Do they mean it as literally adopting them? Because I'll often say that my grandfather "adopted" most of my friends as family simply because of how close we all were growing up. I usually refer to my best friend as my adopted twin brother, and would be pissed if he wasn't called that in my obituary, even though he was never actually adopted by my parents. This could just be a bit of pretty prose in an obituary.

It could just be flowery language, but there are no quotes around "adoption" so I don't know if it is meant literally.

I do know that a couple of the cousins own a few "private adoption and medical records" companies and one is weirdly called Gusifer llc, (just for another coincidence,) and folks that have tried to track down adoption records have been stumped.
