What nefarious thing do you think is going to be done in 2 minutes of darkness - and why not do that thing at night, when it's dark for slightly longer than 2 minutes?

I don't think the point he was trying to make was that it's going to be dark. He's making the point that hundreds of thousands of people are going to be traveling to a specific line across the country at which locations are now well known.

Exactly, at the very least it's a huge event that thousands (millions?) of people are traveling for. It makes sense red cross is preparing for this just like EMS prepares on site at music festivals.

I sometimes wonder if they just worry about people chimping out and going crazy when it goes dark. Even small towns are expecting huge rushes of people and having 5-10x their usual population in town for that weekend and day.

That is a powderkeg of possibilities.
