Should people be weary of doing these DNA kits? What are the risks?

Leery, not weary.

or wary

Oh yeah! That was probably what OP meant! Thanks!

no risks. it's quite simple and easy. affordable too. they make great gifts for the holidays.

No risk at all for giving someone else your DNA?

why did you ask if you were already thinking that? Are you paranoid

Not paranoid just like to know all the different risks and what could go wrongs before providing personal information. I don’t know too much about the science of these saliva dna kits to know of the risks. Thought a conspiracy board would know

Ummmmmmmmmmwhy the bullying tactic?

Yeah, zero risks to giving your DNA to a company. Sure.

Research what they do with your DNA after they're done. It may be that they are selling your stuff.

It's not paranoid, its almost the same as your digital information. Unique.

No risks? You're kidding right? Let's say you trust the company that collects it (which I wish I didn't have to point out how ridiculous that is). So what do you do when that database gets hacked? Now your GENETIC code is out there to the highest bidder. Frogreddit doesn't agree with our policy so let's just take him out and replace him with a copy that we've programmed. Get the fuck outta here with that no risks garbage.

It’s our governments sneaky way of collecting people’s DNA paid for by them without any cost going to the government. But then again, I’m from the belief that hospitals should take DNA at time of birth from parents and newborn(s).

What could the government ever do with the DNA?

I guess it depends how far you want to go off the deepend.

It could be as simple as you committing a crime and leaving DNA evidence for a nice open and shut case.

Maybe the government wants to take you down and once science permits it they could plant your DNA as evidence of a crime you didnt commit.

If you go right off the deep end you might as well consider them whipping out full scale clones to replace you in general.

It's your identity! Why wouldn't you guard it?? I can't believe everyone trusts corporations and the government.. when they all FUCK you in the ass every chance they get. Stockholm syndrome I guess

Is it possible to get the DNA kids done using false information?

You can be sure that all of these companies are retaining records and sharing them. We've already seen it happen.

I know someone already asked "what does the government secretly want our DNA for" ....but does anyone have a legit answer? Besides saying they can use it to connect you to a crime? What crime? I'm not out raping or murdeing people. Are you?

That's the thing. You can be Johhny good citizen who on a bad day texts a friend something along the lines of. "Man I wish the IRS didn't take so much out of my taxes. What do they do with all my money anyway?" Big government gets ahold of that text and decides you would be better off in jail instead of poisoning the population with your "hate" speech. Takes that DNA you so kindly gave up and plants it at a crime scene. Boom. Now you're going to prison for a text. I know it sounds ridiculous but I think it's safe to assume that ridiculous are the times we live in.

I don't think people realize just how many people are saying things like that on the phone and online. It would be multi millions of people speaking that way against all forms of government.

This is less of an issue than these companies selling your DNA information without your consent. There is currently little regulation on the subject of DNA as protected private information.

My major concern would that insurance companies will use your genetic information to adjust your rates in the future. If you have a gene that makes you predisposed to a condition, they could justify higher rates. Health insurance would have some protections i imagine, but life insurance could become extremely expensive and unaffordable if they start using this info.

On the more fringe side of things, DNA info would allow a malicious power to tailor custom pathogens to target specific genotypes.

"...And advanced forms of biological warfare that can “target” specific genotypes may transform biological warfare from the realm of terror to a politically useful tool.“

https://de.scribd.com/doc/9651/Rebuilding-Americas-Defenses-PNAC

But, why would they want to target specific genotypes? These genotypes are spread all over the planet, have varying political views and are mixed with several other genotypes.

they will get enough information to design a drone to hunt your dna now and eradicate it.

Sim software. Take dna you ALREADY have and run it through a "procreation sim". Whatever dna you CAN get a hold of you use to adjust your sim code to make it more accurate. From there you can begin data points to each strand of dna you have that matches up with an actual living being. In this way you begin to predict a great deal of situations. Everything from societies reactions to shit down to who has what personality traits and what they will likely do in life given certain stressors. All it would take would be a series of super computers that gets updated from time to time.

  1. 23andme is Google

  2. The US government can legally request DNA from these companies.

That may be enough for you, but there are also these counterpoints

  1. We leave DNA everywhere we go. If a nefarious actor wanted your DNA it would not be hard.

  2. They claim they only sequence some of your DNA

  3. They claim they will destroy your DNA sample at your request.

As a counter counter point though

  1. While its posisble to get pretty much anyone's DNA if you want it bad enough, its also much easier and cheaper to harvest millions of people's DNA this way. Same as mass surveilence.

  2. You have no way of verifying what happens to your sample once it leaves your possession.

Its up to you friend, make up your own mind.

Having an extremely large sample of human DNA across across major haplogroups would enable an unprecedented level of data analysis, which would be very helpful when designing treatments to effect whole populations or specific groups.

It would also be super handy if you were a fan of eugenics or were looking for a specific type of human.

23andMe is Google, and the US government can access their data. Given how secretive and powerful these entities are, its pretty tricky to guess what they could do with such valuable data. We would be basically trying to predict the future of covert research.

Broadly its up to you if you want to donate your alleles to their secret databases in exchange for a report which only talks about a tiny portion of your DNA and often contains very little actionable insights.
