I think this is just a perception based on today's technology. Communications are much more unrestricted. You can say and make any statement you want to and more people than every can react to your positions than before. The amount of suppression is probably way less now than in the past because there are so many outlets for one to be heard. 100 years ago you could be silenced with little effort now not so much.

I think hes trying to make the argument that corporations have gained power comparable to that of governments on this medium and shouldn't we shouldn't leave that unchecked. The internet is a entity and is going to be really influential in our advancement as a society.

I am not one for giving corporations power over personal rights. I do not like the trend of banning or suppressing voices but I do understand that they are not the only avenue for unrestricted speech and that's how they justify the practice.
