In the old medieval system of scholastic argumentation, there was a role called a "devil's advocate". When the argument had to have a side which nobody wanted to defend, they would appoint such an advocate who then had to argue in favor of a position they did not themselves support.

I think I can be a devil's advocate for TMOR, especially because I know absolutely nothing about them, except they bother people here in r/conspiracy. I probably do that too, from the inside.

So I will make a start. Conspiracy theory is an unintelligent stance. There are literally millions of intelligent people, mostly academic, who can basically prove how intelligent they are by the difficult degrees they have, or their accomplishments, or just the measurement of their IQ. Now, IF conspiracy theory, in general or in specific terms, had any considerable truth value, then it stands to reason that these millions of our top scientists, philosophers, psychologists, engineers, and professionals in business, law, and medicine would collectively digest the implications, and they would all cry foul.

The fact that they do not and have not done that deed, speaks to the relative low intelligence of the vast majority of conspiracy theorists. They are easily convinced of outrageous and malicious spoofs because, unlike the "high intelligent class" they do not have the logical, rational, literary, and historical scope to judge between reality and fantasy.

I'll stop there and see if you want to continue.

If you cannot win the greater debate, it doesn't matter if you win the lesser debate, by default or by argumentation. If my charge is uncontested then they could feel justified acting as saboteurs.

Just to true up this failed experiment, here is how I would argue against my own proposition.

First, intelligence is only one trait in an overall personality each one has. It helps in some matters and does not in others. For instance, intelligence does not make it easier to judge someone else's thoughts and conditions of existence - it may actually make one worse at it.

It was clear to the framers of the Constitution that - with notable exceptions - all men deserved an equal vote, indicating that they truly believed that each individual had that much worth no matter what their native "IQ" may have been. The even older traditions of trial by jury n the English system also gives weight to this observation.

Now when it comes to conspiracy, in the US especially (not to forget the entire arc of the Enlightenment) , I think the framers of the Constitution, the Revolutionary generation, can be said to have been quite intelligent, undoubtedly brave, and also conspiracy theorists in their own right (about the intentions of European kingdoms, for one). If they did not think mere intelligence was some kind of "voting weight", why should we today? Therefore it would be wrong and misguided to value only opinions of ultra-intelligent users on this sub, or in this Republic, and not treat all equally.

Second, it is not at all certain what that weight of voting the other side wants to attribute to intelligence, would show any difference as to whether conspiracies are indeed possible and/or actual. Having noticed that there is great dispute between which conspiracies merit attention, and it might be that those divisions do or do not track along the problematic of "high intelligence" any more or less than with the general public.

You and I probably do not walk into our workplace and announce to everyone what you think about Reptilians. Neither would the professional and academic people. It turns out that the nature of conspiracy means few discuss it unless they can at least pretend anonymity, or to be in a small close-knit company of trusted others. This is why pollsters don't really work. They only get "UpVotes" from the people who are not afraid that just upvoting something may implicate them (on reddit or in the voting booth).

So not only can we not accurately count and assess what the "most intelligent" people actually think about conspiracy theories, we do not have good grounds for even caring about it.

You make a good point. There is a huge focus on them, in the end all the trains go to the same station so perhaps mods of conspiracy are mods in TMOR and others.

I spend very little time reading TMOR, but I think the point of that subreddit is pointing out some of the absolute batshit insane things that get posted over here. Also currently pointing out how we have a giant multi-State conspiracy right now that because a lot of conspiracies theory types are right-wingers, almost no time is spent analyzing the Trump-Russia connection. You guys are letting your personal politics get in the way of a great conspiracy.

Also yeah the people that post stuff about crisis actors and other nonsense really need the ban hammer. Those nutters make the rest of you look like fools.
