If the moon is 238,900 miles from earth, how can consumer cameras like the Nikon p900 zoom in so close, so easily? (Not a flat Earth post, just distance) Links below:

Because the moon and it's features are giant.... seriously?

Yes, the moon is a large object. That doesn't explain the question though.

Yes... it does.... they csn zoom so "close" to the moon becsuse its so big that it looks close...

So the answer is "cause the moon is big".

Ask stupid questions, get stupid answers man. We have cool technology that can read license plates from space and we have begun to shirink it down to handheld size and point it the other direction. What do you expect?

You can't explain it other than saying that the moon is big, which is obvious. Get off your high horse and give a real explanation, if it's so stupid.

Like I said, you just asked a stupid question "how does a handheld camera zoom in on the moon". Well it's digital and optical zoom. It's created by changing the distance between the lenses on a camera. Fucking technology dude. Don't be stupid.

That's not what my question was

I know how camera zooms work, that wasn't my question.

"How can consumer cameras zoom in so close"

It was you're question. You're obviously looking for a confirmation of whatever bias you have. Would you be happy if I said the moon is actually just a large satellite and much closer than the government tells us? Yeah. This is like talking to a wall. Tell your parents you're sorry for being a pain in the ass.

LOL

You took a portion of my question and are pretending it was all I said. Nice! Still no answer to my actual question.

Genius guy you are for recognizing the moon is big.

Learn how to read

I think you need to learn how to do basic math kek

K, tell us all this simple math that explains my question, Einstein

Do you know how telescopes work or

Yes I do. My question wasn't how they work.

Are you sure you do? If you did, you wouldnt be asking conspiracy reddit why a zoom on a camera can see large features on the moon

My question wasn't "how do zooms work".

Your question was, "why can cameras zoom in on the moon so easily",and the answer is in the basics of telescopes/optics lol , im sorry you can't connect the two in your brain

Can you explain this simple math, so we can lay the subject to rest?

And because you unable to express yourself correctly, what you meant to ask was "how can we prove the Earth is as far away as it is" there are a lot of ways but one is because we can literally bounce signals off of it given the right equipment.

I know you aren't going to believe any of it anyway because you choose not to so good luck

Give an explanation for why a large object can't be zoomed in on! All you're saying is, "It's far away!"

you need more explanation? is their a problem with that explanation? you havent said why its unacceptable as an explanation other than it seems you wont accept it

If you're satisfied with the answer "because the moon is big", that's your own deal.

lol yes. Just like an elephant looks big through binoculars.

Elephants aren't 238,900 miles away

It's the same concept. An ant is tiny but looks big under a magnifying glass. A 500$ camera has a decent bit of technology in it to make it good at being a camera... And part of that is the zoom

Great, but that doesn't prove the moon is 238,900 miles from earth and that the Nikon p900 is capable of that range.

If you're trying to prove the distance between the moon and earth, then there are much better ways to do that other than debating the zoom quality of a hobby camera.

I suppose it should be easy to answer then? (Without the answer being "the moon is big" and "zoom lenses") which isn't my question at all.

The answer is yes, the moon is 238,900 miles away.

Elephants aren't 2000 miles in radius.

You don't get how scales work do you?

Still waiting on your explanation. Saying "because the moon is big" is as stupid as you think my question is.

Actually it's the perfect answer to your assertion which is just saying, "it's far away"

So, no real answer nice.

You have no real question.

This has to be a troll

I'm going to guess he's stoned.

You're the worst kind of idiot.

Great explanation!

Yes it does lmao

Explain

Nah, whatchu talking about, It's the size on one 16" Deep Dish Triple Pep Pizza.

Fuck now I'm hungry

show me the other side!

That's where the alien skyscrapers are packed in like Tokyo.

“83x optical zoom/166x Dynamic Fine Zoom super telephoto NIKKOR lens” from specs. Anyone familiar with photography will know how using telephoto compresses depth/perspective. This combined with the size of the moon will get you there.

Consider, for reference, that the typical lenses used for sports photography are around the 300mm range. In 35mm photography terminology, this is less than 10x.

It doesn't explain my question, Jesus Christ.

I don’t think you’ve articulated exactly what you’re looking for, then. 166x is the equivalent of a 5,800+ mm telescope or lens. That’s enough to get the pictures you’re questioning.

Yes, that's a nice zoom but it doesn't program that the moon is 238,900 miles away.

I’m not gonna do the legwork for you, but there are several online calculators you can use for that. A quick search will get you there.

Another thing you must consider is that most of the images are probably cropped for a more dramatic view. I mention this to clarify that just because an object is filling up the frame in the uploaded photos, it doesn’t mean the object itself is that closely zoomed to fill the frame of what the camera saw.

Also understand that zooms work by compressing the perceived depth of view. The higher you get in the telephoto range, the more that depth is compressed. According to the wiki page the moon is about 3,500km in diameter. This is huge and a ~5.5k mm lens in 35mm format terms should be plenty enough for that.

I’m not trying to prove that the moon is the distance stated. I’m trying to provide enough data so that you can check for yourself.

Then what is your question?

It's in the post title...

They're good lenses.

The moon is about the size of a quarter at arms length with the naked eye. If you zoom 83x in on a quarter from 3 feet would you get the same magnification as shown in the moon videos? (Is that your basic question reworded?)

Why is everyone explaining how telescopes and zoom works? That's not what the question is.

Because you literally asked "why can cameras zoom in on the moon so easily" lmao

That was part of the question, if you want to take it out of context sure.

No that's the question you asked, look at your thread title

That's part of the question, not the entire question. You chose to pick part of it and put it in quotation.

No, it's all you asked. I didn't pick apart anything kek

Uea you literally asked one question and its been answered. Just be cool with it.

One thing that doesn't make perfect sense to me is the perspective of seeing earth from the moon. I'm not talking about the angular size or anything but I think it should generally appear larger than it does in the majority of photographs

It's like I tell girls when I take dick pics, there is camera shrinkage. :(

You ever look at a big view, say of a valley surrounded by mountains, and the mountains seem giant, then you take a picture and the mountains are just a thin strip in the middle of the photo?

The moon seems bigger in real life because your brain is focusing on it and ignoring the surrounding view, in a way cameras don't.

Same would be true of a photograph of the earth from the moon

Lunar laser ranging experiment. Look it up.

Do you believe that humans can beam lasers to the moon?

Remember everyone, OP is allowed to vote.

And buy a gun.

Fortunately there are also highly intelligent men dressed up in costumes who waive guns and initiate violence while brandishing scribblings made by other men in robes and who keep us all safe

And a chainsaw aswell

And flu vaccines. There is hope!

Fortunately there are the intellectual snobs to act as counterbalance

Remember everyone, OP is allowed to vote.

Which should be all the evidence you need to know that voting is a sham, given to the masses to placate them, to make them think they actually have a say in how the world is run.

the earth is fucking round

Is it spinning?

I'm going to guess he's stoned.
