Sunflower oil

Anyone know anything about sunflower oil? been seeing it a lot in some of the ingredients for food i buy. I am skeptical of it since it appeared out of nowhere? or maybe I never realized. I also remember hearing that palm oil was harmful, so it makes me think other oils may be harmful as well. Why don't they just use olive oil?

Sunflower oil has been around for ever. I don't think it's particularly healthy and rapeseed/olive etc. Are better in general.

Rapeseed/Canola is very bad. Besides being GMO and full of carcinogenic Glyphisaye it binds up natural vitamin E uptake among other things.

"These studies all point in the same direction–that canola oil is definitely not healthy for the cardiovascular system. Like rapeseed oil, its predecessor, canola oil is associated with fibrotic lesions of the heart. It also causes vitamin E deficiency, undesirable changes in the blood platelets and shortened life-span in stroke-prone rats when it was the only oil in the animals’ diet. Furthermore, it seems to retard growth, which is why the FDA does not allow the use of canola oil in infant formula."

Sunflower oil is ok if it's fresh. Better to steer towards coconut and avacado oils for chips etc. Real olive oil is good but has a low smoke point so not good for frying or sautee or chips. Italian olive oil imported has been adulterated with soybean oil for over a decade now. Among other things. So buy from US producers or trusted sources. They don't list it on the label either.

Here is a fats primer also: https://www.westonaprice.org/know-your-fats/

Rape is a plant. So no it's not full of gmo in general. Maybe specific types from your country. Cold pressed rapeseed oil has decent amounts of omega 3.

What is your issue with GMO?

They GMO it to suck up glyphosate. Not to make is more nutritious or delicious.

There is GMO and then there is GMO.

Bolstering a plants natural pesticide or vitimin count is one thing. Making it tolerate poison is a whole other ball of wax.

Fair point, I’ll have to read more about making plants more resistant to our own pesticides.

Just having healthy soil and mineral levels helps plants against pests and weeds. It's old wisdom too. Have too many of those painful stickers on your property it's a sign the soil is lacking. Use some SeaCrop overall and then depending on what's wrong treat the soil naturally to balance.

So many reasons but here are a few quick ones. 1) it causes a much higher use of glyphosate which is polluting everything and is a known carcinogen among other things 2) GMOs have not been properly studied. We are already seeing them alter and destroy healthy gut flora which isn't that surprising when you realize they are inserting DNA from bacteria into the DNA of plants. 3) It's killing the bees probably a combination is the heavier use of herbicides and pesticides but also the DNA sequences they use against pests also effect the beneficial pollinators

How can I try this rapeseed you speak of?

They market it as canola oil.

CANada Oil Low Acidity

Canola etymology

For some reason rape wasn't as marketable.

Except in the pudding cup industry.

Freaking SD cards. And you need a ginsu or a torch to get into the fucking things.

One specific brand of shit tier rapeseed oil is canola

Just give me your address, I'll send you some.

Rapeseed? Canola is the most gmoed plant on the planet and the glyphosate gets reduced into the oil. Do not eat rape oil aka canola oil.

Here's an appetizing tidbit: Canola was an invented name; a combo of Canada and Oil, Canada Oil is Canola. It has erucic acid swimming around with the glyphosate.

Awesome. I know about the name. Growing up in the prairies the yellow fields blowing in the winds are really pretty.

Ask dad "Hey what plant is that? Mustard?"

"Nope. That's rape, son"

Me "huh?"

It’s not that great, but not as bad as soy and others. Olive is better.

Palm oil is not the best, but it is even worse due to the environmental effects of growing and harvesting. I've never heard anything negative about sunflower oil.

Oil is not healthy at all. It is a highly processed macronutrient that bypasses large parts of the digestion process. Its funny how people can accept that processed carbohydrate (sugar) is bad for them, but the same logic escapes them when it comes to oil.

It's terrible for your health as every vegetable oil, check out Ray Peat's work, he's an anti-authoritarian biologist who has done extensive research about polyunsaturated fats, really fascinating.

Olive oil is better, but more expensive and doesn't get quite so hot when cooking.

Sunflower oil is nothing new, has been available for ages.

Palm oil is ok (afaik) but it is really destructive for the environment because they cut down a lot of rain-forest in order to make palm tree plantations.

SO:

Palm oil: no

Sunflower oil: fine for frying stuff

Olive oil: The cheaper kind is fine for frying, the more expensive is great for salad etc.

Has omega 6 essential fatty acids which are associated with inflammation (heart disease) if you don’t balance it 1:1 with omega 3’s. At least not gmo like canola, corn & soy.

“As you can see, this golden oil is very high in omega-6 PUFAs clocking in at about 60%. This amount is not as high as other popular oils at the healthfood store such as: Grapeseed oil (70-76%) Hemp seed oil (72-81%) Pumpkin seed oil (64%) Nonetheless, it is still high enough to be a concern. Note that rice bran oil, used by Chipotle for cooking, is significantly lower in PUFAs at 38%. The peanut oil used by Chick-fil-A and Five Guys Burgers has a PUFA content of 32%. However, Chipotle uses sunflower oil to fry its chips and Chick-fil-A/Five Guys use peanut oil to make french fries. So, you’re still getting plenty of vegetable oils if you eat at either of these restaurants. What’s more, the sunflower seed oil and peanut oil used in these chains is highly refined, so you’re consuming rancid vegetable oils too.

Another concern is that sunflower oil contains no beneficial, inflammation reducing omega-3 fats like those found in walnut oil or flax seed oil. This is a problem if someone consumes sunflower oil regularly, as it will unbalance the crucial ratio of omega-6 / omega-3 fats in the diet. If we were exposed to only miniscule amounts of this oil, it wouldn’t be a concern.”

Except in the pudding cup industry.
