If you go by the stories, it was getting 404'd within seconds of being posted, so you make a case that someone ran a black white filter on it to fool any software that may be crawling and removing images. I'm not saying that I think this is real, but I hang around 4chan off and on and was there when this was blowing up.

I don't think there ever was an alien selfie posted, probably something else entirely and the alien story is the distraction and cover up of whatever got leaked. Are there any accounts of people saying the photo was something different entirely? This alien story just seems so ridiculous.

The most likely theory I've heard is that the alien picture itself contained "steganography" of some other information. You can encode another picture or text into a meaningless picture.
