Maybe the Mayans were right about 2012 being "the end"

The world as the Aztec and Maya knew didn't end the day white people first pulled up on the beach, but that year (1519) did mark the end of the "old world" and the beginning of a "new world"/way of living/existence.

The Long Count's "zero date was set at a point in the past marking the end of the third world and the beginning of the current one, which corresponds to 11 August 3114 BC in the proleptic Gregorian calendar. This means that the fourth world reached the end of its 13th b'ak'tun, or Maya date 13.0.0.0.0, on 21 December 2012.

Maybe that actually happened back in 2012. It wasn't an apocalypse, but it was the last year of the "old world" and we won't recognize what the specific event (our equivalent of white people reaching mesoamerica) was for decades or centuries.
