Are there any?
Are there any growing ones?
If not, why aren't people making more?

Do a google search for “Alternatives to YouTube”. Count how many times bitchute is suggested to you. Feel free to post your results here ;)

What are you looking for in a video hosting site that YouTube isn't filling? Is it the censorship? How would you get around this on an alternative? Wouldn't you just be changing the people who control the censorship to someone you maybe agree with more?

Someone just needs to write a non shilly code that promotes relevant and quality content similar to YouTube's old algorithm

Who is behind all the censorship?
What groups/ organizations are coordinating and have positioned themselves as the "go-to authority" on what types of content should be suppressed/ censored?
What are their underlying motives?
Do you know? You should. They've been working at it incessantly for decades.
1 workwork_workwork 2018-07-12
How are you going to keep them off of a new site?
1 Apolitical_Corrector 2018-07-12
Expose them for who they are, what they are doing, and why, and when they indignantly DEMAND that you censor, display their demands front and center, and tell them to FUCK OFF.
1 workwork_workwork 2018-07-12
You can register a domain for almost nothing. Let us know the name of your new site as soon as you get it working

The government? Cia/nsa etc?

The ADL and those that share their agenda.

Blockchain based hosting services. Theoretically immutable.
1 workwork_workwork 2018-07-12
So someone can put something in this chain and distribute it but it can't be removed? That sounds very inviting for pedos.
1 DontTreadOnMe16 2018-07-12
Problem is, everything will attract pedos. Doesn’t mean we shouldn’t move forward with progress because of it.
They said the internet was only for criminals and pedophiles too back in the day. We just need to come up with ways to deal with the problem along the way.

Well, you need to start over if you can't already say how they'd manage to remove child porn, but not anything else. Any idea I can think of just moves control of the censorship to another group. How can you do "free speech" while still maintaining control? I seriously don't see how this can work at all, either you host the videos yourself, or you trust another entity to host it for you (behaving by their rules). I don't see any other way around it.

AI identification and obfuscation of the block?
It’s definitely a bit of a catch 22, but much like the scaling issue with bitcoin, I believe solutions are inevitable.
1 workwork_workwork 2018-07-12
Who is going to train the AI? Can they train it to block other things?
I think the same problems still exist, you are just changing the ones that censor from YouTube to AI.
1 DontTreadOnMe16 2018-07-12
Very true. That’s a great point. Maybe have a human element for overriding the AI censors? Like some kind of consensus based override?
1 puntiospilatos 2018-07-12
Well technically they could just filter the content before it is submitted to the blockchain that holds the data and once its on there, its immutable. And the rule will be no nudity.
1 workwork_workwork 2018-07-12
And you'll still have people here screaming about "free speech" (even though it doesn't apply) because something they like isn't available.
1 puntiospilatos 2018-07-12
Well there are always going to be idiots. The good thing about idiots is that they surmount to nothing. I was talking about practical real world solutions.
1 bdLhellcat 2018-07-12
It would not be censorship if the guidelines are pointed out before hand.
Something that states, "This is our platform, these are the things we don't allow (nudity, child endangerment) all other speech and viewpoints welcome."
If guidelines are laid out up front, there is no censorship. You either use it as intended or don't use it.

Why is there a Youtube symbol appearing in your title?
Good question too.
1 neurofluxation 2018-07-12
Reddit's CSS for the site has this:
Which means that if the title of the post's link contains the word "youtube", it will add that icon at the end. In this case, the Reddit title links to itself, which includes "viable_alternatives_to_youtube" in the URL.

Real world.

I post all my videos on Dtube and Bitchute. Often, I will get more views there than YouTube- but there is very little interaction. No comments or likes. They have potential, but there needs to be more interaction to grow a community. IGTV has potential, but it's mobile only- and owned by Facebook. https://d.tube/ https://www.bitchute.com/
1 DontTreadOnMe16 2018-07-12
d.tube community is pretty active in the conspiracy based videos. Which makes total sense
1 DontTreadOnMe16 2018-07-12
d.tube kinda
1 Ellaspaw 2018-07-12
Replace the word YouTube with hooktube
