Pornhub is owned by Mindgeek (previously know as Manwin). Mindgeek appears to own the vast majority of porn content on the web. According to disgruntled producers, Manwin achieved it's monopoly by stealing their productions and then releasing them for free, either on the pirate sites or central tube sites like Pornhub (think back to when porn started showing up for free on the tube sites en mass). Subsequently the porn providers lost large amounts of income as many of their customers were now accessing their material for free, at which point Manwin then proceeded to buy them out whilst they were vulnerable.

Similar to Facebook's story, Manwin benefited from an unusually large sum of money being invested early on before the company had proven itself.
