Almost completely pointless to have a firearm on a sailboat for piracy. You're not going to outrun or outgun them, and once you provoke them they'll put bullets in one side of the cabin and out the other. If you can't avoid them, best tactic is to behave yourself and maybe have a bribe worth them taking it and leaving.
Why would they leave after being given a bribe? We're not talking about corrupt port officials, we're talking about pirates. Also, you have a fairly specific scenario in mind: a specifically overwhelming force of armed opponents. There is no set form that malefactors must take. What if it's just a pair of down-on-their-luck fishermen armed only with knives, approaching your boat out of desperation? If you have small arms on board, then you have that as an alternative to choose if the situation merits an armed response by you. If you feel overwhelmed by what confronts you, you can chose ~not~ to deploy your weapons. The point is, you have provided yourself with a choice.

Because people don't like to be left empty handed, and if the only thing of value is your boat, what do you think happens to you?
a specifically overwhelming force of armed opponents
I think we have different opinions of what "overwhelming force" means at sea.

Those types usually tent to kill you in your sleep when at anchor.

At which point you're in violation of law, as well as the fact that most nations will have their own law against it. So when your pistol gets found by an inspector (and this isn't if, it's when) you are in deep shit. How much shit? "Never see your boat again, lucky to get out of prison alive, never come back even if you wanted to" shit. All because you thought you were Dirty Harry of the sea.
p.s. I did some checking, and here's what I found:
South China Sea
The piracy/maritime crime threat is assessed as LOW.
Although there have been a number of piracy hotspots identified over the last four years in the South China Sea (such as near Ho Chi Minh City, Vietnam, near Pekan, Malaysia and in the waters around the Singapore Strait), the yachting fraternity has not been affected. Most often, pirates in this region (or to be more accurate, robbers) board the targeted vessel, steal easily-carried items, and leave without drawing the attention of the crew. Tankers in this area have also been hijacked and their cargo siphoned.

I wish you luck, but isn't the South China Sea notorious for piracy? Will you have small arms aboard to protect yourself???
