According to one article Facebook uses "audio to identify what is happening around the phone. The site promotes the feature as an easy way of identifying what you are listening to or watching, to make it easier and quicker to post about whatever’s going on."
According to Facebook they use microphone information to give you suggestions of what to post but not to give you targeted adds. Facebook blog post "Facebook does not use your phone’s microphone to inform ads or to change what you see in News Feed. Some recent articles have suggested that we must be listening to people’s conversations in order to show them relevant ads. This is not true. We show ads based on people’s interests and other profile information – not what you’re talking out loud about."
That's not what I'm saying. OP says Facebook is doing it, but you're talking about Pinterest. I didn't see the connection from OP's post to yours. Two different companies.
Edit: We're talking about apples and you come in talking about oranges.
Apples and oranges are both relevant when talking fruit in general.. If the topic is the intrusion of one's privacy (namely via user-granted terms and conditions of interweb sites/apps), every company that throws a red flag should be considered.
My company requires it. Whenever they give you a new laptop they give you these little blue lock stickers to put over it. In fact they hand them out like candy because they know people access work email from other devices like personal tablets so even with MDM software they encourage you to always have your camera covered.
I haven't read what their terms are but when I had the app it appeared to listen to my conversations and target me for obscure ads. I use Tinfoil for facebook now. Their app essentially loads a web browser version of fb and minimal permissions.
Pretty sure Google does i have no documented evidence i say things and i get ads for them. Im so sick of this snooping i dont want to be monitored i say crazy shit all the time how do stop these bugs?
Question 1: Why should I not watch the movie mentioned? Is it that bad? I'm not into ghosts so I wouldn't be keen but just saying that I shouldn't watch it made me interested in seeing it. Go figure.
2: Why would anyone in r/conspiracy have a know spyware installed on their phone? Please head to r/privacy and learn more.

I'm an atheist, but my Dad's a Jesus nut. When I get off the phone with him, Pinterest suddenly thinks I'm into pins about Christianity.

That's a problem with Pinterest. The post is about Facebook.

Considering that Mark Zuckerberg himself places tape over not only his webcam, but also the unused microphone port on his laptop... says something.

Webcams are typically covered on computers in government buildings as well.

What type of company is it (generally speaking) - if you don't mind me asking?
1 jasenlee 2016-11-19
A software company.

FB officially stated it does not use sound for ad choices. You can of course turn off access if you want. http://qz.com/697923/heres-how-to-stop-facebook-from-listening-to-you-on-your-phone/

You misspelled 'features'.
