I think of this quote specifically when people on here whine about "being distracted" and pleading for us to focus on "what really matters".

We can entertain other ideas and don't have to be bogged down by one specific scope.

Yes this. This is perfect, open your mind and think about it for a minute or two, see the angles, evidence and know your history. Amazing the world that arrives.

Unfortunately for me, having this knowledge and power to examine things openly like this, depress me. Because there doesn't appear to anything we can do about and it takes so much to convince a non theorist.

It's hard to talk to open minded people because everyone is open minded in their own way. So you always get a room full of people arguing for their point of view to gain status first and foremost, only when the status hierarchy is established can we discuss the facts.

A room full of students will always argue about the tao, a room full of masters will all agree with each other.

There's a difference between having a difference of opinion and a disbelief of fact.

Who is stating facts.

I entertain allll the thoughts... I ain't scared... I'll discuss anything... but rarely do I accept a thought wholeheartedly... But I will theorize the shit out of anything... Just call me The Advocatus Diaboli.

you've an educated mind, avocado diabolique

Sounds like a food fetish porn title.

I prefer contrarian, and I am one as well.

This is great. Thanks for sharing.

¡enadaday!

Sane people just can not entertain what the diabolical people on our planet are capable of. We can not defeat our enemy if we are not able to identify it.

The sidebar quote on /r/C_S_T.

Entertaining an idea is one thing.

Claiming you've uncovered a secret truth that contradicts all the known knowledge and physical laws in the world is another.

The former is great. Ideas are fun! Talking about them is fun!

BUT, claiming these things as absolute truth? Well, if you wanna go that route you gotta have some better evidence than grainy photoshopped pictures and a random youtuber saying its true because he says so.

The earth is flat.

[...] and hollow!

Just because I reject a thought doesn't mean I didn't entertain it.

Just say "what if?" to yourself whenever you hear something new. Then you think about it without believing it.

Most people can do this with a little practice. But it seems like they've been conditioned to believe whatever they hear if it comes from "an authoritative source".

I just commented this quote in another post lol. Glad you made a post about it :)

This is very true thought and can change your whole life by looking at everything objectively instead emotionally.

Too bad reddit is designed to help people form echo chambers like the_donald, and even on subs like this there's a lot of nonsense about telling anyone who doesn't believe in the faith to leave.

absolutely. always how i thought of it but its nice to see it in words.

I find it useful when I'm presenting a counterargument, or when I'm in a debate and have to advocate for an opinion I don't agree with.

That is everyday life when dealing with the scum in r/politics

The mark of an educated mind is being able to tell which ideas are even worth entertaining. You'll spend your entire life entertaining bullshit if you give everything an equal amount of the time of day. The whole point of thinking critically is shaving away bullshit.

Civilization 6

It's not the mark of an educated mind to believe every piece of utter bollocks you read.

Nor does it mean believing utter bollocks is a sign of intelligence.

According to this sub for example, every major event that happens is a false flag. And any post claiming so gets upvoted.

Likewise, apparently nobody even remotely associated with the conspiracy community has ever died of natural causes. And every post claiming someone dying to be a conspiracy gets upvoted.

But I'm sure the people who incessantly create and upvote those threads think that quote applies to them

Entertain, not believe.

You missed the point entirely.

Really?

In that case, tell me something this sub 'entertains' but doesn't believe.

Most of the time I see this quote mentioned, it's from someone believing some ridiculous nonsense. And they tend to quote it when they are completely incapable of defending their nonsense.

I don't understand as to why you're so against the saying. You can both entertain the idea and think about it, but not necessarily believe it whole heartedly. Me personally, I entertain the idea that Nazis dipped to Antarctica after WWII and had a base with some alien tech down there. It's fun to think about and what if scenarios, but at the end of the day, I don't believe it.

I have nothing against it. It's a great quote.

According to this sub

Let me stop you right there. There is no such consensus here on any given topic. We are a diverse group who argue about everything, and that's great.

Reality has much more fabrication than meets the eye.

Entertaining a thought doesn't mean believing...

As I said to someone else:

In that case, tell me something this sub 'entertains' but doesn't believe.

You can't group this entire sub together, that's ignorant. I entertain the hollow earth theory, but I do not believe it. I entertain ideas cause they're fun to think about but unless I have conclusive evidence of such ideas I'll never fully believe them..
