Fb is getting creepy
98 2016-05-24 by TheUniverseIsALie
I was scrolling my newsfeed while talking to someone and at one point whatever subject or topic of conversation came up, seconds later, it popped up on my feed. This happened more than once.
WTF.

It's not just facebook. Google has been doing it for years.

Good thing I don't talk to anyone but myself... >.>

3 years free of Cuckbook. User pushback seems to be gathering steam...

Ha! I ditched Dossierbook about the same time ago. Then once you cut the cord to cable TV shit gets real. The amount of drug company advertising on prime-time TV is obscene.
Same thing happened to my wife and I like OP the other day. We were at Sonic getting some burgers when an ad for Sonic popped up on her android facebook feed as we were sitting there. It was creepy.
5 Onmytablet2 2016-05-24
I cut the cable TV cord like 10 years ago. I sometimes hang out at my sisters to visit, and they have cable. The commercials are so weird to watch. Yea, all the drug ads are weird, but also how much they insult the intelligence of the watcher. Its just surreal to see.
2 nutark 2016-05-24
The world is mental.
1 Homer_Simpson_Doh 2016-05-24
I can't stand the commercials. All of them. It's getting to the point where you are basically forced to watch super loud obnoxious ads. They need to invent adblock for TV already.
3 itrv1 2016-05-24
Leave your phone on overnight while playing a spanish radio station nearby, youll quickly get spanish ads.
1 Homer_Simpson_Doh 2016-05-24
I will have to try this!
2 fatblackcats 2016-05-24
I'm quite sure i read an article about Facebook using location based ads. So if your near a sonic, like you mentioned, then sonic ads will pop up. I always have my location services turned off. Lemme try and find the sauce though.
1 iSwearNotARobot 2016-05-24
No joke, I turn off the location setting when leaving the house.
1 JimWatsonsDildo 2016-05-24
Wow, I was browsing and got an ad from my service provider! zomg!!
1 Igypowpow 2016-05-24
For real. Now when I want to see pro trump(fascist) bull shit I just look what canstopwhitey is posting or I go to the Donald and see who Mussolini is recruiting today.

Never ever use the FB app.
18 cawclot 2016-05-24
Even if you don't care about your personal security, I wouldn't use it just for the fact their app is a huge battery hog.
4 GandalfGrey23 2016-05-24
Amen
4 robynhood123 2016-05-24
Even if you don't use the app it still happens
1 Nogoodsense 2016-05-24
how? doubt apple has given facebook.com access to the entire OS through the browser.
to be clear, the claim is that the FB app regularly listens to conversations you have while it is running (even in the background), and tailors ads and content to match whatever "is currently on your mind"
1 robynhood123 2016-05-24
Siri and possibly even using facebook just on your browser.
2 your-nuts-sir 2016-05-24
And if you do never ever say 'donkey cock cheese' within earshot of your phone.
3 SuckMyMatzahBahls 2016-05-24
That is my street name.
17 mikek3 2016-05-24
The Facebook app listens to you.
4 your-nuts-sir 2016-05-24
It most likely does but you do realise the Clinton's bought out snopes.
3 Nogoodsense 2016-05-24
source?
17 nopozpls 2016-05-24
It was "creepy" since its inception. It's literally a site for leering creeps and exhibitionists.
9 lbrodieee 2016-05-24
Once they turned it into 2 apps I was like uhhh wtf? Facebook and Facebook messenger???? Spyware5000 is more like it.
17 jarxlots 2016-05-24
Divest yourself from Facebook. It is not a service worth your time.
15 lowdowngoodfornothin 2016-05-24
Delete your facebook.
10 ZapPowerz 2016-05-24
How many fucking times do people have to be told to stop using facebook?
10 americangoyisback 2016-05-24
Two things to do: STOP watching TV (if you must, there are movies/shows on internet, and for goodness sake don't get your news from American TV!)
and
STOP using facebook. FB tracks whole society segments for research purposes - it is extremely valuable to see what they like, what they buy, their circle of "Friends" etc.
10 endprism 2016-05-24
If you weren't aware, the Facebook app on your phone, when it's open, it turns on the microphone. You are being recorded.
Also, even if you don't hit send, everything you type into the text boxes on the site, THEY RECORD IT. EVEN IF YOU DON'T HIT SEND.
Facebook is nothing less than a giant spy platform. STOP USING FACEBOOK!
9 911bodysnatchers322 2016-05-24
Spoiler: it has ALWAYS been creepy since its inception
5 Ambiguously_Ironic 2016-05-24
Spooky might be even more accurate.
5 kalirizian 2016-05-24
Actually if you read the TOS it's actually exactly in line with what they do.
12 Ambiguously_Ironic 2016-05-24
What I meant is that Facebook is likely a proxy, either directly or indirectly, for intelligence agencies like the CIA and NSA - AKA a proxy of spooks, and thus you can say the site is "spooky".
6 kalirizian 2016-05-24
Again if you read the TOS they openly sell all this information. It's not so secret that intelligence agencies need it as a proxy, the NSA has access to the main feed of all communications in and out of the US already.
2 Ambiguously_Ironic 2016-05-24
I'm not disputing you, it was just a play on words on my part.
But I do think that the majority of facebook users would be shocked and/or incredulous if you told them their facebook data was being used to create a playground for intel agents, propagandists, marketers, and social engineers (among others) - despite how obvious it is to you and I.
6 Romek_himself 2016-05-24
I stopped using facebook when i chatted with someone and talked bout a name for her character in a novel. I said something like "Shanene Corea" and like 5 min later the message popped up and got asked when i know the person "Shanene Corea" and want her as friend. Facebook filter everything
6 SugarLeafs 2016-05-24
This has happened to me. I have screenshots actually but I don't think I should post them.
Anyway my bf and I were talking about those cheddar biscuits from red lobster and while scrolling through my feed Amazon ad pops up about buying said biscuits. Freaked us both out, I de activated my Facebook. Except EVERY APP is connected through it...
6 clickity-click 2016-05-24
Lol. You're a fool for using FB.
4 materhern 2016-05-24
It scans your feed for key words in order to suggest pages and products you might like as well as people you might know. It says it in the disclaimer when you sign up and its done it since the beginning. I don't get why people seem to constantly think this is a new spy feature. Its how they make money. Its a god damn free app, how exactly do you think they make money? They push products and apps on you based on your likes which is gleaned from you freely posting everything on their searchable site. Not really creepy. Google does it too. So does yahoo. Its the same nonsense in a different format.
-7 Mr_BruceWayne 2016-05-24
Thank you! I usually can respect this sub, but the ignorant paranoia is strong in this thread. If you have a cell phone, smart or not, it's tracking you. Having the FB app doesn't change shit. If you go off the grid and live like Omish people then you probably won't be tracked quite as much. If you're going to live in the modern world, this is part of it now. Get over it and get on with your lives.
1 slim_ironwood 2016-05-24
I tend to agree, because it's not like Facebook is the only app that can eavesdrop in on you. If they want, the NSA could tap many other apps that have permission to access your microphone and the data could be collected that way.
Of course I'm all for privacy, but since so few people are really up in arms about it, we need to instead find ways to set our focus on where it needs to be, and devise ways to ensure the invasions don't affect us.
4 martunas 2016-05-24
I deleted the app and the messenger app, but i still use facebook on my browser on my mobile device. And guess what?!?! I still see adds popping up about the recent subjects i just talked about. It's not the FB app, It's your smart phone.
3 SinistralGuy 2016-05-24
Even using it on your browser will send and receive data from your phone to their servers
4 tttggg333 2016-05-24
We all know exactly what's going on. Stop logging in.

3 xtyl 2016-05-24
This has happened multiple times to me as well :/
3 redikulous 2016-05-24
Delete it. Should have done that years ago.
3 WorldWideLoser 2016-05-24
People I bump into once or twice, and may be sent one text to pop up on "People you might know." all the time, I find that weird.
3 robynhood123 2016-05-24
DUDE. The same thing happened to me. A girlfriend of mine was TALKING to me about buying an august birthstone ring for her boy friend, and showing me the rings on her phone. Not once did i open my phone or search anything during this convo. A couple days later facebook puts up ads about august birthstones...rings... I also got a couple emails for it.
Mind you it was april.
I turned siri off ever since then and started wearing tinfoil on my head and not speaking.
2 captain_teeth33 2016-05-24
I'm wondering if you fake your death on facebook, do they stop tracking and manipulating you?
6 WillieJonesJr 2016-05-24
They'll probably send someone to kill you
1 WillieJonesJr 2016-05-24
Been cable free 1 yrs. Never felt better. Been FB free 6 months. My mind feels free and uncluttered.
1 disturbed_perturbed 2016-05-24
Every few weeks I'm being asked to follow mark zuckerberg. Unsolicited. No matter how many times I refuse.
1 ki11erCarter 2016-05-24
So i just found out about facebook listening in on you and ive said it a few times out loud. After that my suggested post and advertisement is not even close to anything ive said or looked up. They know i know...
1 Homako1920 2016-05-24
No Facebook = no tinder/bumble... It's become a necessary evil :)
1 SigmaPUA_111 2016-05-24
I use it the Gentile way: 50 friends, minimal likes, and don't give 2 shits if my account is suspended or deleted.
It is Jewbook. Recognize.
1 Cerehectus 2016-05-24
Facebook, Myspace, social media in general is creepy and always has been since its inception. Spying and targeted advertising notwithstanding, it's creepy in its most basic concept, and the people who use it are morons.
1 SmedleysButler 2016-05-24
I think I saw the story on here, a guy has a conversation with a friend outdoors. His friend brings up the term Beard Oil. He had never heard of beard oil before, not ever. After the finish the conversation he goes home. Within a short period of time he gets on Facebook. First thing he is presented with is an ad for beard oil. Mind you he had never even heard the term until an hour before. He hasn't used his phone but does realize it was in his pocket during the conversation. I see all the tech firms are coming out with a version of Amazon Echo. That is obviously an attempt to get more listening devices in homes, you might have left your phone in another room, NSA problem solved. Don't worry about getting off Facebook we still got you. The real problem is Google. Literally everything you do goes through them. You can't really opt out of Google.

Same thing has happened to me on multiple occasions when using no google search , even tho my mic is turned off ( as much as can be with a smart phone these days ) .
Creeps me out on the reg.
-1 CaptainNeutral 2016-05-24
That is plausible.
-3 CantStopWhitey 2016-05-24
Mobile? Either way, it's a "feature" you can turn off. If that even works.
2 deadfulscream 2016-05-24
I have it turned off, that does nothing.
2 Nogoodsense 2016-05-24
on iOS there isn't even an option for facebook in the microphone privacy settings. We can only presume it's hardcoded in, and the permissions are allowed by Apple at the OS level.
