They've removed their humanity so they can "think" within the false reality created by The Party, and they're convinced we need to become retarded robots too.
They are just insecure IRL losers who participate in TMOR and other subs of its ilk as a form of escapism from their ineffectual, irrelevant lives. Their participation provides them with a brief respite from their hopelessly neurotic, depressions and insecurities. Furthermore, I'd wager dollars to donuts that many are on psych meds.
Statistically, usage of such meds are already prevalent amongst millenials, but based on their behaviors I feel confident that they are outliers.
