Voat Shutdown
5 2018-04-20 by ramagam
Recently someone on voat had started a clone site due to what they considered increased regulation, robo trolling, etc. - the site had a similar interface and was announced in the voat conspiracy thread.
Does anyone recall the name of the site orcan provide a link? I actually subscribed to the new forum, but i can't remember its name or anything, nor did i save any links. Cant find any of the confirmation communication either (weird).
Anyway, i was hoping someone could help. Thanks, cheers.

Voat shitty as it may be, I've been looking at it via: https://preview.voat.co
Otherwise, I don't know. Their piece o'shite website may be a goner.
1 ericthemidget_ 2018-04-20
What are u talking about
1 iemploreyou 2018-04-20
And nothing of value was lost.
1 TwoMomsNoDads 2018-04-20
Eh, I appreciated Voat. But I'm the kind of person who will read the book I'm most discouraged from reading, just to see what its all about.
1 iemploreyou 2018-04-20
It was an absolute shithole of lazy boring racism.
1 pby1000 2018-04-20
And reddit is not?
1 Tookmyprawns 2018-04-20
No.
1 iemploreyou 2018-04-20
Not the subs I usually go to. The whole of voat was a dump.
1 seeking101 2018-04-20
I think you're just upset that it wasnt a safe enough space for you
1 iemploreyou 2018-04-20
Not at all. I'm not offended by naughty words. But when almost every post is just being racist it got old fast.
1 seeking101 2018-04-20
I've never seen racism while browsing voat, so i wonder if it was just the subs you were looking at then
1 iemploreyou 2018-04-20
You've got to be kidding me.
1 seeking101 2018-04-20
I'm not though
1 CosmicOwly 2018-04-20
The several times I tried to browse the top posts were either unintelligent racist posts or alt right propaganda
1 seeking101 2018-04-20
alt right propaganda like what?
1 anothername787 2018-04-20
Is this.. a joke? The first people to migrate were literally racists, fat haters and pedophiles. I was right there waving goodbye to them when it happened. It's been rampant with racism since it's inception.
1 marywasalizard 2018-04-20
anti-pedophiles.
One of the subs that was shut down (neofag) was trying to out a computer games forum for shitty moderation and heavy CP sharing. It took almost two years after the sub was banned for Neogaf to taste victory; One of the biggest arseholes on the forum and an ex mod was convicted of lots of CP, some real sick shit.
Soon after that a lot of people left, mysteriously. Most mods asked for a ban and then the sites owner was charged with sexual assault.
Fatpeoplehate was a joke forum poking fun at fat people. If you don't people to poke fun at you for being fat, don't be fat!
1 anothername787 2018-04-20
Did you miss all the child porn that was posted everywhere? The jailbait sub? It was all very much out in the open.
1 seeking101 2018-04-20
I never knew those subs even existed there, so back to my first comment. Seems like it was the subs you were going to, not the site as a whole
1 anothername787 2018-04-20
Apparently you've never been to the front page of voat...
1 pby1000 2018-04-20
Well, they do have free speech there, which is nice.
1 TwoMomsNoDads 2018-04-20
There existed lazy boring racism, yes. There also existed well researched and historically interesting racism.
Example. Nazi is an ethnic slur. Its a play on Ignatz, a popular name for a "simple, clumsy, fool" from the farms of Austria/Germany. Opponents of Germanic National Socialism used it as a derisive abbreviation for their members. Its word play on the pronunciation of 'National'
I find that interesting. Nazi is one of the most used words on reddit and I've never seen it mentioned as an ethnic slur. Wonder why?
1 iemploreyou 2018-04-20
ELL OH ELL
Please.
1 TwoMomsNoDads 2018-04-20
^ This is why I often find Voat more interesting than Reddit.
1 iemploreyou 2018-04-20
Not anymore
1 TwoMomsNoDads 2018-04-20
Whatever internet site has less people like you making these kinds of comments is where I want to be. You are uninteresting and annoying. C ya.
1 iemploreyou 2018-04-20
Eat my arse.
1 nolivesmatterCthulhu 2018-04-20
The person you are replying to is what has made reddit such shit because people like that seem to be the majority of default subs
1 ericthemidget_ 2018-04-20
Nice response, btw it’s ok to close your mouth when you breath
1 Northernrebel56 2018-04-20
Because it's only used when a liberal or antifa type is losing an argument!
1 ericthemidget_ 2018-04-20
There was a great collection of pedo reserarch that was done
1 iemploreyou 2018-04-20
Uh huh.
1 Tookmyprawns 2018-04-20
There was CP there. And pedos.
1 ericthemidget_ 2018-04-20
There was research on Dutrox, Franklin cover up, Michael Aquino and the Temple of Set, Jewish Mysticism (Lilliths Cave) and so on... but keep with the shit comments and bullshit remarks. You sound very well informed.
1 Tookmyprawns 2018-04-20
And there was tons of underage girls ("no age restrictions") communities too. I am informed enough to know that.
1 stylebros 2018-04-20
Last time i visited their front page it was holocaust denailism, race realism, anti feminism, and throwing democrats from helicopters threads.
I wonder if their content didn't invite any funding?
1 Oftowerbroleaning 2018-04-20
/r/politicalhumor had a meme reach the front page laughing at how some of the victims of the Florida school shooting were conservatives..... So there's that
1 stylebros 2018-04-20
then mods step in and likely removes the post so that reddit semi appears advertiser and public friendly.
I visit one of the unscenored reddit sites and almost 50% of all front page items get culled and removed.
1 Bugeguts 2018-04-20

Wait why the hell was voat shut down?
1 llluvli 2018-04-20
Servers cost money.
1 trevmon 2018-04-20
like 30 bucks a month not much, real reason is they were forced to shut down
1 llluvli 2018-04-20

They failed to update their canary notice.
1 killerbake 2018-04-20
What!? I’d like to see the dedicated servers they used with CDN delivery for like $30 a month.
That’s the funniest thing I probably ever read here.
1 ATX_gardener 2018-04-20
more like 30,000 per month
1 rood2003 2018-04-20
In May they said their server bill was approx 6,000$ per month.
1 StopHAARPingOnMe 2018-04-20
I'm a web developer where can I get these 30 dollar a month servers.
You can get a droplet for 30 bucks that's like a gig of ram and one cpu. That's not enough to run a site with more than 20 or so concurrent users.
1 killerbake 2018-04-20
No shit? /r/Whooosh
He implied voat was on a $30 server. You can go get a nice dedibox from soyoustart for that price and get real hardware not cloud crap. Not run a entire social network.
1 DeathMentaL 2018-04-20
Could use expandable cloud storage and a lot of cache to offset the cost. Could be manageable for around $500/1000 a month from my experience.
1 BayAreaFlyer 2018-04-20
Bro, they aren't using Godaddy hosting a Wordpress site for a local restaurant.
1 rood2003 2018-04-20
Umm is this the real reason? Seemed like finances had been worked out a while back.
1 RedYagoda 2018-04-20
We haven't heard from Putt, so yea this guy is just talking out his ass. Nobody knows why yet.
1 jubway 2018-04-20
Probably more likely due to FOSTA and dwindling protections from section 230 of the Communications Decency act. Voat could be held responsible for the trash posted on the site, so it's easier to shutdown than clean up.
1 rood2003 2018-04-20
Too bad. Looks like serious campaign in last couple months to shut down platforms that allow anonymous / unfiltered speech.
Kind of eerie almost dystopian if this trend continues ... :/
1 RedYagoda 2018-04-20
Totally dystopian. We are already to that point. They are cracking down hard on wrongthink, just imagine what it will be like in the future.
1 katarine- 2018-04-20
What future?
1 RedYagoda 2018-04-20
The future where we are all genderless androids without opinions or souls. If they win, that is. I haven't given up hope yet.
1 fridaymonkeyk 2018-04-20
shitty future 2.0 featuring all your 'favorite' websites like GOOGLE/BING/AMAZON & FACEBOOK and that's mostly it!!!!!!!
1 workwork_workwork 2018-04-20
You are free to host your own Reddit clone on your own servers. You could post anything you wanted, ban anyone you wanted, Reddit the way you want it. I say go for it.
1 rood2003 2018-04-20
Except I don’t think it works that way anymore..... unless maybe hosted overseas somewhere .
1 workwork_workwork 2018-04-20
?? We can't create any new websites anymore? What else is stopping you? Are you trying to get at the change in the law that allowed the take down of backpage? No problems if you aren't hosting human trafficking stuff.
1 rood2003 2018-04-20
I think sites in general that allowed anonymous users to post are in trouble. Just my two cents ... I predict Reddit requires a email or phone address for new accounts in less than 12 months. The new Reddit will be more social / profile based and more curated. Just my hunch.
1 workwork_workwork 2018-04-20
agreed, but a also believe that if you can't stand behind what you say you shouldn't be hiding on "anonymous" websites. At least should be able to form an account history (how ever long it is) so others can decide if your ideas have merit before given the same weight as others.
I think that is why Reddit works. If more subs would enforce account history/age/vetting process many subreddits would go from unreadable to good (/r/con at least requires a 2 month old account but could be stricter).
1 wile_e_chicken 2018-04-20
Not a chance. No announcement, no warning, no begging for cash, just poof!
1 zhanli 2018-04-20
Could it have been shut down, solely for the purpose of seeing what effect it has on the conspiracy culture/truth movement?
Perhaps to make us feel even more persecuted? Most of Voat is full of hardcore-Trump lovers and MAGAtards, who trust the shit "Q" says.
Perhaps now that their forum is shut down, they will grasp onto their beliefs even harder, further solidifying this partisan divide within the conspiracy community/Truth movement?
1 ChipperyDoo 2018-04-20
The did announce it. They begged for cash a while ago, got some, nothing regular. Just wasn't good.
1 destraht 2018-04-20
The based their tech on the Microsoft platform. That is needlessly expensive as hell. I always had my doubts and I largely concluded that they were doomed to fail.
1 ChipperyDoo 2018-04-20
It would be like a small startup deciding to use heroku instead of self hosting or doing something a million times cheaper like digitalocean. But that also requires more technical knowledge I don't believe he ever possessed.
1 destraht 2018-04-20
Working out how to pay M$ every time I spin up a server is the horror of waking nightmares! Someone should have told them "Don't even bother" but that wasn't going to be me (and after the fact would they have even listened - doubt it). Honestly though the skill cap isn't all that high for the last 6-8+ years to get a LAMP stack going. Gosh you know, this is the conspiracy sub so I have to throw out that it almost seems like someone set up a platform that was designed to fail and to amalgamate competitive energies together. TOTAL WASTE OF TIME. Well it was even worse than a waste of time actually. I can imagine that at first they just didn't know but how could they have not noticed by year three "Holy fuck we're getting killed on licensing fees!!!". So they just plowed forward paying through their nose??? Then they paid and paid and paid again....
1 ChipperyDoo 2018-04-20
Reddit could easily be re-written in React and use a rails api backend with a postgresql server and not only get a live version of rails but also would have lower costs.
1 01314150 2018-04-20
They would have warned in advance. This was too abrupt. Silent takedown and secrecy. Possibly intimidation for hosting pgate.

With voat down, it's tough to point to it. Basically, it is a private company that specializes in kidnapping people who want a kidnap and torture experience.

There's a documentary on Netflix about super extreme haunted houses and Mckamey manor is one of the featured houses. The guy who runs it seems like a total scumbag. While other houses have safewords that will absolutely halt all activity if a participant feels unsafe, Mckamey manor has no such safewords. They asked the owner/operator if he has or would ever go through his own attraction and he said "no, never." because he has "common sense".
I can't recall what the doc was called but it was pretty good.
1 Correctthereddit 2018-04-20
Looks like it's McKamey, not McKinley. (though still MK.)
1 whacko_jacko 2018-04-20
In case anyone here follows this stuff, it's worth pointing out that Q said the dark web video rumor is fake. Whatever video Q has been referring to, it's not out there (according to Q).
1 DontTreadOnMe16 2018-04-20
Put out your own fake rumors of a video and discredit it, so that when a real video does come out, people will already assume it is also bull shit...

1 Tookmyprawns 2018-04-20
Non existent video caused this. Damn the alt right can't survive its own imaginary videos. Sad.
1 ericthemidget_ 2018-04-20
Yeah like it isn’t obvious that it was that. Additionally all kinds of shills are coming out with this “didn’t pay their bill” theory which is complete horseshit
1 holysweetbabyjesus 2018-04-20
Why? How did they pay for hosting and bandwidth? Nobody is going to invest, no matter how popular they get. Nobody is going to advertise there.
1 ericthemidget_ 2018-04-20
Huh? They paid with money just like every other website. What are u saying?
1 holysweetbabyjesus 2018-04-20

1 dreammanalishi 2018-04-20
But the picture being projected onto the wall at Comet Ping Pong is curious. Whether or not it is Hillary or Huma, the fact that the picture was taken at Comet and projected onto the wall at Comet is very curious.

Here you are once again ridiculing people and name calling. I called you out last night after looking at your comment history and you were smart enough to delete your comment afterwards.
All you ever do is name call and derail conversations in this sub. I hope everyone starts to look at comment histories because you literally add nothing of substance to a discussion.
1 Tookmyprawns 2018-04-20
Wait let me get this straight:
You're worried about voat people feeling ridiculed and name called???
Oh my fucking god that's really precious.
Btw: Who did I name call? One. How did I derail the conversation? Someone brought up a non existent video. Called out that person. Get triggered, LosJones. Or how about backing up the claim about the video? No? Can't? Then deal with the fact that the video comment is nonsense.

Sounds like Microsoft Azure is killing them on the rates due to the high volume of usage. It cheaper in the beginning but in the long run you will get fucked. 1 ramagam 2018-04-20
I've never heard of steemit - thanks for the suggestion, I will check it out.
1 PrincessIceheart 2018-04-20
Steemit is great and I encourage you to sign up, just know that it takes 2-3 weeks to get an email with your log in details because they have to add you to the blockchain or something more technical than I can understand.
1 Green_Lives_Matter 2018-04-20
The problem with these clones is that they don't offer anything new, other than an escape from Advance/Big media ownership. Even still, they are prone to the same problem of power users and shills.
The only real way to preserve free speech is some kind of block chain system, but even then a fully open platform is going to be attacked with racism and CP. There will never be a way to get rid of shills except through the ability to expose them.
1 murphy212 2018-04-20
This is a very dangerous proposition. This is also the central planners' intention; try to de-anonymize the Internet. It is not a mystery why André Kudelski has become so prominent at Bilderberg these past few years.
We will get rid of the shills when the shills don't matter anymore; when their impact is nil. For that everyone needs to think for themselves. Shills favor in the long run the emergence of truth, as it helps build skepticism and intellectual independence.
1 Green_Lives_Matter 2018-04-20
I didn't mean expose their individual identities, but rather their agenda. Once truth gets exposure, it shines light on false narratives.

1 SirFoxx 2018-04-20
Filled with Russians and White Supremacists.
And nothing was lost.
1 stylebros 2018-04-20
not even russians, just white supremacists mostly. their front page was filled with race realism memes, refugee jihad memes, and jewish merchant memes.
1 QAnontifa 2018-04-20
So it's like the bitchute of reddit.
1 stylebros 2018-04-20
pretty much. even pizzagate related stuff gets burried by the other garbage.
1 JamesVanDaFreek 2018-04-20
Wait, wasn't /pol/ doing that already?
1 stylebros 2018-04-20
every day. just pol threads fall off into the abyss until a new one starts while the reddit clone system goes into an archive and is google searchable.
1 Schizzlol 2018-04-20
Boards are archived on multiple sites.
1 Oftowerbroleaning 2018-04-20
Oh no! Naughty memes! Better just ignore the first amendment if that's the case.
1 stylebros 2018-04-20
the government isnt shutting them down. capitalism and free market is.
1 Oftowerbroleaning 2018-04-20
What difference does it make if corporations or the government is doing the censorship? It's still dangerous and it has the same end result.
1 Solution-seeker 2018-04-20
Because you made a first amendment argument yeh dingus, of course it matters who is doing the censorship
1 QAnontifa 2018-04-20
So companies should be forced to carry content they don't want to carry?
Sounds pretty fascist Tbqh.
1 Oftowerbroleaning 2018-04-20
Yes. They absolutely should. Our founding fathers would have included this if they could have forseen it.
1 txstoploss 2018-04-20
Oh, like the [fairness doctrine])(https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/FCC_fairness_doctrine)!
1 BigPharmaSucks 2018-04-20
Cronie capitalism is what we have. We don't have a free market.
1 hikikomoriyume 2018-04-20
"Race realism memes"
Shlomo I can pick up your hand rubbing with my reticular activator, get the fuck outta here you're not fooling anyone.
1 Wizard419 2018-04-20
New one to me, sounds like some kind of made up thought crime.
1 TakeDaBait 2018-04-20
It's not really new. It's a term that racists use to avoid using the term "racist".
1 Wizard419 2018-04-20
But when do we call the thought police on racism?? Can we start a war on racism yet?
1 CosmicOwly 2018-04-20
Seriously, I tried to go there but it was a race baiting shit hole.
1 SaxonWitch 2018-04-20
People like you two that just paint everyone with the same brush, regardless of people who are none of the above are part of the fascist problem all of us face who want to be able to voice our concerns without being shut down with insults and made up reasons. If you didn't like it, don't go there.
It is literally tyranny to close Voat down and then having people like you spread nasty lies. Yes there are some idiots on Voat but not all of us are and THAT's the truth.
1 workwork_workwork 2018-04-20
When the front page is full of race baiting headlines and memes, they had to be voted there by someone. If the users upvote trash like that, why should anyone peak any closer than that? I may be judging a book by it's cover, but when the first page screams hate based on nothing other than color I personally won't bother looking any deeper. Of course all groups have their shitheads but most groups try to silence them, not give them a microphone.
1 K-Vox 2018-04-20
Taken out of context, I would have assumed you were talking about /r/all.
1 workwork_workwork 2018-04-20
I browse often no logged in, and it is nothing close to what voat was. Right now, I see nothing racist on /all's first page. The "worst" I see is a /r/whitepeopletwitter post that is more funny and racist (and it really isn't funny).
1 SaxonWitch 2018-04-20
Whatever you say, it allows free speech. If you don't like it go to MSN sites, they won't allow free speech. I am disgusted by fascists that just spout hate about people who want to discuss immigration and diversity as they wish. Don't really care anymore about whiney SJW. They are worse than nazis nowadays.

That’s fucked up. I was just reading that article as you posted. Thank you :)
Sounds like nothing fishy there though...I’m surprised there hasn’t been worst or more posted.

?? We can't create any new websites anymore? What else is stopping you? Are you trying to get at the change in the law that allowed the take down of backpage? No problems if you aren't hosting human trafficking stuff.
