That would make sense if it was the crown prince getting arrested, as opposed to people who had a lot of business ties with the US.

Right. It seems more likely the Crown Prince was involved with negotiated this with China, and Prince Al-alweed was orchestrating a coup against the Crown Prince to prevent it from happening. I could be wrong, but if I'm not it would fit with this story.
