Reddit is being over-written

With the new upvote system, the votes are 10x or more what they were before. This means if people go to reddit and sort by 'top of all time', they will no longer see things from the past.

Today I see the front page is littered with reposts, which will quickly fill up the 'top of all time' so all the old stuff just gets buried in to irrelevance. It's a new coat of paint, a whitewashing to make reddit more friendly for big money interests

HR 6393 passes, allowing them to censor anything they deem to be Russian propaganda. The only place covering pizzagate on reddit is now being vote manipulated, I'm scared we're going to lose the info war.

switch to voat pizzagate is there with a major presense

Already been there, and CTR is there vote manipulating, too. Already been proven in one of the threads.

But it's being actively fought, vs here it's just allowed to spread and be shitty

Ya it's definitely better there, but there is no safe haven anymore, and it's frightening to see all the sources of actual news being filtered by the people you pay to protect you.

Fucking terrifying indeed.

I'm wrongly banned from voat for calling a shill a shill it's worse than here

Can you link to the msg? I would be very surprised if this were true.

It's not, my experience is that there's a ton of shills on voat but because of how voat works they can't immediately coordinate and downvote everything together.

Can't call shills shills because that's not productive. Point out their hypocrisy, lack of true logic (lots of strawmen these days...), and singular focus. I have never heard of a vigilant anti-conspiracy theorist without an agenda.

Voat works exactly the same way as reddit, it's basically a copy-paste. So the troll techniques can just copy-paste over there too

Can't call shills shills because that's not productive.

same bs excuse as here. shills are shills and that is what is unproductive. need to boot them not protect them. now you're counted as one and blocked btw.

Hey now don't be a dick. I agree they're a problem but I don't think starting a witch hunt is productive. They are paid. They are likely highly sophisticated. They probably have a ton of accounts. Blindly calling ppl shills just divides us. Don't let them win.

really? what sub? thats the one place I thought calling out shills is ok.

prove it, they explicitly allow calling people names like shill

false

for /v/conspiracy

"Rule 1: No Spam or Memes

Rule 2: No overt attacks on people's race, religion, ethnicity, nationality, or creed"

end of rules

would be great if true

Gimme your voat username and I'll call you a shill right now

it sucks i know the new america i guess stazi everywhere til we unload these criminals

Ineffectly maybe.

What about gab and steemit? Isn't steemit going to be the best protection against both vote manipulating and censorship since it's decentralized ?

I'm on Voat, it definitely has a shill presence. It has become worse over the past half year, but is still generally more reliable.

I dont care about shills, because they are easily seen and called out. On all the wikileaks/assange subs here, for example, they have taken to just replacing the mods en masse with what I can only assume are state actors, and they just censor out and control the narratives entirely. At least on VOAT I havent seen that (yet).

Good point.

well the pizzagate has a big presense and i know one day was particularly unbearable but

Oh for sure, its the only place that seems to be discussing it. A good amount of people moved over when the subreddit was banned.

plus i love the pressense of 2000 people at any given moment

2,500 online right now!

there u go much more goin on than numbers here

good job spez!

I'm scared we're going to lose the info war.

Not to be the ultimate pessimist, but did you think we had any real chance of winning it?

It's always a back an forth. Neither side ever "wins" or else the battle would end. The battle never ends.

That's where I disagree. Ragnarök's acoming.

I think that's a fantasy to keep you from having to do anything

LOL

Shoutout to /r/startbodyweight.

The info war lol

There is no only info war

There is only an actual war. Be prepared for it

There is definitely an info war. The first casualty of war is the truth. Controlling the message is as important to war as controlling territory

The future is Blockchain-based social media everyone... Trust me

Do you have a pref yet between Steemit and Yours?

Everyone, go check these out and be ready to transfer

HR 6393 does not have censorship powers but it is a step towards that. It creates a group to report on Russian media manipulation, hacking, and terrorism etc.

Then the group can report that Russia is doing all of that and controls American conspiracy theorists, basically just repeating what the Institute of Modern Russia said in 2014, but now with an official US government stamp of approval.

Then it can recommend new censorship powers to deal with the problem by censoring anything deemed to be Russian propaganda.

exactly - and guess who gets to decide and "deem" things "propaganda"?

Why the trustworthy MSM, of course!

There is no mystery here. The MSM/establishment/left (all one coordinating entity, disgustingly) LOST the election by a landlside because they could not control the message -- in essence, the masses were presented with truth instead of their propaganda. Anyone and everyone in the establishment knows this must not be allowed to continue.

Do realise Reddit exists because this happened once before?

Reddit manipulations will eventually cross an undefined threshold and a migration will occur. Where to and what threshold is a little harder to predict.

If you read the announcement from yesterday, the admin stated that there would be jobs running over the next 4-6 days to update the vote totals to use the new algorithm. Save the concern for next week if stuff is still not updated.

Very soon (think hours, not days), we’re going to cut the scores over to be reflective of these new and updated tallies. A side effect of this is many of our seldom-recomputed listings (e.g., pretty much anything ending in /top) are going to initially display improper sorts. Please don’t panic. Those listings are computed via regular (scheduled) jobs, and as a result those pages will gradually come to reflect the new scoring over the course of the next four to six days. We expect there to be some shifting of the top/all time queues. New items will be added in the proper place in the listing, and old items will get reshuffled as the recomputes come in.

Yeah u/spez is hella trustworthy. I believe him.

Well, you can look at top posts in this subreddit. The scores got updated.

But you are missing the bigger picture.

The "top" posts of "all time" should be from the entire history on this subreddit (like they always were).

Looking at that category now and you only see posts from the last year or so. Even posts made a couple days or weeks ago are holding top slots.

The OP is completely correct. Reddit's history is being over-written.

That's because the subreddit blew up with the anti hillary stuff.

Yeah, the top scoring posts in here were already manipulated content. I'm worried about finding less upvoted content. I've already noticed content has been scrubbed when I've gone looking for certain posts through the search function.

yuuuuuup

Seems legit

Can you name a time he was caught to be lying?

When he edited comments in t_d.

That's not lying.

If you can read I sarcastically insinuated he isn't trustworthy. What is your gripe here?

So pretty much just vote inflation. 'We fudge the numbers so we need to update the sheep and convince them the numbers are real!'.

Thank you. Honestly, you'd hope that someone would do just a little bit of research before jumping to conclusions.

You can understand what he said and still realize there's vote gaming going on to hide certain topics

Sure, but then we have to trust the algorithm they are using to recalibrate. They were always fuzing votes, who is to say the new totals don't favor some posts over others? For example, keep the fph, Pao and other posts lost in the noise and make sure test post please ignore stays at the top

That's pretty interesting. I wonder how honest the conversion will still be. It could just be mostly lip-service, but we'll see

anyone got a screen of the old all time?

They literally explained, in the post where they announced this change, that they retroactively made older posts reflect their actual vote totals. It actually took them quite a bit of work.

You can go to top of all time on /r/all, or any sub, right now and see how they retroactively made this change.

And this post got over a hundred upvotes on this subreddit. This is shameful.

I see, thanks for that info. I'm trying to compare the top of /r/all to an old copy of reddit, but waybackmachine doesn't allow to show all time, only the last 24 hours. I'm trying some other things to find an old copy to compare to the new list of top posts

Don't listen to that person. He is full of it.

You can ACTUALLY go to the top of all time on r/all and any other subreddit right now and see that they have absolutey not made the change to reflect the history of reddit.

r-politics (top all time) = oldest post is 4 months

r-worldnews (top all time) = oldest post is 5 months

r-conspiracy (top all time) = oldest post is 5 months

r-all (top all time) = oldest post is 4 years ago (Obama AMA - big surprise /s) and then a bunch of very recent posts from the last year. Almost as if the Obama AMA was manually added.

That obama thing is fishy asl. They changed the algorithm so many times, I don't remember where it was on the top of /r/all though.. Pretty sure jar jar was #1 though.

It actually took them quite a bit of work.

SELECT actual_vote_totals FROM vote_tally_db WHERE thread_id = $i.

There is nothing worse than people who know nothing about your code or database insisting they know how to do your job

Nothing?

I mean, his name is /u/ProgrammingPants, so I'm sure it's a pretty pressing matter for him.

Yeah, this is ridiculous.

Please OP stop being a bundle of sticks.

What in god's name are you talking about?

You can go to top of all time on any sub right now and see all of those posts are from a year or two years ago, and multiple posts from days or weeks ago are filling slots.

Reddit has been around over a decade and the top "all time" used to reflect that history.

Since the actual vote count has been hidden for over a year, along with vote fuzzing, how can you possibly belive that the updated votes counts will be accurate and not manipulated?

Their statement means nothing when nothing can be verified by the public. Funny how your one of the most up voted users here.

I do not understand what they have changed but the upvotes are decently greatly inflated now, so they have to be messing with the numbers. I don't see how you could trust it either?

Shameful? Get ahold of yourself. If this is what meets your criteria for shameful you live a very sheltered and uninteresting life.

The people in charge seem to be trying everything to stop the public from rising up but they under estimate the power of the people. We will always find another way.

It's a back and forth thing it seems. Humanity gets mad at the powerful and pushes them back in to place and creates new rules for their relationship, which again slowly gets more corrupted as time passes. This cycle keeps happening, but the overall trend is toward improvement, I think. The real question is how much actual progress will be made this go-around, which seems to be becoming the first true global revolution thanks to the internet.

Yup. Ying and Yang!

But the difference is that the public now has more power and the minds have been unchained. These powers are trying to push the public back in the bottle before its too late.

Media is scrabbling like a lost puppy. I must say, its fun to watch them squirm.

Yes, there is a lot of scrambling and uncertainty. I hope it comes to some sort of resolution quickly because I find it uncomfortable, but I suppose I shouldn't have such a personal ego about something so abstract

ego about something so abstract

Yeah, thats one thing I don't let get in the way.

some sort of resolution

There is never a resolution. There are only zigs and zags, but the game never ends. Eternal vigilance is the price of liberty.

Pandoras Box.

i don't get it

OP thought that the new algorithm for upvoting would make all the historically "top" posts disappear.

He was unaware that all posts previous to the change have been retroactively adjusted, thus negating OP's entire concern.

Except the OP is completely right and I don't know what the hell you people are talking about.

Did you even bother checking? Obviously not.

No, you are the unaware one:

r-politics (top all time) = oldest post is 4 months

r-worldnews (top all time) = oldest post is 5 months

r-conspiracy (top all time) = oldest post is 5 months

r-all (top all time) = oldest post is 4 years ago (Obama AMA - big surprise /s) and then a bunch of very recent posts from the last year. Almost as if the Obama AMA was manually added.

lol seems like an appropriate time for op is a f@@@ot

i guess, but i don't feel comfortable using that word

i didn't mean offend it is meme on video i can show if want

lol its ok bud, i'm aware of the meme.

"OP is a faggot" is one of the oldest memes on the internet.

I don't believe that any of those upvotes are legit. How the fuck does a certain sub get 80k upvotes with less than 2000 people on at anytime..

Especially when only about 10% of viewers vote

I have seen post linking to Voat.co, I thought that was what you mean

Just the thing to play off the goldfish-level attention span of today's prime consumer demographic.

A valid conspiracy theory. They did state that the recalculation would take several days though. We will just have to wait and see. Be wary, of course, but reserve judgement for a few days.

/r/ShadowWar

I'm actually finding it rather hard to find archives of the top of all time page from the past, unfortunately

Fair point. Even using the Way Back Machine, the backups all show "Past 24 Hours" instead of "All Time", due to Reddit defaults.

Yeah exactly, and then they don't store the information for anything else on the tab of time selections because it's an API call rather than a folder in the URL... kind of annoying and I don't know if there's a way to find an old copy

Holy shit didn't think of it like that. How am I going to find the top shitposts on me_irl now?????

When they announced this change someone asked about old posts. They too will be updated, but it's going to take a week for the map reduce job to finish.

I noticed that too and found it very, very strange that this applied to locked, archived or older posts.

They really need to bring back /r/reddit as well so the community has a proper way to discuss problems with itself.

Deleting /r/reddit was one of their first steps of control.

I think reddit peaked when it broke the news of aurora shootings. Producing news faster than our overlords is not acceptable.

did that pao or ellen ever left? is she really spez? is there even a spez? or is he an avatar for corporate

I believe Reddit could have been trying to get rid of the Darth Jar Jar theory...

https://np.reddit.com/r/IAmA/top/

Top is only 50k , even the 4yr old Obama AMA is like 20th down the list even though its 216k. Fishyyy

Interesting. Compare the top now: https://www.reddit.com/r/DNCleaks/top/

to cache from October 14: https://webcache.googleusercontent.com/search?q=cache:oKRCGgaaYv0J:https://www.reddit.com/r/DNCleaks/top/%3Fsort%3Dtop%26t%3Dall+&cd=3&hl=en&ct=clnk&gl=us

Is the new system done changing scores on old posts or still going back to older ones?

While not required, you are requested to use the NP (No Participation) domain of reddit when crossposting. This helps to protect both your account, and the accounts of other users, from administrative shadowbans. The NP domain can be accessed by replacing the "www" in your reddit link with "np".

The censorship is beautiful. Fortunately we know the people at becoming more aware no matter what.

On a side topic of over-writing... There's also over-writing.

What we need is some way to create a checksum that uses post content combined with a timestamp and remote cross-linking in order to make social media tamper-evident. So if something somebody says along with the time of posting doesn't have a matching checksum, something's up.

Might make for an interesting use of pastebin, or a pastebin-like site.

As soon as I saw the announcement and what they were doing I knew exactly what it was about. They've been scrambling hard to silence certain groups without outright deleting (all of) them. This is the solution: just make everything that's "safe" for the narrative show up with 10x more votes. I think we won't see much change to the post scores in places like /r/conspiracy as we will in any of the defaults.

time to move to Voat

Aaron Swartz (one of reddit's original developers) is turning in his grave, no doubt.

No doubt. What was once a tool for communication to enable humanity, is now just a megaphone of propaganda for those invested in perpetuating the status-quo

To be fair, I heard Reddit hasn't made a profit in years

Their income is all from selling out, "native advertising" and propaganda and the like

Its easy to claim "we didn't make a profit" when you give yourself a larger and larger bonus each year from all the selling out.

"Whoops, we broke even again!"

My ass.

im new around here so excuse my naivete

blame attempted censorship of the donald for that

This means if people go to reddit and sort by 'top of all time', they will no longer see things from the past.

That's completely false.

Did you even check before you wrote this assertion?

Sad to see you putting out "fake news" here. :/

You just linked without proving anything. And you're over looking how it could target specific posts instead of everything.

And lol at see r/enoughtrumpspam near the top, that's not at all fishy seeing a hate subreddit so highly up voted.

Guess we better censor the sub; "fake news" has been declared.

You just linked without proving anything.

It's not the same things though, is my point. Some things deliberately fall through the cracks. I'm not making shit up here, just pointing out what reddit is likely to do given their history.

Someone else even made a thread about ti: https://www.reddit.com/r/conspiracy/comments/5h454u/reddit_is_absolutely_being_overwritten_right_now/

Example? It all looks above board at a glance.

Jesus christ you guys are fucking ridiculous. OP is either 14 or a hardcore republican.

dont get mad you cuck, this is the conspiracy subreddit

Do you know the definition of cuck? Using that word here makes no sense, but I can't say I expected more out of you.

yep, youre the posterboy for a cuck. Not really an accomplishment to meet the expectations of a cuck, but hey, thx

Define the word then.

Hi ctr

you're autistic

im new around here so excuse my naivete

There is definitely an info war. The first casualty of war is the truth. Controlling the message is as important to war as controlling territory

Gimme your voat username and I'll call you a shill right now
