Why do people call it Palestine when it was Judea for thousands of years until a Roman emperor named it Palestine?

I don't condone any murder at all no matter where it comes from yet I'm asking why so many people refer to the land as Palestine when a Roman emperor came up with that in the second century? Prior to that the land was called many names but for thousands of years it was called Judea or Judaea.

Why shouldn't we call it Palestine? Because Zionists don't like it?

No sorry, didn't mean to offend. I don't know about that and i'm sorry to ask dumb question. Please consider forgiving my ignorance my friend and please be well and good. Thank you.

It's Istanbul, not Constantinople.

LOL! You are being funny! Sorry for my dumb question my friend.

For the same reason we don't go to "New Amsterdam" when we want to see a broadway show.

Because we don't live hundreds of years ago. We live now.

Thank you and I'm sorry I'm dumb and ask dumb questions. What you just wrote seems to imply people should call it Israel since that's modern name. I'm just saying according to how my brain reads what you wrote. I don't know and I'm sorry for my ignorance and hope i did not offend. Thank you for your thoughts my friend.

Asking question is never dumb, not knowing something doesn't imply stupidity, it just mean you don't know, there's shitload of things i don't know but that doesn't mean i'm an idiot and neither are you.

It's not dumb. I just wanted to deliver the simplest answer possible due to the politicization of the area and the potential for miscommunication and argument.

Like, look below. They're already arguing about which side killed more people. Seriously, you could write a post about Hostess Cupcakes in this subreddit and the thread will devolve into racist or ADL name-calling.

WHY DON'T WE JUST GIVE AMERICA BACK TO THE NATIVE AMERICANS AND SHIT NEW YORK IS ALGONQUIN TERRITORY SO WHY DON'T WE CALL IT THAT? for thousands of years they lived there before the white man arrived, and then the white terrorists came and attacked

The atrocities of the past are the atrocities of the past. The Zionist state of Israel is a current and on going atrocity to the Palestinian people.

shut the fuck up anti-semite they are god's chosen people says so right here in this book they gave me they can do anything they want because they are jewish and Israel can do no wrong THEY JUST WANT THE RIGHT TO EXIST why do you hate them so much for being jewish?

today i don't believe in white people or black just people. i also think those you talk about called white have been lied to and fooled most for long time and that the sort of avarice, greed and lusts many did when they came to this country is exemplified in all races of man at some point depending on circumstance. what i mean to say is that the sort of disgusting evil done by men can be of any race just as there were some men called white that rejected the evil and lived with the native americans and suffered and fought with them.

Always those men who choose good over evil seem too few and those who choose greed and avarice outnumber the men who choose good. This is why i think it so important today to not believe the lie of racial or ethnic or religious division but see now in this day where technology that it's most important to know love, and all people are human beings, and come together no longer willing to drop bombs or war but know we are one and work for love.

Sorry, i am dumb, and dream, but am very sad today because of wars happening which i will not do.

Thank you very much for your reply my friend.

Not "thousands of years"! It was actually called Judea for only about 500 years and it was only half of what is today Occupied Palestine. The land of the Philistines and Samaria were other parts. It has been called Palestine since about 450BCE. that's 2450 years. Before it became Judea it was called Canaan (Retenu by the Egyptians). The earliest reference to the name Canaan was from the archive of Tell Mardikh c.2350 BCE.

I'm sorry for my ignorance my friend. Thank you for your reply. There seem to be some conflicting thoughts about dates and areas but probably just me not understanding. I'm sorry I'm not too bright actually and I'm sorry for asking dumb question. Two other replies brought up the obvious connection between the words, not sure how I managed to not see the obviousness of the connection. Sorry, my friend. Thank you again for your reply.

Well, you were certainly bright enough to ask about something you didn't know the answer to.

"Judea" for thousands of years? I thought the whole fucking world was only 6000 years old. Get your goddam fairytales straight.

LOL! I'm sorry for my ignorance, I'm dumb. Please though would you please be kind to consider not cussing frequently or easily because some youthful classmates are impressionable and it seems can lead to careless anger. Again, sorry for my ignorance and thank you my friend.

Originally, the land was part of three areas called Philista, Canaan, Moab, and Amor. Later the Israelites moved into the land; it then became Israel, Philistia, Moab, and Phoenicia, and Judah (which became a separate kingdom from Israel later). Then the Roman Empire conquered the lands, and the area became provinces of Rome known as Idumea, Judea, Perea, Decapolis, Samaria, Galilee, Trachonitis, Iturea, and Phoenicia (all together known as Palestine). Then later the Roman Empire fell, and the area became part of the Ottoman Empire, and was still known as Palestine until about 1914. Later, when the Ottoman Empire fell to the Allies, it was split from the other lands of the Ottoman Empire, and was still known as Palestine (1914-1922) this was done by the Balfour Declaration. Later, violating the Balfour Declaration, the land was split into two areas one called Palestine, and one called Transjordan, and again the Balfour Declaration was violated when the British Mandate gave the Golan Heights to the French Mandate;

why do people call the garden of eden "iowa"?

LOL! Now that is a strange thought!!! I think the whole planet could be garden if we were all full of such joy and bliss that we cry happy. Thank you for good joke my friend!

You know I'm very skeptical about any controversial subjects in Wikipedia but that was a very interesting read and I don't know how I did not yet see the obvious connection between the word Palestine and Philistine.

Thank you for taking the time to post that link!

I'm sorry to pose dumb question, thank you again very much.

not sure if i have ever read such good comments and terrible comments on one subject before crazy

I think you make a joke or are serious I don't know, but i think you are a nice person and i want to say thank you for making me smile today. Please be well and good my friend.

for the same reason we call the United States America! He who is winning the war gets to name it.

You make joke my friend, you are funny but serious too. I think of the saying, what if they gave a war and nobody showed up?
