He will be released once the evidence of the rape charges is revealed to the judge, his temporary incarceration was really a formality given the circumstances.
It may be a formality but I think the fact that he was denied bail and is being held because they say the chance he won't show up for his December 14th court date is completely political. He turned himself in, why would he turn himself in, pay bail to get out, then just run away.
It was obvious he was going to be denied bail. He's wanted for a serious crime, is not a British National, is known to move from country to country and refused initially to give a British address when asked by the court. Further, a few of the people who offered sureties for him didn't even know him; why would he care if they lost money?
It gets better. He was originally charged with rape, but his accusers were found to have tweeted about their conquest, so that was a no-starter. They weren't charged with making false accusations, and instead they went with the 'no condom' charge. It's a farce.
"Mr Assange's first accuser made no immediate attempt to contact the authorities. It was only when she was contacted by the second accuser four days later that the pair decided to go to the police.
Instead the first woman arranged a "crayfish party" – a traditional Swedish summer get-together – for the following evening in honour of the WikiLeaks founder in her flat. In an entry on the woman's Twitter account, which she later tried to erase, Mr Assange's first accuser described her joy at hosting a party for the world's most famous cyber activist. "Sitting outside nearly freezing with the world's coolest people," she wrote. "It's pretty amazing."
Catlin observed that both Ardin and Sofia Wilén, the second accuser, sent SMS messages and tweets boasting of their conquests following the alleged "rapes."
"In the case of Ardin it is clear that she has thrown a party in Assange's honour at her flat after the 'crime' and tweeted to her followers that she is with the 'the world’s coolest smartest people, it’s amazing!'" he wrote.
"The exact content of Wilén’s mobile phone texts is not yet known but their bragging and exculpatory character has been confirmed by Swedish prosecutors. Niether Wilén’s nor Ardin’s texts complain of rape," Catlin said.
It's not entirely accurate. Though he is also wanted for exposing himself in some manner, after they've had sex, and allegedly continuing the sex act after he allegedly broke the condom intentionally.

Some information on the deleted tweets of one accuser [google translate it]
Please provide a citation over what precisely he is wanted for in Sweden that does not ultimately come from the mouth of Assange's lawyer. As far as I am aware, he is wanted on suspicion of "rape and sexual molestation". As the BBC points out (hardly the biggest pro-government source on the planet):
One of the charges is that he had unprotected sex with a woman, identified only as Miss A, when she insisted he use a condom.
Another is that he had unprotected sex with another woman, Miss W, while she was asleep.
The AOL News story has been circulating freely over the past week claiming that Ny stated that he is not wanted for rape, but for "sex by surprise", whatever that is. Having read the AOL story itself, Ny doesn't directly speak to AOL News, but the claim comes from Assange's lawyer. Hardly an unbiased actor here.
Further, if he really is only wanted for "sex by surprise" which, AFAIK, only carries a small fine, then lucky you, your prayers have been answered! Under The Extradition Act 2003, Sections 10 and 64, the District Judge has to decide whether the supposed crime is an extraditable offence. Does a crime involving only punishment of a fine fit this?
Again, please provide a citation for any of this. "Continuing after the condom broke, despite her protestations" is the very model of rape in the Anglo-American legal tradition. I'd be surprised if Assange wasn't being accused of rape in Sweden, if that's the accusation. Sweden's legal system isn't that alien to those of us used to common law.
The judge is an old colleague of mine, and, insofar as it can be said of anyone in the legal profession, he's not an establishment clone. Edward Fail is an East End, legal aid, mostly criminal law outfit which regularly instructs civil liberties lawyers like those from 14 Tooks (Mike Mansfield's chambers).
In the UK you will be granted bail if you are not deemed to be a danger and if there is no risk of you doing a runner, otherwise you will not be granted bail. In certain circumstances you will always be held in custody rather than granted bail, such as for violent crimes, and often in extradition cases.
If you are granted bail you do not pay anything up-front, you just have to prove you have the funds available.
He only turned himself in after weeks on the run, So yeah all the time. If he'd answered the charges when they were posted he'd have had a lot more sympathy and would have most certainly got bailed.
"Police contacted Mr Stephens [Assange's solicitor] on Monday night [6th Dec - 2 days ago!] after receiving a European arrest warrant from the Swedish authorities."
"Before leaving Sweden Mr. Assange asked to be interviewed by the prosecution on several occasions in relation to the allegations, staying over a month in Stockholm, at considerable expense and despite many engagements elsewhere, in order to clear his name."
Maybe it is formality but I don't see him being released. The MSM are trying to crush this story. In UK they have come out over the last few days with the most bullshit of stories in order to take sheeples minds off this.
USGovernment want him gone and this is the first leg in that process. Don't believe me look @ Wikileaks see how they used gary mckinnon as diplomatic pawn. The USG doesn't give in. They can steam roller entire countries justice systems (ultimately the law) in the case for Iraq war inquiry in UK.
Don't shy away and read some stupid story about how aspirin is going to save you from cancer when last year they said it would cause cancer. Keep up the protest and get our country back to democracy real democracy!
One of the problems is that the British judge is not allowed to see the evidence against him or consider it in whether to grant the extradition. He can only rule on whether the extradition itself is legal.
That seems pretty unlikely at the moment. The US have not pressed charges or even suggested any AFAIK, apart from the odd looney shouting "off with his head!"
I don't understand either - He's not a US citizen - in fact he's Australian and hasn't broken any laws that I'm aware of in Australia or the US - as such there is no legal reason that he could be sent to the US and if the US asks I'll hope my government (Australia) has the balls to stand up for a citizen as it would set a dangerous precedent if the US can ask for citizens to be sent there without charge.
He will but who knows what is going to happen in the next couple of days - personally i would dump every file and be done with it - give the governments a nice xmas present
people can't make up facts that aren't true and they also can't hide the truth forever. Information is here to be released and shared and known. At least, that's what I believe the purpose of knowledge to be. I highly doubt he will be locked up for much longer. And even if he is, at least it's making a big scene throughout the world which is just drawing more attention to Wikileaks.
They sure as fuck aren't just gonna kill him, so we'll have to wait and see what happens.
Are you kidding, they're busying themselves with building espionage laws all around him. They'll hold him until the laws are erected around him and then test them by putting him to death, sit back, and watch us do nothing about it.
Yep, we're fucked man. The average person cannot and in most cases will not see through the BS the media feeds them and they can't really stomach the idea that they have been snowed for so long by the people that are supposed to be working for the common weal. It is apparent now that a faction of those in power have compromised. The world's politics are reduced to sweetheart deals. It couldn't be more clear now that the truth is not something the American people are ready to swallow. How can you cause someone to open their eyes to this? I'd love some good tactics to induce critical reasoning in my fellow zombies.
It seems his extradition to Sweden (if it happens) will help his cause. At the moment it's really easy for the US to extradite from the UK, but Sweden doesn't have a similarly close agreement. It leaves me wondering if the rape charges were part of a cleaver political game Assanges set up himself to protect himself from the US government.
I understand that the role of the magistrate in this case is not to review the charges, it is to review the legality of the arrest and extradition warrants. If these are in order there may not be a lot m'lord can do about it.
Here's my armchair lawyer input:
Firstly, DAE remember a case a few years back when a group of protestors broke into an air base and damaged some BAE Hawk jets, and the judge acquitted them after accepting their plea they were acting to prevent human rights abuses elsewhere in the world? I can't find the story at the mo, if anyone else can find a link that would be great.
Secondly the Gary McKinnon case while not necessarily a great analogy does show that extradition from the UK is not always so simple; you can’t be extradited if there is a risk you will not get a fair trial or be otherwise harmed.
Should this prove to be true, I'll be quite content.
I suspect at least though that the temporary confinement, based on allegations that would never have confined anyone else, will somehow turn into a deportation to the U.S. to face quiet charges.
Hell, these days perhaps a little enhanced interrogation might be in order. No geek pussy bitch would stand up to that right?
Too soon, OP. Let's see how this plays out. He's not charged with anything, so he should no be held for long. Of course, if the Swedes deliver him to US Authorities, yes, he's a political prisoner.
England is obliged to detain him as there is a warrant issued for his arrest. It is normal for them to refuse bail to a non citizen from what I have read. i know in my country he would be bailed very lightly considering his high profile, low risk and co-operation.
If they draw out the process for months or hand him over to the US on further warrants, then we need to take to the streets in protest.
At this point, it is really the apparently stupid actions of these women that are most disappointing. They are entitled to due process as well though.
I am extremely disappointed my Prime Minister has not come out to denounce the ridiculous calls for physical harm to one of our citizens.
Bail is notoriously difficult to obtain for any foreigner charged with an offence of any gravity. Concerns over whether the person would return if released on bail, coupled with the difficulty of establishing and checking the credentials of a detained foreigner, means that the judicial process is weighted against a release on bail. In the rare cases where bail is granted, the person is often told they must remain in that country until the case comes to court. Their passport may be held and they might have to sign on regularly at a local police station. Often, in these circumstances the person finds it extremely difficult to obtain work and pay for accommodation, and, is generally ineligible for any local social security provision.
If you're in Australia near Sydney, please come visit @ airport... I'm very pissy with you country right now b/c I had to pay $30 to friggin transit between NZ and LAX.
Rules rules rules rules - you live you life by them. Your government controls you with them.
I'm all for laws on murder etc. but saying upvote and fuck the intergalatic law is all a pun - the real issue is assange and the false imprisonment for political purposes
if you look at the case against him it is a joke and it would not pass a jury in trial
I agree, he's simply being made an example of so the US government can express its power and authority over the people of Earth.
My truest hope for the future is a united effort of Eurasian nations against the imposed global policing laws that the US dictates with nothing more than its grossly overpowered military.
Which is heavily polluted by propagandists and cointelpro ops "left..... right....left......right....... assange should be assassinated..... bush is a hero.....left.......right......."
What voice of the people. "I think he's right..... no I think he's left.... no I don't fuckn think much at all"
migshark is pointing out that you stated an opinion in your headline. When this rule of reddiquette is followed, readers can view the source site/video/picture and form their own opinions without being tainted by OP's initial reaction.
apologies to the reddit rule book and spelling/nosey trolls but i think alot of people agree with the statement, there are a few that don't to but i would say that many people express an opinion in their posts that's reddit and we should savour it
Reddit is all about being opinionated as long as the hive agrees. Otherwise, there will always be someone telling you that you should have stayed impartial.
i am not a newspaper or television news outlet who like to promote bullshit impartially when in reality they are covering the asses of government - i have opinions and they should be aired in public, and all who disagree with me should have their opinions heard in public
Are you referring to reddiquette, because up above all the little clauses is the one that says it is not a hard and fast set of rules that you seem to have neglected to read.
The guidelines are about what the community wants. I presume that you do agree that most reddit users dislike people pleading for upvotes in their thread titles. That's all that matters.
maybe you should chill out and air your opinion not tell me off for a particular rule being broken - as i have said previously i apologise for breaking the intergalactic law.
Assange is a political prisoner and no amount of side stepping on rule breaking will convince me to change the message
I can do both. I did neither, however. I merely explained the logic to you.
Side stepping on rule breaking? Do you have some kind of persecution complex? Don't you realise that a topic can be explained to you without the intent to obfuscate another? It's not like you can change the message once you've posted it, anyway. I was simply saying that you shouldn't go where you're not wanted. These rules don't exist in the woods, and I'm sure that they won't mind your message.
Yeah, an unwanted opinion. Again, you're stating an opinion in a way that isn't wanted where you're doing it. So why not find a forum better suited for you? That's a serious question, by the way.
A community is held together by its rules, so yes, excuse me if I care about the reddit community. But that's not really why I bring it up. There's just something about such a lack of common courtesy, coupled with such a grand display of ADHD, to the point of not even reading the rules of whatever it is that you're using, that I just can't help but comment on. And that's my bad, I guess.
If you scroll down to the bottom of this or any other page on Reddit, there is a little link in the Help column called reddiquette.
The very first thing it says is:
Please don't:
-Plead for votes in the title of your submission. ("Vote This Up to Spread the Word!", "If this makes the front page, I'll adopt this stray cat and name it Reddit" etc.)
I am starting to think that maybe the link should actually be at the top of every page.
What we're seeing is US politicians trying to avoid embarrassment by shooting the messenger in an attempt to stifle the message. And the world is horrified to see how quickly the US government can overlook Democratic ideals such as rule-of-law and free speech in their attempts to shut-down Wikileaks. Likewise, the speed with which major corporations (Paypal, Visa, Mastercard, Amazon, etc.) and even world governments (Australia) are bowing to US pressure indicates their loyalty to US leadership above that of their citizens and customers.
But even as you watch this unfold, you can do something! Run a TOR relay now to protect free speech on the internet. And please consider some of these alternatives. If you value democracy, then help preserve it, NOW!
Likewise, the speed with which major corporations (Paypal, Visa, Mastercard, Amazon, etc.) and even world governments (Australia) are bowing to US pressure
The effort to shut down Wikileaks intensified dramatically after JA announced the next release would be bank documents. It seems more likely the US is putting pressure on other governments at the bequest of major corporations rather than the other way around.
2015 - "Welcome to the United Kingdom of America and the Western Hemisphere Territory. Please remove all notion of human civility and your shoes for inspection. Now, SPREAD 'EM."
i expect jack shit from my government, they do nothing for me except tax the fuck out of me, protect me from invisable enemies, and pollute my mind - people are waking up and the target is not the government but the media who promote their bullshit propaganda
International law is as much a fallacy as Intergalactic law. There is no such thing as either.
There are International agreements which can influence the laws of nations. They are however neither global agreements or global laws as there is no global governing body with the jurisdiction to enforce them.
International merely means between two (or more) nations. If you look at the word components of inter-nation-al it becomes more clear. International agreements literally sit "between" nations until such time as both parties implement them in local law.
Now, whether Assange is consider a political prisoner depends on your opinion. My opinion is that he is. Whether he is legally considered a political prisoner depends on what laws are implemented under the jurisdiction you are in.
So called International Law is only relevant to those who are under the same agreement between nations and have implement those "guidelines". The ironic things are International agreements is that they are usually formed under duress (trade agreements, etc.) which should invalidate them under the law proper.
In the end it all really just comes down to duress whether it be by military means, trade embargos, or whatever means are used. Humanity functions by much more primal and primitive means than we care to do admit and this is what is really being hidden. The foul nature of humanity that can manifest at the national level.
Well sir, i feel sorry for your country they have been totally raped in the ass by the USA EU IMF economic military - your country and mine to have been raped and pillaged by the elite - bow down to your new unelected masters of the EU
its like a scene out of star wars the empire has finally got you without a shot being fired
Anytime I see "think" and "law" getting too close to each other in a sentence, I worry that the money is going to fly out of my wallet at $100 a half hour.
I'd just like to point out that this is the same /r/conspiracy that just a week ago was pummeling me with downvotes for my explanations on why wikileaks is not a branch of the Israeli govt.
I even spent time here defending wikileaks against someone whom I could not convince that his logic that wikileaks was run by zionst millionaire Nazi pedophiles was flawed.
You begging for upvotes from these same people means nothing.
This situation has made me completely disgusted with my own country more than anything else (I'm Australian).
The terrorism line the government is running is bullshit anyway, they fought and fought for the release of David Hicks, an Australian being held at Guantanamo for terrorism.
It's nice to see our government has America's metaphorical dick well and truly stuffed down our throats.
I feel sorry for Australians especially with the Great Firewall they have put up - one can only hope that people start to wake up and vote these scum bags out of office
There's usually a difference between the current laws on the books, the current beliefs of the population, and the current elected idiots. Take Canada, for example...some consider it quite civilized usually, but it's ruled by a religious zealot who denies climate change so he can help his oil-producing buddies, and is completely committed to killing brown people overseas.
I assume there are still right-wing politicians in Sweden, and that their government is still affected by US influence.
Yes, there is nothing wrong with the Swedish judiciary system, it just treats allegations of sex-crime rather seriously. If there is a conspiracy in this then I think it has to do with the women whom Assange allegedly wronged. However there are no real evidence except the claims from the two women - unfortunately this is almost always the case in rape-charges. I think Assange will be extradited to Sweden where he will be questioned. I do not think he will be convicted of anything.
Britain is definitely not known as a good or humane country.
How is Sweden up to its neck in US foreign policy? I get the feeling that you're listening to your inner crazy, conspiracy pessimist, as opposed actually knowing anything about the country. I live here, so I'd love to hear you express your knowledge about it.
Enough said for you to be able to spread your ignorance freely, knowing that you never have to back up anything that you say? At least throw me something concrete, now that you've piqued my interest.
Take the post that you're responding to and replace "enough" with "suffice."
While it's a lot easier on the brain, things are not that simple. Could you tell me a little about this "Kangaroo court", and the rulings? I don't mind clarifying the articles for you if google translate manages to confuse itself.
Edit: I'm being a bit too snide. Hearing all of this bullshit about "surprise sex" and "broken condom" laws will do that to you. Our extradition treaty with the US doesn't cover political or military crimes. They'd have a hard time trying to get an asylum seeker.
Assange should not only be kept away from the jails general population for his own good but even administrative segregation because if they think (rightly or wrongly)you're a punk, a snitch, an alleged rapist or a traitor you are a marked man. All four? That's a death sentence from other inmates. I don't care for the man but I don't wish him dead so set him up in a comfortable solitary environment. I don't wish to put down anyone's hero but this is how the inmates will definitely see him. Plus he's famous
He is indeed a political prisoner. In fact, I am sure if it wasnt for the so called "insurance file" he is golding, he would have already been found mysteriously strangled in his jail cell!
do you think your upvotes will get him released? Do you think if everyone sees your "fuck intergalactic law" post, he'll get released? Is this to convince everyone of your reasoning? All of these are stupid and make you very annoying for posting "upvote if..."
This is funny to watch when you remember (this was so long ago!) the uproar in Europe about Roman Polanski who is from his own admisison a child rapist but received support from the whole European elite and is free as a bird in Europe now, although still the target of an Interpol red notice. Talk about double standard!
The difference lies in the fact that this guy pleases the intellectual elite a lot, so he can get away with drugging and banging a 13 year-old girl up the ass for fuck's sake, while Julian displeases them quite a bit and is slammed for breaking a condomn while screwing hysterical groupies!
He turned himself in, the British courts are now reviewing extradition documents to see if it's permissible to send him back to Sweden. He's not a political prisoner. If he does go to jail, it will be for a molestation charge, which he will be tried for in Sweden, not the UK.
People need to calm down with the zealot-like rage about Assange's arrest, trying to make him out like some great symbol and martyr. If a case like this was brought against, say, a corporate head or American politician and dropped immediately like so many of you guys are demanding, you'd be just as furious. Just because Assange set up an interesting website doesn't mean he's above the law, or incapable of doing wrong.
Guys, can I first say Assange /= Wikileaks. Even if he is imprisoned that won't stop WikiLeaks.
There might be some legitmacy to these charges, which again does not mean that WikiLeaks isn't exposing important things that need to be known.
It's doubtful that InterPol would have issued this warrant if it were anybody but Assange.
The newspaper that was initially reporting on this in Sweden was also the same one who was looking to get Assange working as a monthly columnist for them. That way he could work away whilst being protected by some of the strongest press freedom laws in the world. To say they've been cagey about the details in the case is something of an understatement.
In conclusion: It's possible that Assange is guilty of actual rape here. Not technicality "condom broke but he carried on" rape, as in "held a woman down after she asked him to stop because he wasn't wearing a condom" and "had sex with someone while they were asleep" rape. Again, I said it's possible and we should assume innocence until proven otherwise but I just want to say that just because someone does important work, it doesn't mean that they can't also be a horrible human being. Also, I think that Naomi Klein sums up the whole case best
This post is no longer showing up in the top queue. It was 2nd on my home page, I refreshed and it's gone. I even did a search for it. The only way I found it was going to my liked tab on my user page. Sounds pretty damn close to:
This subreddit is for the REDACTED and the discussion of REDACTED that may or may not have REDACTED REDACTED REDACTED REDACTED REDACTED government agents.
Bullshit if this post was banned, or is being censored.
I think he should face trial for the accused sexual assault of 2 woman. No one is above the law. If he's innocent I'm sure the Swedish people will find him so and if he's guilty he can rot in jail.
The fact that anyone's even questioning the fact that this dude isn't a political prisoner is kind of stupid. Even homicidal rapists get out on bail. ESPECIALLY those that turn themselves in. The fact that this dude didn't, even though he turned himself in in the first place is kind of obvious. They're keeping the cracker inside until they find something else to pin on him to make him stfu.
He should be locked up, he leaked confidential material. None of which was actually suprising but still he's achieved nothing more than fraying international relations (bad) and threatened global security (bad).
He shouldn't be locked up - fraying international relations, they are only internal USG opinions, threatened global security???? No one fucks with America as it has the biggest weapons - and they use their big dick to go round the world interfering in other people's democracy and justice,
he doesn't deserve a medal the man who got this info deserves a fucking medal!!!
Assange leaked names of informants the US military used in Iraq. If there haven't been deaths directly attributed to that yet, I'll be very, very surprised.
The US Government are continually whining about how Wikileaks is putting people in danger. You'd think that the moment anyone was injured or killed that could even remotely be attributed to Wikileaks the US Gov would be shouting it from rooftops.
Assange is just an obtainable head that the USG can cut off to show people not to fuck with the USofA. He didn't leak documents, someone else who can't be or at least hasn't been caught leaked them. Wikileaks is a journalism web site. It may not be what we traditionally think of when we think of journalism, but it's a news source. If the BBC or some other forign news station had discovered and published this information on their own, the US wouldn't call for their destruction.
I believe that tje only reason the US is (alledgely) going after Assange is because he is someone they can take down easily. I guess thats the real American way.
Sweden is the sperm swallowing whore of the United States, Assange is a fucking imbecil for saying that 9/11 truthers are crazy, the US is a fascist dictatorship that did and will do more damage than Hitler, and what else is new.
He will but who knows what is going to happen in the next couple of days - personally i would dump every file and be done with it - give the governments a nice xmas present

He will be released once the evidence of the rape charges is revealed to the judge, his temporary incarceration was really a formality given the circumstances.
20 [deleted] 2010-12-08
It may be a formality but I think the fact that he was denied bail and is being held because they say the chance he won't show up for his December 14th court date is completely political. He turned himself in, why would he turn himself in, pay bail to get out, then just run away.
9 mom-bot 2010-12-08
Totally agreed.
Plus the rape allegations have been there since August but nothing was done until the new round of embassy cables was released.
3 JimmerUK 2010-12-08
The rape allegations were dropped back in August.
These are new (lesser) charges.

Anyone know how often bail is denied to people, in the UK, who voluntarily turn themselves in?
7 [deleted] 2010-12-08
It was obvious he was going to be denied bail. He's wanted for a serious crime, is not a British National, is known to move from country to country and refused initially to give a British address when asked by the court. Further, a few of the people who offered sureties for him didn't even know him; why would he care if they lost money?
11 Hippie_Tech 2010-12-08
"He's wanted for a serious crime..."
No, he's not. He's wanted for not using a condom during consensual sex. The rape charge was dismissed well in advance of the Interpol warrant.

It gets better. He was originally charged with rape, but his accusers were found to have tweeted about their conquest, so that was a no-starter. They weren't charged with making false accusations, and instead they went with the 'no condom' charge. It's a farce.

1 JimmerUK 2010-12-08
He's being accused of continuing to have sex with one woman after the condom broke, despite her protestations.
He's also accused of initiating sex with the other woman whilst she was asleep.
He denies both. Neither are rape charges.
1 [deleted] 2010-12-08
Again, please provide a citation for any of this. "Continuing after the condom broke, despite her protestations" is the very model of rape in the Anglo-American legal tradition. I'd be surprised if Assange wasn't being accused of rape in Sweden, if that's the accusation. Sweden's legal system isn't that alien to those of us used to common law.

http://www.aftonbladet.se/nyheter/article8244615.ab You can google translate and read the summary to the right. A couple of the counts were dropped, including rape.

5 norney 2010-12-08
In the UK you will be granted bail if you are not deemed to be a danger and if there is no risk of you doing a runner, otherwise you will not be granted bail. In certain circumstances you will always be held in custody rather than granted bail, such as for violent crimes, and often in extradition cases.
If you are granted bail you do not pay anything up-front, you just have to prove you have the funds available.
-10 Areufookinghigh 2010-12-08
He only turned himself in after weeks on the run, So yeah all the time. If he'd answered the charges when they were posted he'd have had a lot more sympathy and would have most certainly got bailed.
7 StoneMe 2010-12-08

"Police contacted Mr Stephens [Assange's solicitor] on Monday night [6th Dec - 2 days ago!] after receiving a European arrest warrant from the Swedish authorities."
http://www.bbc.co.uk/news/uk-11937110
"Before leaving Sweden Mr. Assange asked to be interviewed by the prosecution on several occasions in relation to the allegations, staying over a month in Stockholm, at considerable expense and despite many engagements elsewhere, in order to clear his name."

He turned himself in, by appointment, within 1-2 days of the warrant being provided to his solicitor.
16 02116663ag 2010-12-08
9 f1r3br4nd 2010-12-08
One of the problems is that the British judge is not allowed to see the evidence against him or consider it in whether to grant the extradition. He can only rule on whether the extradition itself is legal.
-8 02116663ag 2010-12-08
So he is pretty much gonna get shipped out to the US once landing on Swedish soil
4 norney 2010-12-08
That seems pretty unlikely at the moment. The US have not pressed charges or even suggested any AFAIK, apart from the odd looney shouting "off with his head!"

I don't understand either - He's not a US citizen - in fact he's Australian and hasn't broken any laws that I'm aware of in Australia or the US - as such there is no legal reason that he could be sent to the US and if the US asks I'll hope my government (Australia) has the balls to stand up for a citizen as it would set a dangerous precedent if the US can ask for citizens to be sent there without charge.

people can't make up facts that aren't true and they also can't hide the truth forever.
3 [deleted] 2010-12-08
Are you kidding, they're busying themselves with building espionage laws all around him. They'll hold him until the laws are erected around him and then test them by putting him to death, sit back, and watch us do nothing about it.
0 whosmav 2010-12-08
Yep, we're fucked man. The average person cannot and in most cases will not see through the BS the media feeds them and they can't really stomach the idea that they have been snowed for so long by the people that are supposed to be working for the common weal. It is apparent now that a faction of those in power have compromised. The world's politics are reduced to sweetheart deals. It couldn't be more clear now that the truth is not something the American people are ready to swallow. How can you cause someone to open their eyes to this? I'd love some good tactics to induce critical reasoning in my fellow zombies.

Here's an article explaining some of the legal issues around his extradition
It seems his extradition to Sweden (if it happens) will help his cause. At the moment it's really easy for the US to extradite from the UK, but Sweden doesn't have a similarly close agreement. It leaves me wondering if the rape charges were part of a cleaver political game Assanges set up himself to protect himself from the US government.
5 thornae 2010-12-08
According to The Independent, there have been informal discussions between US & Swedish officials about handing Assange over to the US.
3 illiterati 2010-12-08
Sweden has been involved in rendition by the US Government.
many sources
5 norney 2010-12-08
I wouldn't be so sure about that.
No doubt JA's legal team are exploring all this.
3 NorthernerWuwu 2010-12-08
Should this prove to be true, I'll be quite content.
I suspect at least though that the temporary confinement, based on allegations that would never have confined anyone else, will somehow turn into a deportation to the U.S. to face quiet charges.
Hell, these days perhaps a little enhanced interrogation might be in order. No geek pussy bitch would stand up to that right?

Too soon, OP. Let's see how this plays out. He's not charged with anything, so he should no be held for long. Of course, if the Swedes deliver him to US Authorities, yes, he's a political prisoner.
I think he will be released soon.
13 StoneMe 2010-12-08
and yet he is being held against his will - and denied bail!
1 illiterati 2010-12-08
3 StoneMe 2010-12-08
Why do you think this? -
What have you read and where - please point me at it.
2 illiterati 2010-12-08
I had read this in several articles here in Australia.
Here's a website clearly stating it; Link
Bail

2 headphonehalo 2010-12-08
Maybe you should find a better forum to air your opinions if you can't follow the rules of a particular forum.
1 [deleted] 2010-12-08
Are you referring to reddiquette, because up above all the little clauses is the one that says it is not a hard and fast set of rules that you seem to have neglected to read.
1 headphonehalo 2010-12-08
The guidelines are about what the community wants. I presume that you do agree that most reddit users dislike people pleading for upvotes in their thread titles. That's all that matters.
-5 02116663ag 2010-12-08
maybe you should chill out and air your opinion not tell me off for a particular rule being broken - as i have said previously i apologise for breaking the intergalactic law.
Assange is a political prisoner and no amount of side stepping on rule breaking will convince me to change the message
1 headphonehalo 2010-12-08
I can do both. I did neither, however. I merely explained the logic to you.
Side stepping on rule breaking? Do you have some kind of persecution complex? Don't you realise that a topic can be explained to you without the intent to obfuscate another? It's not like you can change the message once you've posted it, anyway. I was simply saying that you shouldn't go where you're not wanted. These rules don't exist in the woods, and I'm sure that they won't mind your message.
-4 02116663ag 2010-12-08
nope just stating an opinion end of
enjoy the rule book you seem to read before you go to bed
1 headphonehalo 2010-12-08
Yeah, an unwanted opinion. Again, you're stating an opinion in a way that isn't wanted where you're doing it. So why not find a forum better suited for you? That's a serious question, by the way.
A community is held together by its rules, so yes, excuse me if I care about the reddit community. But that's not really why I bring it up. There's just something about such a lack of common courtesy, coupled with such a grand display of ADHD, to the point of not even reading the rules of whatever it is that you're using, that I just can't help but comment on. And that's my bad, I guess.
0 STARVE_THE_BEAST 2010-12-08

1 DarkLurker 2010-12-08
I'm inclined to disagree on one issue.
The effort to shut down Wikileaks intensified dramatically after JA announced the next release would be bank documents. It seems more likely the US is putting pressure on other governments at the bequest of major corporations rather than the other way around.

2 iigloo 2010-12-08
Yes, there is nothing wrong with the Swedish judiciary system, it just treats allegations of sex-crime rather seriously. If there is a conspiracy in this then I think it has to do with the women whom Assange allegedly wronged. However there are no real evidence except the claims from the two women - unfortunately this is almost always the case in rape-charges. I think Assange will be extradited to Sweden where he will be questioned. I do not think he will be convicted of anything.

1 JimmerUK 2010-12-08
He's on remand. He won't be in genpop.

Know your master, peons!
1 momzill 2010-12-08

1 USSAwesomesauce 2010-12-08
1 KennyEvil 2010-12-08

None of which was actually suprising but still he's achieved nothing more than fraying international relations (bad) and threatened global security (bad).

he doesn't deserve a medal the man who got this info deserves a fucking medal!!!
1 USSAwesomesauce 2010-12-08
Assange leaked names of informants the US military used in Iraq. If there haven't been deaths directly attributed to that yet, I'll be very, very surprised.
1 JimmerUK 2010-12-08
The US Government are continually whining about how Wikileaks is putting people in danger. You'd think that the moment anyone was injured or killed that could even remotely be attributed to Wikileaks the US Gov would be shouting it from rooftops.
Nothing. It hasn't happened.
1 joeintheyear2000 2010-12-08
Assange is just an obtainable head that the USG can cut off to show people not to fuck with the USofA. He didn't leak documents, someone else who can't be or at least hasn't been caught leaked them. Wikileaks is a journalism web site. It may not be what we traditionally think of when we think of journalism, but it's a news source. If the BBC or some other forign news station had discovered and published this information on their own, the US wouldn't call for their destruction. I believe that tje only reason the US is (alledgely) going after Assange is because he is someone they can take down easily. I guess thats the real American way.
-7 holohoax 2010-12-08
Sweden is the sperm swallowing whore of the United States, Assange is a fucking imbecil for saying that 9/11 truthers are crazy, the US is a fascist dictatorship that did and will do more damage than Hitler, and what else is new.
