Conducting Our Own Test Thursday

1  2018-09-18 by WarSanchez

Is there anything we can do on Thursday to experiment on how intrusive this new alert system will be?

Any volunteers to cut data and phone reception off of an active line? Can an app be made to disable it?

Just curious as to what people have as ideas to experiment with.

I was just looking at that number and wondering, what the heck?

The sub has been exhibiting even weirder behavior since the Mass Ban the other day. I'm getting where I don't even want to post anything anymore. Sucks.

Yeah I think scores aren't really going to mean anything for the next couple weeks while everything settles down unfortunately I also think that means that they're going to be focusing more on this sub.

Also I really enjoy your contributions to this sub and I'm sure many of the other regular users do as well.

Thanks man! I appreciate that!

Dude, fuck the votes. If you have something to say, say it. Who gives a fuck if you go -15 in 10 seconds?

In subs like this, downvotes can sometimes be a badge of honor. Some would say it’s a sign of being over the target.

I agree. Heck, this is a sub where I often start at the bottom and work my way up. I also do that in r/worldnews and r/news. The bottom is where the truth tellers live. It's also where the scum lives, but scum is often not hiding their intent or beliefs so there's that.

I edited to add some context. I don't care about the votes etc, it was targeted straight up meanness. Bummed the ole Duder out for a few days.

This aggression will not stand.

Lol! It will not stand man.

the test was postponed until next month

I think it got postponed.

Do you mean for someone to do something like put their phone in airplane mode and see if the alert still comes through? Not sure I totally follow

I'm not familiar with airplane mode so I don't know if it cuts off all communications completely.

I guess what I want to know is if they can remotely turn it on as long as you have an active line so that they can get these messages to you.

Wish I knew what time they planned the test. Seems easy enough to try turning a phone off to see if it will turn itself on

Man I gave up my smart phone almost 3 years ago. I look around sometimes, even right at this moment, and everyone around me has their nose buried in their phone. It's scary to see how something has completely taken over people's lives. You can't have a normal conversation with anyone anymore. It's really sad to me.

I don't think alot of people notice because they're noses are buried in their device too. It's definitely changed human behavior towards one another.

you're a hero and i mean that

Thank you so much!

why though? we are all buried in technology every single day. when it wasnt phones it was cmputers. and tv. before that radio.

lol you are comparing our current state of connectivity to the radio? i'm just gonna say No

lol you are comparing our current state of connectivity... to the radio? that's ridiculous my friend

im just saying, why dispose of the worlds best tool because you hate technology.... when you are sitting on reddit for hours

am i wrong or you are too young to have known a life without smart phones?

just a guess, but are you too young to have known a life without smart phones?

I'm old enough to remember. You said you are looking around and see everyone on a phone. So I'm guessing you're on a laptop. What's the difference between them on the phone and you on a laptop?

No, I am not OP and I didn't say that.

Also, someone can both use a laptop and believe that people should use devices less. Does that bother you?

Don't know why that would bother me. Just found it amusing that someone with their nose in one device felt morally superior because other people were using a different device.

morally superior because i think we should spend less time connected to devices? you said it, not me. perhaps you're just projecting that you feel morally inferior?

I'm guessing you're one of those guys that calls clean energy supporters stupid because they also own stuff made from plastic...

morally superior because i think we should spend less time connected to devices??

Are you one of those guys that calls clean energy supporters stupid because they also own stuff made from plastic?

Look at your user history. You spend a lot of time just on this sub. I get it. Everyone else should spend less time connected to devices but you always on a device is totally different. You're doing "research" on youtube!

By the way, I'm a clean energy supporter that has a lot of stuff made of plastic. I would be a HUGE hypocrite to say those who own plastic stuff are stupid and run to a sub to circle jerk about it.

lol why does it bother you so much that I both a) use this sub and b) think we'd be better off with less connection? the world must be bleak in black and white my friend.

lol i don't get why it bothers you so much that I both a) use this sub and b) think we'd be better off with less connection. the world must be bleak in black and white my friend.

lol i don't get why you're so bothered by the fact that I both a) use this sub (lots in the past few days) and b) think we'd be better off with less connection. pretty mind blowing stuff i guess

The hidden affects of 4G on the human brain.

My husband and I did a podcast episode on exactly this

I am a tech junkie. Having a smartphone allows me to do most things I'd do at a computer. So I find myself more active.

That said, I find it extremely rude to not put your phone down, when with company, or having a conversation, or answering it because you has to check a message.

Dude, my last "job" I worked as a Software Engineer 2.

Having a smartphone allows me to do most things I'd do at a computer. So I find myself more active.

This is how they get you. Your job never ends.

Too true. Ive had a couple employers give me phone's, and say that I had to answer immediately when they called.

The official word is that they will conduct the test on October 3 due to the disruption from hurricane Florence.

This is a memo I received today.

FEMA, along with the FCC, will be conducting a test of the Emergency Alert and Wireless Emergency Alert Systems on October 3. The test was rescheduled due to the severe weather across much of the East Coast. Only powered on, Wireless Emergency Alert capable phones from participating carriers within range of an active cell tower will receive the test message.

Thanks man! I appreciate that!
