People respected Hawking in a way they won't with the newcomers on the screens. He was spoon fed to the populace in a time when the world seemed our oyster. We accepted him, for his achievements given to him by THEIR institutions, again.. generally speaking people trusted them, then. I doubt the science they teach. Not due to a deity, but due to their being untrustworthy, money being involved as well as parasitic agendas. There is science being done, however, we never hear about it. Their advances are their own, or rather, our advances and hard work are theirs. if you asked, "why?" my guess is they would answer haughtily, "bc."
