INot OP, but I'd refer anyone to his interviews from the 80s and 90s vs. now. He's been a public figure for a long time, so there are loads of them on Youtube. Even though I didn't agree with him then either, he was sharp and spoke in full sentences with a larger vocabulary. He also seemed more engaged with the interviewers and didn't jump off on tangents mid sentence. Whether it's dementia, Alzheimer's, or just common age related decline, there's a serious loss of mental faculty.
