January.

The system did not register upvotes for my threads for 2-3 consecutive times.

~1 thinking freely now LOL

Edit3: Reddit just went down for about an hour. This is not a DDOS, or a DB fuck up. Major re-coding is going on in the background. Just in time for January policy changes. This is coming from a web developer.

So they want to preserve all the personal info from isers now before the massive sucking sound when so many users leave just before the policy mange...err. change goes into effect.

[deleted]

K, foog.

[deleted]

Shitty code slips by, you are obviously not a developer. Nothing is 100% and moving shit live isn't like moving a small cabinet out of a house. But, hey what do I know. I only worked on several large projects. I'm just a newbzie.

[deleted]

Great thing about the internet, you do not know who the fuck I am or who/what projects I've worked on.. Too da loo.. ;)

You're late to the party. It's been fucked for a while now.

I agree :/ guess these balloons are pointless....

WTF is going on?!?!?! Save me Reddit!

word on the street is a few good admins are working to take over reddit

Is there a way to delete your entire history? Come January I'm going to start a new less commenting character.

Total Information Awareness never went away, it's part of Full Spectrum Dominance. Reddit is one of the world's most potent public information aggregation sites. Intra-Governmental cyber-warfare experts make up most of the moderators on Reddit and Eglin Air Force Base (from which Reddit is most visited online - see recent articles noting this) is notoriously the home of the U.S. AF's 7th Special Ops division which runs a plethora of info-war and propaganda sites like Godlike Productions and others for the Brits and their international terrorism cause (the 'cause' being their World Empire which is run from the City of London square mile by the international bankers). Case in point: the day I joined Reddit they didn't see it coming, and promptly deleted the thread on which I posted my only (to this day) comment. I saw them (the mod 'Lord Rothschild' was, hilariously, one of them) speaking to each other in a thread called 'Magic Leap' on their own moderators board about it. All of this site has been corrupted and infiltrated a long time ago, and now the January policy changes are about fixing and rigging the news and entertainment at the push of a button for globalist spying and psychological operations objectives. The NSA/GCHQ axis of the British Intelligence services links to the CSS (Central Security Services) which deals with off-world topics, which will become very relevant in 2016 (hence - control of 'Disclosure' in the public battle-space). There are other aspects to it as well, but the Deep State is making its move across the axis of evil. The U.S., Israeli and British agents online will ramp up their control of the collective Western cultural psyche (manipulated via the internet) in the coming year as an attempt to avert losing their power over this world and consolidate their self-interested agreement with those enemies of mankind who are pulling the strings. The war has now truly begun.

Fuckery, is afoot.

I too noticed that. My comments weren't being saved either.

~1 thinking freely. So I'm the only person on /r/conspiracy.

Imagine that.

Frankly, I can't imagine it.
