What's the deal with captchas new way to check you're human?
1 2018-10-14 by CelderSrolls
Before they used to get you to type out words or phrases, and in some instances (iirc) i think it was because they were "teaching" word scanning software.
But now, they have you select several photos of a certain object (cars, street signs, busses). These are clearly photos from Google maps etc. Are they using this to try train some sort of recognition software?

Always thought it was a clever way of outsmarting computers. Never thought of it being used to develop new software. So I’m gonna say yes, to your question.
1 MrTubsey 2018-10-14
That's not a conspiracy, that's literally on Googles official page.
Every time our CAPTCHAs are solved, that human effort helps digitize text, annotate images, and build machine learning datasets. This in turn helps preserve books, improve maps, and solve hard AI problems.

That's fuckin' creepy as shit.
We are helping skynet learn. What could go wrong?!

Worst case scenario, we get to live out our favorite action flick.

Because Kate Brewster, his future wife, was being set up as the real leader with him as a figurehead. She was in the next movie but they dropped that angle and she was just some hot redhead standing in the background looking busty AF.

Mb a global AI overlord wouldn't be so bad? Atm we have greedy Psychopath humans on top.
1 mescaliero 2018-10-14
Amen.

Who do you think will be arranging for the programming behind the scenes? Who will have more direct control over that AI? You and I, or them? Same people.
1 LAcumDodgers 2018-10-14
Im hoping this forgot the /s?
1 ViciousPuppy 2018-10-14
Have you played the original Deus Ex? At the ending there is an interesting choice between letting an AI rule over the world as the "elite" that argues that it can never be morally corrupted like humans, or instead replace the old evil "elite" with some Illuminati guys who at the moment seem good and concerned for all humanity.
Anyhow we'll see what happens in 30 years.
1 CelderSrolls 2018-10-14
To be honest, I didn't necessarily think it was one. I just wasn't sure where to ask, but knew someone here would have the answer (as you just proved lol)

You're providing free labour - people normally get paid for this work. Google crowd source companies.
1 Boogie__Fresh 2018-10-14
It's not free labour, you're being provided a service in exchange for helping to improve their software. It's a transaction like any other.

AI is going to take over! First it just needs to learn how to recognize traffic lights.
1 shoziku 2018-10-14
and how to use turn signals. please please please

A lot of conspiracies have publicly available documentation. In fact, only the good ones do.
1 Pianu_Keys 2018-10-14
It doesn't have to be hidden for it to be a conspiracy.
1 MrTubsey 2018-10-14
Isn't that the definition of a conspiracy? According to the sidebar of this sub:" Conspiracy - a secret plan by a group to do something unlawful or harmful"
Anyway, op already clarified his motivation.
1 Boogie__Fresh 2018-10-14
Yes it does.

You deserve more credit. I'm a web dev and this is out in the open but people dont realize it.... Cause.... Well its Google... We trust GOOGLE!

1 piss_machine 2018-10-14
OP, you make a great point.
Human, help me understand what a car looks like.
1 MrTubsey 2018-10-14
Not really, the code to generate those text capchas is open source
1 piss_machine 2018-10-14
No I mean, they've finished "teaching" the AI all possibilities of what letters and number looked like warped, etc.
1 MKUltraMadeMeDoIt 2018-10-14
They are all to do with cities and driving. Pretty sure it's training automated vechicles currently.
1 bringsmemes 2018-10-14
neat thought
1 ShittingOutYourTwats 2018-10-14
It's training my dictate
1 RMFN 2018-10-14
Absolutely. We are "teaching" the AI.
1 MrTubsey 2018-10-14
But don't be afraid, we have a secret weapon : spelling mistakes!!!
1 RMFN 2018-10-14
You have no idea how right I am. Maybe in a few years they'll have everything sorted out. But for esoteric content the AI has not caught up.
1 MrTubsey 2018-10-14
" esoteric content" ?

Boston dynamics have a biped robot that can jump over obstacles.

I am an expert at identifying 3rd world store fronts now.
1 r721 2018-10-14
Yeah, fucking store fronts are the worst.
1 ViciousPuppy 2018-10-14
I don't care what specifically I'm identifying but rather the kind of identification. The ones that ask you to identify everything from 9 blurry images are fine. The ones that refill with new random images after you click the ones that have the thing you're looking for are the worst though. Triples the whole time to get through the thing and sometimes you mess something up. Welp, got to redo that again!
Nope, I quit the service that was using that demonic CAPTCHA (albeit for mostly other reasons).
1 pubies 2018-10-14
No shit, at least show us photos that bear some resemblance to where we live.
1 ShittingOutYourTwats 2018-10-14
like uncle sam raping someone with a gas pump or uncle sam smoking a joint...or uncle sam at the top of Mandalay Bay shooting mother fuckers

1 ShittingOutYourTwats 2018-10-14

1 smellofburntalmonds 2018-10-14
Yes it's to train AI object photo recognition. Look at how Google reverse image search works!
1 dirtydanisreal 2018-10-14
The picture ones are tedious as hell and difficult.
1 Esternocleido 2018-10-14
Mmmhhh maybe you are not a biological? Have you noticed issues solving other kinds of problems? Can you play an instrument?
1 tigerjaws 2018-10-14
nah they use it to imporve their maps and shit, usually they're frmo other countries and its to like show the algorithm 'this is actaully a street' 'this is actually the lamp post so intersection' etc, just all an effort to improve their deep learning algorithms
1 Paristocrat 2018-10-14
How the heck can they tell you you've entered it incorrectly when they're supposed to not even know themselves.
1 IrisDColeman 2018-10-14
Because this post is bullshit. The images are recognized by google BEFORE you have to select them, how the hell would it verify otherwise?
1 blupeli 2018-10-14
Some are known and others are new. They cross check your results with answers of other humans. The new ones where they don't know the results they probably accept anything from you.
1 missdingdong 2018-10-14
And sometimes an endless stream of them after you've already clicked on the requested objects or scenes.
1 kylesnooze 2018-10-14
It's training image recognition software I imagine, but that doesn't really explain why it's all signs, cars, or storefronts. I doubt it's a huge conspiracy, the old typed captchas were for translating printed text to digital, but I imagine the tech has gotten to the point where they just scan it and convert at the same time
1 digera 2018-10-14
I think it's funny when they show a picture of my house and tell me to select every square containing the CIA's new blacksite. They think they can intimidate me lol

1 Boogie__Fresh 2018-10-14
Google says it helps their "Google Photos" app identify objects, it makes searches more accurate.
1 stormaster 2018-10-14
I KNOW RIGHT, I DON'T UNDERSTAND WHY GOOGLE KEEPS DENYING THAT I AM A HUMAN AND TOTALLY NOT A ROBOT.
