Services Group of America, which contracts to provide prison meals, has donated $80,000 to the campaign against legalizing marijuana in AZ. They make money off prisoners, and they spend their money making sure laws that put more people in jail for victim-less crimes remain on the books.

This activity is bribery and these Companies should be prosecuted and the officers jailed in the same prisons. let's get it done. Nice job BTW.

Not to mention, all of the churches coming out against legalization, such as the Boston archdiocese, need to lose their tax exempt status.
1 SqueeglePoof 2016-11-04
Won't they just lobby (bribe) to prevent even that?

the ROI on these campaign contributions is enormous.

It still blows my mind that this is happening. To think someone can be so greedy, so self centered to have people locked in cages over a plant that gives them relief from the stress of life. Insane

The for profit prison industry loves their guaranteed profit from tax money.

Prison guard unions love it more. They are partly responsible for California's three strikes laws and stopping other initiatives.
>The union has been one of the leading backers of tougher sentencing laws. It spent over $100,000 to pass the original Three Strikes law. It dropped another $1 million to defeat Prop 5, which would have reduced sentences for nonviolent crimes and allocated more resources to treating drug addiction. It spent over $1 million to beat Prop 66, which would have reduced the number of crimes that carry mandatory life sentences

Exactly. I never thought about this until Gary Johnson brought it up. It's not about public vs private, they all have the same goal and they all make money off of the same scheme.

Yes, they were part of it and that is why their toolie Gray Davis was voted out of office.

How about donating to a presidential candidate who promises to forgive student debts and give you free healthcare and college? How is that different?

Phoenix new times has reported the figure is actually $180,000.

Mary Junana is a proven killer that has left billions dead throughtout the long page of human history. If you losers want to get stoned thats fine, but don't pretend its 'harmless' or 'recreational', it's a killer, end of.

Thanks for your support. It's nice to know theres at least one person here who hasn't destroyed their life through excessive use of dangerous drugs.

That's the key word, excess, people don't know how to do things in moderation, personally, that's natural selection doing its job.

You won't be laughing when you're in a psych ward drooling at the walls. Dangerous illegal drugs are no joke.

How many states have private prisons? I believe there used to be 2 in NC, but they were reverted back to the state at some point.
4 illuzion25 2016-11-04
Lots and lots. Private prisons are big business. I'd look it up for you but I'm on mobile and that makes me lazy.
Short story is that capitalism enables obscene things like for profit prisons. We should be collectively ashamed.
1 philtheprince 2016-11-04
Yeah, I probably should have looked it up. I still haven't;-)
I believe in capitalism, but sometimes we have to defer to common sense a little but. I also believe in the 2nd amendment, but I don't believe that everybody should be able to walk into a store and buy a handgun the same day no questions asked.
If soembody wants to crusade to keep marijuana illegal for personal reasons, I guess that's their business. This is just wrong.
1 RuPaulver 2016-11-04
I don't agree with a lot of conspiracy talk especially around here. But these things ARE real and it IS bullshit. There's no other reason why they'd be donating.
I want money kept out of politics as much as possible. But unfortunately for these kinds of things, it's hard to get support (or opposition) for propositions without these kinds of donations behind it.
-1 bofhforever 2016-11-04
This isn't really a conspiracy it is just a corporation doing what is best for their bottom line. I think private prisons should be banned but you can't blame a company that profits off them for trying to make as much money as possible.
3 RuPaulver 2016-11-04
It's profiting off ruining peoples' lives for victimless crimes. I get that it's just a part of business to increase profits even if it hurts others, but there's certain limits and ethics that should be involved.
1 bofhforever 2016-11-04
Not defending it at all, I'm just saying it isn't a conspiracy when it is out in the open and it is the whole business of the corporation.
1 RuPaulver 2016-11-04
Well a conspiracy isn't necessarily illegal, but I doubt they'd openly say "yeah, we're opposing this bill so we can make money off putting people in prison"
-2 tylerc161 2016-11-04
Is $80k really that much for this kind of issue? What have the opposing donated?
