Alternatively, gay people already feel like outcasts and thus end up more likely to peek behind the veil and learn how to ascend to the elite. There's not always something organized going on, it could just organically develop.

It actually constitutes the most conservative element of civilized society going back thousands of years when this group originated as a religious priesthood class with "special spiritual powers" that give it leverage to politically and economically dominate ordinary people. This is the origin of a classism, of social castes, slavery, of the idea that women and nature are "fallen" and lead men toward ruination.
By contrast, the most progressive and revolutionary movement in human history is the western enlightenment project with it's idea of legitimate popular government by rational well informed people in an environment free from the coercion of hidden cabals. This revolutionary type of human progress requires the free exchange of TRUTHFUL information. Anywhere you see the deliberate propagation of false information you're witnessing the betrayal of this western enlightenment ideal. This is not a trivial issue and the fate of all humanity pivots on this.
